Grocery platform Misfits Market acquires The Rounds to further its mission of reducing food waste

Misfits Market, the online platform that delivers imperfect groceries to help minimize waste, announced the acquisition of household restocking service The Rounds on Friday. As a result of the deal, Misfits Market plans to take on over 250 items from The Rounds' inventory. This allows the company to diversify into additional categories, such as household items, including cleaning supplies and paper products. In a bid to transition The Rounds customers to Misfits Market, the company is offering a $30 credit, along with a complimentary one-year subscription to its new Misfits+ membership, which includes exclusive weekly deals and free shipping. The company declined to disclose the terms of the deal. It also couldn't confirm whether layoffs would be part of the acquisition, as decisions are still being finalized. The Rounds has raised a total of $66 million from investors such as Andrew Chen (Andreessen Horowitz), Annie Kadavy (Redpoint Ventures), Construct Capital, and First Round Capital. Along with diversifying its offerings, the deal will allow Misfits Market to collaborate with former partners from The Rounds, including major multifamily operators such as AvalonBay, Greystar, and Related. Misfits Market also aims to gain a stronger foothold in the industry as a result of the deal. Notably, the company will continue to pursue M&A as part of a broader growth strategy, especially at a time when consumer awareness of food waste and sustainability is on the rise. 'This market is ripe for consolidation, and we are constantly looking at deals,' Misfits Market CEO Abhi Ramesh told TechCrunch. Berkeley, CA | REGISTER NOW This marks Misfits Market's second acquisition, following its purchase of Imperfect Foods in 2022, another competitor in the market. Misfits Market, founded in 2018, offers produce that has been rejected by farmers and suppliers for being considered too 'ugly' to sell in grocery stores, often due to being too small, oddly shaped, or having discoloration. The Rounds, meanwhile, has offered its sustainable grocery delivery service since 2019 that refills home essentials using reusable packaging. To date, Misfits Market has rescued more than 238 million pounds of food, according to the company. The Rounds has saved over 1 million pounds of packaging waste and estimates to save an average of 500,000 pounds of food each week.

Keep your oranges 'fresher and juicier' for longer by storing them in this one place

Making these few small changes will mean you get the best out of your oranges. The majority of UK households store oranges in their fruit bowls. As pretty as this may look, experts believe having your oranges exposed to the air and next to other fruit, could actually be doing more harm than good. Oranges are a common staple in British homes and diets due to their health benefits. They are rich in vitamin C which supports a strong immune system and acts as an antioxidant. They also provide fiber, folate, and potassium, contributing to healthy digestion, heart health, and overall well-being. ‌ The freshness and juiciness of an orange can reduce rapidly if they are not stored properly. They can be kept at room temperature, out of direct sunlight for a few days, but they 'prefer a cool, dark environment'. ‌ If you want to get the best out of your oranges, then you should keep them in the fridge, according to Serious Eats. This can extend their shelf life and keep them juicier and fresher for longer. Riley Davies, a manager at Misfits Market – an online grocer – said that the ideal temperature for citrus fruit is between 40F and 45F (around 4.4C to 7.2C). This is likely colder than the countertop in your kitchen and warmer than the fridge, but the latter is the preferred option. The cool temperature in the fridge slows down the ripening process and inhibits the growth of mould and bacteria. ‌ It's best to place them in a mesh bag or keep them loose, allowing for good air circulation. Many people choose to store oranges at room temperature which can make them taste juicer because the natural sugars are more flavourful when not chilled. There's also a widespread belief that citrus fruits don't need to be kept in the fridge but while keeping oranges on the counter is fine for short-term storage of up to about a week, it's not ideal for long-term freshness. ‌ Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Warm environments can cause the fruit to dry out or spoil more quickly, especially in humid conditions. If you buy oranges in bulk or don't plan to eat them all within a few days, keeping them in the fridge is the smart choice. ‌ You could store most of your oranges in the fridge and leave a few out to enjoy over the next couple of days if you don't want to keep them all in there. By changing this one simple storage habit, you could extend the shelf-life and freshness of your oranges without any extra hassle. As much as an orange's juiciness has to do with storage, its quality also hinges on its condition at the time of purchase. For this reason, it's important to first select the right oranges. The freshest kind are usually a bright colour, have thinner skin, and a more solid feel. Cassie Howard, based at Sunkist – a citrus growers cooperative – told Martha Stewart: 'Choose a firm, heavy orange when buying as they tend to be juicier.'

Why is the consumer boycott happening? The economic blackout has been organized because of various claims against big box retailers linked to "corporate greed." The activists behind the February boycott are encouraging consumers to avoid shopping from the companies that have rolled back their diversity, equity and inclusion efforts and President Donald Trump's efforts to eliminate federal DEI programs since taking office. Along with unfair labor practices and environmental impact, big box retailers can harm small, locally-run businesses. A number of different groups of activists have been especially vocal on social media to help give consumers alternative shopping recommendations during the boycott to support local companies. Following the freezes on DEI initiatives, reduced funding for the National Institutes of Health and actions on immigration, Latino Americans have turned to social media to suggesting buying only the essentials and to focus on supporting "Latino American, Black American and Allied American Businesses that are supportive to this movement." Who is organizing the consumer boycott? The Friday, February 28 economic boycott is organized by John Schwarz, who goes by TheOneCalledJai on Instagram. He founded The People's Union, a grassroots movement dedicated to economic resistance, government accountability and corporate reform. The boycott is in protest of corporate greed and the rollback of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives by big box retailers. Participants are being urged to abstain from all non-essential purchases for 24 hours. Prices were accurate at the time this article was published but may change over time.
