Black Caps stay unbeaten in T20 Tri-Series with win over Zimbabwe

Photo: MICHAEL BRADLEY The Black Caps have remained unbeaten in cricket's T20 Tri-Series, being played in Harare, Zimbabwe. They've beaten the hosts by eight wickets to secure their second straight win and move to the top of the table, ahead of the Zimbabweans and South Africa. After winning the toss and sending Zimbabwe into bat, the Black Caps initially found getting breakthroughs tough, with openers Wessly Madhevere and Brian Bennett scoring 36 in the first five overs. But after fast bowler Matt Henry claimed Bennett's wicket with the second ball of the sixth over, New Zealand started to get on top. Henry, in particular, ended up shining, taking two more wickets, as he finished the best of the bowlers with three for 26 off his four overs. Adam Milne, captain Mitchell Santner, Michael Bracewell and Rachin Ravindra claimed a wicket each, as they restricted Zimbabwe to just 120 for seven off their 20 overs. And while New Zealand lost opener Tim Seifert early in their chase for just three, a solid partnership between Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra ensued to set up the victory. Conway ended up scoring an unbeaten 59 off 40 balls, while Ravindra's 30 came from just 19 balls. Daryl Mitchell helped seal the win with an unbeaten 26, as New Zealand finished 122 for two, easily chasing down the target with 39 balls to spare, with Conway named player of the match. "It was nice again to contribute today to the win," Conway said. "It's always nice to be one of those guys who stands out and puts their hands up and perform for the boys," he said. Meanwhile, all-rounder Glenn Phillips has been withdrawn from the rest of the series and the upcoming two-test series against Zimbabwe, due to a groin injury. New Zealand Cricket said Phillips suffered the injury during the Major League Cricket final in Dallas and needs "a number of weeks" to recover. The Black Caps are already without batter Finn Allen, who was ruled out of the Tri-Series with a foot injury suffered in the MLC. "It's obviously disappointing to lose someone of Glenn's calibre," head coach Rob Walter said. "Much like Finn, we really feel for Glenn and that he misses out on this series. "We know he was eager to get out on the field for the Blackcaps, and unfortunately, he won't be able to do that for this series. "We know he'll work hard to get himself back onto the park, and I look forward to when that happens." Phillips' replacement in the test squad will be named later, the NZC added. Conway rides his luck to lead New Zealand to comfy T20 win over Zimbabwe
HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) — If Devon Conway was a cat, he used eight of nine lives to lead New Zealand over Zimbabwe by eight wickets in Twenty20 cricket on Friday. Conway was dropped on 1, should have been run out on 34, survived a strong lbw appeal and miscued shots all over Harare Sports Club that happened to land safely. He ended up hitting the winnings runs, pulling Trevor Gwandu to the midwicket boundary for New Zealand to win with 6.1 overs to spare. Zimbabwe was made to bat first and scored only 120-7, and New Zealand replied with 122-2, Conway top-scoring with an unbeaten 59 off 40 balls, his first T20 half-century in 17 months. 'Got a bit lucky early and fortunate I got through that period,' Conway said. 'It was nice to spend some time in the middle.' New Zealand has two wins from two games in the T20 tri-series with South Africa. Zimbabwe opening batters Wessly Madhevere and Brian Bennett greeted the New Zealanders aggressively. But the run rate was falling from eight an over even before Bennett, 20 off 19, gave Henry his first wicket at the end of the powerplay. New Zealand could count on three spinners to Zimbabwe's one, and Mitchell Santner and Rachin Ravindra put the brakes on the home side. The only other decent scorer was Madhevere, who backed away to hit Adam Milne to the off side and lost his off stump after 36 off 32 balls. Henry took 3-26 and Santner and Ravindra a wicket each. When New Zealand batted, Blessing Muzarabani dropped Conway in the first over but made up for it by dismissing Tim Seifert in the second. As Conway rode his luck, Ravindra was on the charge with three consecutive boundaries off Gwandu and a six over deep backward point. His 30 off 19 lifted New Zealand more than halfway to the target. Conway didn't look comfortable until he was in the high 30s, but he and Daryl Mitchell, 26 off 19, steered New Zealand home by a wide margin. Zimbabwe plays South Africa next on Sunday. ___ AP cricket:

Today's encounter features Zimbabwe taking on New Zealand at the Harare Sports Club. The two sides have had contrasting starts to their campaigns as New Zealand began with a confident win, while Zimbabwe endured a heavy defeat at the hands of South Africa. ! …MATCHDAY… ! In a power-packed cricketing roster on Zimbabwean soil, this exciting tri-series continues as the home side Zimbabwe, takes on the soaring New Zealand in Match 3. The famous Harare Sports Club remains the exclusive venue for it. Zimbabwe have a lot to ponder upon as their home season hasn't been that promising so far and with them languishing at the bottom, with recent performances leaving much to be desired. The sting of their Test series defeat to South Africa still lingers, and their opening tri-series loss to the Proteas has only amplified the pressure on Sikandar Raza and his men. The Chevrons are searching for answers, particularly with the willow in hand. The batting woes have become increasingly apparent, with the team struggling to build those crucial partnerships at the top that form the backbone of competitive totals. Brian Bennett has displayed promising signs as an opener, and the veteran combination of Sikandar Raza and Ryan Burl has shouldered the responsibility in the middle phases, yet the rest of the lineup continues to crumble under pressure. The talent pool runs deep within this squad, but channeling that ability into consistent, impactful performances has become their most pressing challenge. Their bowling unit tells a different story entirely, with several players making encouraging strides. Richard Ngarava and Trevor Gwandu have stepped up admirably with their pace and control, particularly Ngarava whose three-wicket burst against South Africa highlighted his growing confidence and skill. Blessing Muzarabani remains the cornerstone of their attack, bringing vital experience and tactical nous to complement the emerging talents around him. The real issue surfaces in their bowling depth, where the second line of attack and the spin attack have blown hot and cold. That's the key areas where improvement is urgent. New Zealand's focus centers on consolidation from their promising opening performance in the tournament. The Proteas bowling attack certainly tested their resolve and exposed some vulnerabilities, but key individuals rose to the challenge when it mattered most. Tim Robinson and Bevon Jacobs delivered crucial rescue acts, steering their team through treacherous waters and ensuring they reached safe harbor with their composed batting displays. However, all isn't smooth sailing for the Black Caps, as several seasoned campaigners failed to make their mark in that opening clash. This presents a golden opportunity for those to redeem themselves and get some runs. The depth of talent within their squad means they can afford the occasional off day, but consistency from their established stars will be crucial if they want to maintain their early advantage in this tri-series. The bowling department showcases an impressive blend of youth and experience, with Matt Henry and Jacob Duffy both claiming three wickets each in their previous outing. Duffy has been enjoying a stellar run, consistently finding himself among the wickets and establishing himself as a genuine threat. The team management will be hoping this partnership between the veteran Henry and the in-form Duffy continues to flourish. This marks New Zealand's first return to Harare since 2015, setting the stage for a fascinating reunion. The Kiwis are hungry to continue their winning streak, but Zimbabwe is equally determined to flip the script on home turf. For New Zealand, another victory would cement their early dominance in the tournament. For Zimbabwe, this represents their golden chance to breathe life back into their campaign and give their supporters something to cheer about. Come what may, this is shaping up to be an exciting fixture.
