Rachel House Interview — Voices Of The Pacific

BuzzFeed: You voiced Gramma Tala in both Moana movies. What was it like returning to your character for the sequel? Moana 2 has been widely praised for its absolutely stunning animation. What can you share about that process? Gramma Tala showing up right when Moana needs her most is such an emotional moment at the end. What message do you hope people take away from that powerful scene? How do you balance staying true to your heritage while participating in an industry often dominated by non-Pacific Islander narratives? And is there a moment where you felt especially empowered and proud of your Māori identity? You've worked with Taika Waititi on many projects, from Hunt for the Wilderpeople to Next Goal Wins to Thor: Ragnarok. What's something that would surprise people to learn about him? If you could work with any Pacific Islander, who would it be and why? I spoke with Simone for this interview series — she's hoping to do a project with you, too! It sounded like it's not for sure yet, but is that something that you think is gonna happen? Last year, you made your feature film directorial debut with The Mountain. What did you take away from that experience? Is directing movies something you want to continue exploring? For Pacific Islanders, there are so many aspects of our cultures that we hold close to our hearts, from our foods to our dances to our tattoos. What's your favorite part of your culture? Do you have a favorite Māori food? What advice do you have for young Pacific Islander creatives? Finally, what does being Pacific Islander mean to you? Thanks for chatting with us, Rachel! Be sure to keep up with Rachel here.

Oakbrook Center Movies on the Lawn series returns June 18

Oakbrook Center's popular Movies on the Lawn series of free family films shown at 7 p.m. Wednesday evenings returns June 18 and runs through Aug. 27 in the village green area, near Crate & Barrel. Showing of the movies began in 2014 and will have one significant change this summer to the digital screen that is 18 feet wide and 32 feet tall. 'We are installing a new digital screen this year that will improve video and sound quality of the movies,' said Serge Khalimsky, senior general manager of Oakbrook Center. Khalimsky said Oakbrook Center has continued the movie series as a way to offer a free, safe, family fun entertainment option to the local community. 'The lawn at Oakbrook is a town square, and we want to provide a place for the community to come together,' he said. 'The Movies on the Lawn series has become a summer staple for local families looking to enjoy a nice night out in the summer.' Khalimsky said attracting people to the Wednesday night movies is a good way to bring additional business to the mall's stores and restaurants. 'We want those who attend to have the whole Oakbrook experience, whether they want to come early and do a bit of shopping, or eat at one of the restaurants, or grab a bite to enjoy during the movie from our food hall,' he said, adding that The Table at Crate will be setting up to sell refreshments that can be purchased at the lawn. Khalimsky said mall management has received great feedback from its tenants about how good business is during movie nights. 'The events bring in guests who often grab dinner at the restaurants beforehand or pick up takeout to enjoy on the lawn during the movie,' he said. 'It's also a nice setup for families or couples, with some members heading off to shop, while others settle in for the movie. It's a great way to spend the evening.' Khalimsky said Oakbrook Center staff does its best to curate a list of classic fan favorite movies or recent blockbuster hits. 'Last year, we showed 'Barbie,' and this summer we'll show 'Wicked,'' he said. 'Additionally, if we are working with a local partner on a themed night, we'll choose a movie that pairs well with the evening, such as, July 9th is 'Dog Man,' and we'll have Hinsdale Animal Society on-site.' Seating for movies is on a first-come first-serve basis, with blankets and chairs welcome. Outside alcoholic beverages are not permitted. Movies on the Lawn are subject to the weather and will not be rescheduled. The 2025 movie schedule: June 18 – 'Moana 2' (animated -PG) June 25 – 'IF' (Live-PG) July 2 – 'The Marvels' (Live-PG13) July 9 – Hinsdale Humane Society Night – 'Dog Man' (animated-PG) July 16 – People's Resource Center BTS Night – double feature: 'Inside Out,' 4-6 p.m. (animated-PG) and 'Inside Out 2,' 7-9 p.m. (animated – PG). Every movie you can watch for free in Minneapolis parks this summer

Few things feel as emblematic of summer in Minneapolis as watching movies in the park. The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) has unveiled the full lineup of films parkgoers can drop into throughout the summer. Each of the more than 60 movies will play at dusk and will be free for everyone. This summer's lineup is heavy on recent family-friendly films, with a couple of 2025 releases — Captain America: Brave New World and A Minecraft Movie — as well as a whole lot of 2024 movies like Wicked, Wild Robot, Kung Fu Panda 4, Inside Out 2, Moana 2, and Paddington in Peru. Where last summer had a couple of nights tucked away for older audiences, like Past Lives or, arguably, the latest Godzilla x Kong installment. This summer has a little less of that. The more adult-geared fare, which is still largely family-friendly-ish, includes Barbie, Mamma Mia!, Grease, Footloose, The Fall Guy, and The Fifth Element. Also, for the second straight year, Cool Runnings is getting some love. It's bobsled time. Here's the lineup for the MPRB's Movies in the Park series in 2025: June 4: Footloose (2011) at The Commons June 5: Mufasa: The Lion King (2024) at Brackett Field Park June 6: The Garfield Movie (2024) at Webber Park June 7: Forrest Gump (1994) at Lake Harriet Bandshell June 10: Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024) at Bottineau Park June 11: Twilight (2008) at The Commons June 12: Wonka (2023) at Victory Memorial Drive June 16: Cool Runnings (1993) at Sumner Field Park June 17: IF (2024) at St. Anthony Park June 18: Black Panther (2018) at The Commons June 20: Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024) at Bohanon Park June 21: Barbie (2023) at Lake Harriet Bandshell June 23: Monsters, Inc.
