Meta hires two Apple AI researchers for Superintelligence push

Meta Platforms has hired Apple artificial intelligence researchers Mark Lee and Tom Gunter for its Superintelligence Labs team, Bloomberg News reported on Thursday, as it intensifies its pursuit for top AI talent. The social media giant is among several technology companies that have struck high-profile deals and doled out multi-million-dollar pay packages to fast-track development of machines that could surpass humans intelligence. Lee recently left Apple and has started at Meta, while Gunter is set to join soon, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter. Their exit follows Ruoming Pang , who previously left Apple for a multi-million-dollar compensation package at Meta, according to a media report earlier this month. Lee and Gunter both worked closely with Pang, the Bloomberg report said on Thursday. Pang was the head of Apple's Foundation Models team and responsible for advanced AI features, sources have told Reuters. A Meta spokesperson declined to comment on the report, while Apple did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said on Monday that his social media platform would spend hundreds of billions of dollars to build several massive AI data centers . Tech talent war heats up: Meta poaches Apple AI researchers after OpenAI

Meta, the Mark Zuckerberg-led company that owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, recently created a new division called Superintelligence Labs, which will focus on developing artificial general intelligence and work on next-gen large language models. Led by former Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang and ex-GitHub CEO Nat Friedman, in the last few days, Meta has been poaching AI experts left and right by offering them multi-million-dollar pay packages. Now, a Bloomberg report suggests that Meta has hired Mark Lee and Tom Gunter, two AI researchers who previously worked at Apple. While Lee has already started working, citing sources familiar with the matter, the report says Gunter will soon be joining Meta. As it turns out, both Lee and Gunter were close to Rouming Pang, the renowned AI researcher who previously led Apple's Foundational Models team and recently joined Meta after the company offered him a multiyear compensation package worth well over $200 million. When Pang worked for Apple, Lee was his first hire. On the other hand, Gunter had made a name for himself at Cupertino and was regarded as one of the most senior employees. Meta's Superintelligence Labs was reportedly created to bring together the company's foundational AI model teams, product teams and the Fundamental AI research (FAIR) division. A few days ago, Wired reported that OpenAI researchers Jason Wei and Hyung Won Chung may soon be joining Meta. Wei worked on o3 and deep research models, while Hyung worked on the o1 model and focused on reasoning and agents. These poachings are part of Mark Zuckerberg's plan to expand its Superintelligence Labs division with talent from around the world. In a post on Threads, the Meta CEO said that his company would 'invest hundreds of billions of dollars into compute to build superintelligence', which refers to a form of advanced technology that can do tasks better than humans. In the coming days, tech giants and multi-billion-dollar AI startups like Google, OpenAI and Meta might double down on hiring researchers working on AI by offering them even more lucrative packages.

Marc Jacobs' Couture-Worthy Collection Bolsters Contemporary Offerings

(Photo byfor Marc Jacobs ) For his latest designer collection—which for all intents and purposes could be called Haute Couture as surely it involves had crafting—Marc Jacobs leaned into the less is more idea, stressing quality over quantity to perfection, For this runway outing entitled "Beauty", the designer showed exactly 19 looks at New York's Public Library Monday night. In show notes, the Jacobs defined beauty as "a quality or combination of qualities that gives pleasure to the mind or senses, and it is often associated with properties such as harmony of form or color, proportion, and authenticity." Adding to the definition could be "something that is a sight to behold." Indeed, this latest collection is precisely that. It also demonstrates the vocabulary Jacobs is developing in his latest design era that features outsize silhouettes, extreme structure, and doll and cartoon-esque elements imagined as high fashion. It also fuels the bevy of highly successful merch, especially in handbags, that falls into the attainable category, which is driving the Marc Jacobs business model. (Photo byfor Marc Jacobs ) Set to Nick Cave and Warren Ellis's "Song for Jesse," which itself had a childlike, mystical mood to it, models walked slowly down the library corridor in shoes that could double as stilts—the required slow pace for the footwear allowed for careful viewing of the clothes. Jacobs is furthering certain design elements, such as projected square hip seams or bustled skirts and balloon-like shapes, and explores them in different ways. Notably, Jacobs recalled the bow, a familiar design motif. They were enlarged and placed on the bums of skirts and dresses, adding in some cases the idea of the modern bustle, such as in the yellow lace dress, which felt very 'Gilded Age 2.0'—or as headdresses. Floral and lace prints, often in transparent fabrics, revealed boning and hoop skirt structures, and mutton sleeves added to the feminine innocence that prevailed. A modern vixen idea emerged in the pencil skirts with exaggerated padded flounces. Oversized pants anchored some opening looks, either cargo-influenced or a transformed white jean style that was paired with a layered bra-corset-camisole combo and dripping in chains and beaded necklaces that draped around the back and arms as well. A padded cream sweater ensemble, constructed from multiple stuffed sweaters, also pushed an idea into new design territory. It feels like the tone that sets the bevy of merchandise available for sale on the brand's website, even though Jacobs doesn't turn his collection debut into a media circus driven more by marketing than design. The tight edit of 19 leaves you wanting more; perhaps that is by design. While many may dream of owning one of these runway styles, or even the pared-back designer merchandise exclusively at Bergdorf Goodman, the attainable luxury goods with the contemporary price points ensure most can still get a Marc Jacobs fix. To wit, many attendees were brandishing the new Cristina Satchel bag style that retails for an easy $350.

Sharpie, Rubbermaid marketer partners with Adobe around generative AI

This story was originally published on Marketing Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Marketing Dive newsletter. Newell Brands and Adobe are partnering to activate generative artificial intelligence (AI) with Adobe Firefly and Adobe Express, Marketing Dive can exclusively share. The consumer goods marketer is also expanding its use of Adobe's content supply chain solutions to optimize planning, content creation, activation and measurement. The partnership comes as Newell looks to continue a business transformation strategy under new CMO Nick Hammitt. Previous CMO Melanie Huet was recently promoted to co-CEO of the company's home and commercial segment. Newell Brands, a consumer good company that notched $1.6 billion in net sales in Q1 2025, is investing in marketing across channels, including social media and e-commerce, with the goal of creating five times more content while improving efficiency and effectiveness. As part of this strategy, the company has a new partnership with Adobe around its generative AI services. The partnership with Adobe is multifold. Newell's content supply chain is now powered by Adobe's generative AI solutions, including its suite of Adobe Firefly Services, that enable content creation at scale through streamlining tasks like resizing and swapping backgrounds. Newell will also use Adobe Firefly Custom Models that are trained on the marketer's proprietary assets and ensure that content creation is on-brand. Using the models for its Paper Mate brand accelerated content production by 75% and shortened time-to-market — efficiencies the marketer hopes to replicate across its portfolio. Newell has also seen early success with Adobe Express, which allows it to define templates and brand guidelines for marketing teams. Its team in Latin America used Express on the production process for Oster social content to cut the time it takes to create 52 assets by 33%, from 12 hours down to eight hours. News of the partnership comes days after Newell shuffled its executive ranks, promoting its CMO to a co-CEO role and its vice president of marketing to CMO. New CMO Hammitt will be responsible for developing and executing marketing strategies to drive brand growth, increase market share and enhance consumer engagement and conversion. The executive previously held senior roles at The Campbell's Company, PepsiCo and Unilever. 'As CMO, I look forward to working with our brand teams to deliver bold, insight-driven marketing and commercial innovation that deepens consumer engagement, drives conversion, and fuels long-term brand equity,' Hammitt said in a press release. Newell joins a list of other marketers betting on generative AI to boost content marketing, including others who are leveraging Adobe's AI services this year. Brands under the Newell umbrella include Coleman, Oster, Yankee Candle, Rubbermaid and more. In Q1 2025, Newell Brands saw net sales decline 5.3% year-over-year to $1.6 billion, with core sales declining only 2.1%. However, President and CEO Chris Peterson noted that the results were in-line or better than the company's expectations, later saying that the executive moves were part of its strategy to connect with consumers and accelerate performance of its portfolio.
