41 held in ops against migrant smuggling

KOTA BARU: The Kelantan Immigration Department has busted a migrant smuggling syndicate following the arrest of 41 individuals, including seven children, during an integrated operation in Kampung Kubang Sepat, Pasir Mas. Its director Mohamed Yusoff Khan Mohd Hassan said the operation, which began at 5.30am, was carried out by the Immigration Border Intelligence Unit in collaboration with the Special Tactical Team from the Intelligence and Special Operations Division of Immigration headquarters in Putrajaya. 'The raid was the result of a two-week intelligence operation conducted by the team, which led to the arrest of 41 individuals, comprising 35 illegal immigrants from Myanmar, including two boys and five girls. 'The arrested immigrants were aged between three and 53 years old, while six local men, suspected of acting as transporters and caretakers of transit houses, were also detained,' he said. Mohamed Yusoff Khan said authorities also seized five vehicles, namely a four-wheel drive, a sports utility vehicle, a sedan and two motorcycles, believed to have been used in smuggling activities. The total estimated value of the vehicles is RM300,000, Bernama reported. 'Cash amounting to RM820 and 10,000 Thai baht was also seized,' he said.

Immigration cripples human smuggling syndicate in Kelantan, six men arrested

PASIR MAS: The Immigration Department has dismantled a human smuggling syndicate with the arrest of six local men suspected of transporting 35 undocumented migrants in an operation conducted here early today. Kelantan Immigration director Mohamed Yusoff Khan Mohd Hassan said the group of migrants comprised 18 men, 10 women, and seven children, all from Myanmar. He said the joint operation, which began at 5.30am, was led by the department's Border Intelligence Unit in collaboration with the Special Tactical Team from the Intelligence and Special Operations Division at the Immigration headquarters in Putrajaya. The raid at Kampung Kubang Sepat followed two weeks of intelligence gathering. "The 35 foreigners, aged between three and 53, are believed to have entered the country illegally. "The six local men, suspected of acting as transporters and caretakers of a transit house, were also arrested during the operation," he said in a statement. Five vehicles - a four-wheel drive, an SUV, a sedan, and two motorcycles - believed to have been used to transport the migrants were seized. The vehicles are estimated to be worth RM300,000. "Officers also confiscated RM820 in cash and 10,000 Thai baht during the raid," he added. The migrants were detained under the Immigration Act 1959/63 and the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants (Atipsom) Act 2007. The six local men are being investigated under the same legislation for their alleged involvement in the smuggling network. Mohamed Yusoff said the successful operation demonstrated the department's ongoing commitment to combating human trafficking and safeguarding national security, particularly along border areas. He said enforcement and intelligence operations would be intensified to dismantle syndicates exploiting Malaysia's border routes. "The Kelantan Immigration Department urges the public to provide any information regarding illegal immigrants or foreigners involved in unlawful activities. "Stern action, without compromise, will be taken against anyone aiding, abetting, or harbouring undocumented migrants," he said.

Weather conditions help reduce open burning cases in Kelantan

KOTA BARU: The Kelantan Fire and Rescue Department expects the number of open burning-related calls to drop by more than 50 per cent this year compared with last year. Its director, Farhan Sufyan Borhan, said the department received 1,897 such calls in 2024. "In the first four months of this year, we have received a total of 189 calls. "This year, we expect fewer cases of open burning due to weather conditions. Although the weather is hot, rainfall has been fairly consistent and not prolonged. "Therefore, we believe the situation is less concerning, based on the significant decrease in the number of calls received so far," he said. He was speaking to reporters after attending the Kelantan Immigration Department's Hari Raya open house today. Also present was state Immigration director, Mohamed Yusoff Khan Mohd Hassan. Farhan added that last year, nearly 60 per cent of the calls involved rubbish fires. "This year, however, the trend has shifted to grass fires. "We have identified land-clearing activities as one of the contributing factors to this increase," he said. Citing 2021 statistics, he said there were 44 open burning hotspots recorded across the state, with the highest numbers reported in Bachok, Pasir Mas, Tanah Merah, and Pasir Puteh.
