Even if India blocked water to Pakistan, it would require significant infrastructure: Pak researcher

A Pakistani researcher during an interactive seminar on the Pakistan-India conflict on Sunday said that even if India blocked water under the Indus Waters Treaty, it would require significant infrastructure that would take years to build and also billions of dollars. In the wake of the horrific April 22 Pahalgam attack in Jammu and Kashmir in which 26 civilians were killed, India had decided that the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960 would be held in abeyance with immediate effect until Pakistan credibly and irrevocably abjures its support for cross-border terrorism. The seminar held by the Pakistan Institute of International Affairs (PIIA) saw research papers being read out on the Pakistan-India conflict. Researcher Mohammad Usman said that if India were to stop the water flow to Pakistan, it would risk flooding its own upper regions. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Bangladesh: Unsold Sofas at Bargain Prices (View Current Prices) Sofas | Search Ads Search Now Undo "But if they stopped our water during the dry seasons, it could be a concern for us because the flow of water is lower and storage matters the most. It can affect our farmers, which could result in lower yields," Usman said. The researcher said that even if India blocked water, it would require significant infrastructure that would take years to build and also billions of dollars. Live Events He said in the case of Pakistan and India, Pakistan is the lower riparian state and India the upper riparian state. But in the case of China and India, China is the upper riparian state and India the lower riparian state. "This is especially true in Brahmaputra where China can also block India's water," he pointed out. PIIA chairperson Dr Masuma Hasan underscored the need to hear different voices, especially the voices of the youth, regarding the recent conflict. Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated after the April 22 Pahalgam attack, which claimed 26 lives. India carried out precision strikes as part of Operation Sindoor on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in the early hours of May 7. It was followed by Pakistan's attempt to attack Indian military bases on May 8, 9, and 10. The Indian side responded strongly to the Pakistani actions. The on-ground hostilities ended with an understanding of stopping the military actions following talks between the directors general of military operations of both sides on May 10.

Remove all adverse remarks in transfer order of rape accused's son: Uttarakhand HC

The Uttarakhand high court on Thursday directed the state's Public Works Department (PWD) to remove the adverse remarks made in the transfer order of Rizwan Khan, who is additional assistant engineer in PWD Uttarakhand, and son of a rape accused. The bench of Justice Manoj Tiwari and Justice Ashish Naithani directed the PWD while hearing the petition filed by Rizwan. Kartikeya Hari Gupta, counsel of the petitioner, said Rizwan had challenged the stigmatic transfer order dated May 5 by which he was transferred from PWD Construction Division Khatima to temporary division PWD Ghansali on administrative grounds. We pleaded before the court that the transfer order issued on May 5 is in violation of Uttarakhand Transfer Act 2017. We pleaded before the Court that as a government servant, he has no problem with the transfer, but the transfer on administrative grounds, which mentions 'laxity of work' and 'non-compliance of orders of superiors' has been wrongly mentioned in the transfer order'. 'The court disposed of the petition and ordered PWD to expunge all the adverse remarks made against the petitioner in the transfer order', Gupta said. On April 30, a first information report (FIR) was registered, and the building contractor Mohammad Usman was arrested for allegedly raping the 12-year-old girl in his car on April 12. The FIR was registered under section 65 (1) (Punishment for rape in certain cases of rape on a woman under sixteen years), 351 (2) (criminal intimidation) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and relevant sections of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act at Mallital police station. In the complaint, the minor girl's mother alleged that the accused, who lives in their neighbourhood, raped the girl in his car by luring her with money on April 12. The minor girl lives with relatives in Nainital and her mother lives in Sambhal of Uttar Pradesh.

HC orders probe into online abuse of judges, lawyers in Nainital minor rape case

Dehradun: on Thursday directed Nainital police to investigate and report online abuse targeting its judges and lawyers in a rape case involving a minor girl. The court has asked SSP Nainital to submit a report by Monday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The rape case pertains to the alleged sexual assault of a 12-year-old girl by 73-year-old contractor Mohammad Usman in Nainital on April 12, an incident that led to largescale violence and arson in the hill station. Though the crime was allegedly committed on April 12, it came to light on April 30 when the girl informed her parents. Police arrested Usman soon after. During Thursday's hearing, a division bench of Chief Justice G Narendra and Justice Alok Mehra took strong exception to the online targeting of judicial officers and lawyers. "How can the name of the high court be misused in hate speeches, and why has the administration done nothing? What is the high court bar doing?" the court said, while hinting it may take judicial notice of the hate content. The bench was hearing a petition challenging the transfer of Rizwan Khan, an assistant engineer in the public works department, from Khatima to Ghansali. Rizwan is the son of Usman, the rape accused. His counsel Kartikey Hari Gupta said the transfer had been carried out without any prior notice or valid reason, in violation of the Uttarakhand Transfer Act 2017. He claimed that the May 5 transfer, which was officially justified on administrative grounds, appeared punitive as it followed the rape case. He also said the order was shared by right-wing leaders on social media before the petitioner received it. "We have pleaded before the Hon'ble court that the transfer order violates the Uttarakhand Transfer Act 2017. The law mandates that any transfer on administrative grounds must be preceded by a due inquiry, which was never conducted in this case," Gupta said. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Advocate general S N Babulkar and chief standing counsel Chandrashekhar Rawat defended the decision, saying it was made in accordance with established norms. The court did not grant immediate relief and scheduled the next hearing for Monday. Earlier, the Nainital Bar Association passed a resolution urging its members not to representUsman. The high court, however, questioned the move, noting that every accused has the right to legal representation. The Muslim community in Nainital later publicly expelled Usman and pledged to support the survivor's medical and educational needs.

Nainital rape accused ‘expelled' by own community

Nainital: In a move aimed at restoring communal harmony in Nainital after it was rocked by riots following the alleged rape of a 12-year-old girl by a 73-year-old man from the minority community, prominent Muslim leaders on Monday announced that the accused, Mohammad Usman, has been 'expelled' from the community. Usman, a Class D contractor with the public works department, was arrested last week after the girl disclosed the assault to her parents. Community members have now pledged to bear the survivor's medical and educational expenses, and demanded a thorough investigation into the case. Shoaib Ahmad, president of the Jamia Islamia Committee, said, "From today onwards, we have decided to completely boycott the accused. No one from our community will include him in any functions or social events. In Islam, we greet each other with 'As-salamu Alaikum,' which means 'May Allah have mercy on you and bless you,' but we have now decided that no one from our community will even offer him this greeting. For such a person, we cannot ask Allah to bless him. After this incident, our daughters are living in fear. Because of one individual, the peaceful environment of Nainital has turned into one of fear and tension and this is something we will not tolerate under any circumstances." He added, "We came to know that the girl's financial condition is not good so we decided to take full responsibility for her medical treatment and education. This is not a Hindu-Muslim issue, it is a matter of humanity. And as a matter of humanity, it is our duty to help her." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 3 Reasons to Plug This Into Your Home Today elecTrick - Save upto 80% on Power Bill Learn More Undo Jamal Siddiqui, secretary of the Anjuman Islamia Committee, told TOI, "We consider this a violent and serious matter that stands above Hindu-Muslim narratives. Our own daughters live here, step out for education and work, and if such acts continue, no society can tolerate them. Nainital has always been known for its peace and harmony and such situations have never occurred here before. Those trying to disrupt this environment must face the harshest possible consequences." Community leaders also called for immediate verification of outsiders living illegally in the area and extended full support for strict legal action against them.

'Their ventilated upper keeps my feet cool, and the cushy midsole makes it easy to walk for miles in pain-free comfort.' Here at Forbes Vetted, our fashion team has researched, written on and tested a wide variety of footwear, from the best workout shoes for men to the best casual shoes for men. When assembling this list, we researched bestselling men's sneakers from top-rated brands like On, Allbirds and Hoka. 'When traveling, we often double or even triple our normal step count, which can exacerbate underlying foot problems,' says Dr. Matthew Conti, foot and ankle surgeon at the Hospital for Special Surgery. Before making a purchase, here are some important factors to consider that can minimize injury risks: 'Appropriate arch support is essential for travel,' says Dr. Conti, who recommends avoiding flimsy footwear that lacks cushioning. The Kizik Vegas' almost spring-like cushioning, for example, offers a blend of comfort and support. 'Cushioning is essential to maintaining the foot in a neutral position, which results in proper alignment and reduces stress on muscle groups,' notes Dr. Mohammad Usman, foot and ankle specialist and surgeon at Michigan Avenue Podiatry. Choosing the right fabric for your shoe can be the difference between constant irritation and redness or a blister-free journey. This is especially true if you're prone to hammer toes: a.k.a., corns that develop on your toes due to over-straining muscle groups, says Dr. Usman. He suggests you go for materials that rub minimally against your feet. 'I highly recommend mesh fabrics,' he says, 'as these can regulate temperature and reduce moisture, which has an added benefit of preventing fungal infections.' Our mesh-filled favorite on our list, the On Cloud 5, fits the bill and is known for its breathability. Certain foot types may need special attention. According to Dr. Usman, those with flat feet should 'look for shoes with motion control features, rigid heel counters and firm arch support to prevent excessive inward rolling of the ankle.' The Hoka Anacapa Breeze Low, for instance, offers an array of heavy-duty features to enhance foot stability while on uneven terrain. Alternatively, for feet with high arches, shoes with ample cushioning should generally suffice, he says. If you have wide feet, you'll likely need something something flexible like the Suavs The Zilker. 'Those with bunions will also need a wider toe box to prevent the toes from chafing against the top of the shoe,' Dr. Conti adds.
