UAE: Scholarship students share why they chose to study abroad, inspire aspirants
The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research organized the New Scholarship Students Forum 2025 on Thursday at the Mohammed Bin Rashid Library (MBRL), Dubai. The event brought together students and parents in an interactive setting focused on academic guidance, national values, and the comprehensive support offered throughout the scholarship journey. The orientation featured interactive workshops covering key topics such as scholarship activation, communication with the Ministry and cultural attachés, student rights and responsibilities, cultural adjustment, personal safety, and academic and career planning. Dedicated sessions were held for parents to address their questions, reflecting the Ministry's commitment to involving families as key partners in supporting students' academic and emotional well-being abroad. The gathering featured discussions with former scholars who shared their experiences and highlighted the Ministry's role in supporting students abroad. Parents and students began exchanging contact details, building a network of mutual support to ease the transition for their children and themselves. Dr Mohammed Al Mualla, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, said, 'Each year, we receive nearly 3,000 scholarship applications, but only 10 per cent are selected based on their academic excellence and admission to top global universities.' The total number of Emirati scholarship students abroad, including both new and continuing students, has reached 592, enrolled in over 115 higher education institutions across at least 22 countries worldwide — all ranked among the top global universities. Meanwhile, 187 students graduated from the scholarship programme during the 2024–2025 academic year. He stressed the importance of maintaining balance between academic, professional, and personal growth during the scholarship period. Dr Al Mualla emphasized that the scholarship programme reflects the UAE's commitment to investing in its youth by providing access to world-class education, enabling students to acquire diverse skills and international exposure, fostering a strong sense of national responsibility, and preparing them to meet the evolving needs of the job market. He added, 'You must take pride in your Emirati identity, uphold your national values and religious ethics, and carry them with you in your interactions abroad.' The event also featured emotional and interactive moments, as students posed for commemorative photos with their families and wrote postcards with personal messages to loved ones — mementos to keep during their time abroad. Self-reliance and independence Speaking to Khaleej Times, Khadijah Ali, 20, who began her scholarship in 2023 and is currently entering her third year studying psychology at McMaster University in Canada, reflected on her initial feelings, 'When I first got accepted into the scholarship programme, I felt a mix of fear, anxiety, and joy. I was afraid of failing, but my family's support encouraged me to begin. Today, I am truly happy with my decision.' 'Studying abroad has been a completely different experience. I've met so many people and learned to be independent at a very young age,' she added. She explained that after spending her first year in student housing, she decided to find and furnish her own apartment. 'I was proud of myself and my independence at such a young age,' she said. In her second year, Khadeeja launched a small business selling traditional Emirati Mukhawar (a traditional dress). She advised new scholars, 'Try every experience available beyond academics. Enjoy your time — it's what will truly enrich your years of study.' Becoming self-reliant Abdullah Nabil Alnaqbi, an 18-year-old high school graduate, has decided to pursue a degree in actuarial science at the University of Melbourne in Australia. 'This is an opportunity for me to rely on myself and experience life independently,' he said. He explained that his choice was influenced by his cousin, who is currently studying in Australia and has praised both the quality of education and the ease of living there. 'Choosing to study abroad was easy for me — I was fully convinced,' he added. His mother, who studied at the UAE University away from her family, expressed her confidence in the experience, 'It's a wonderful opportunity for him to become more self-reliant and grow personally.' She credited her confidence in the decision to the school's numerous preparatory meetings and her trust in the UAE's commitment to ensuring its citizens' safety and well-being abroad. In the weeks leading up to the event, cultural attachés in host countries held virtual sessions to familiarize students and parents with digital services and support mechanisms, offering guidance to ensure a well-rounded and successful scholarship journey.

Emirati photographer Yousef Al Qasimi captures the beauty of space
Dubai: As part of the 'Space World' programme, the Mohammed Bin Rashid Library organized a specialized workshop titled 'Astronomy and Space Photography,' presented by professional Emirati photographer Yousef Al Qasimi. The workshop attracted a large audience of photography and space enthusiasts. During the session, Al Qasimi explained various types of astrophotography, highlighting the differences between wide-field imaging — such as capturing the Milky Way and star trails —and deep-sky photography, which includes shooting nebulae, distant galaxies, and planets. He also addressed critical factors that influence image quality, including light pollution, moon phases, weather stability, and more. Al Qasimi affirmed that the workshop was an inspiring opportunity for dialogue and learning, as attendees showed great enthusiasm for exploring the artistic and scientific aspects of astrophotography—an art that combines visual beauty with technical precision and strengthens the human connection with the universe. He added: "Astrophotography is an effective visual tool to promote scientific awareness. It helps embed space sciences into the cultural memory of younger generations through direct and engaging visual experiences. I also commend the vital role played by the Mohammed Bin Rashid Library in equipping the community with tools for knowledge and exploration, in line with the UAE's vision of building a knowledge-based economy driven by innovation and science." Yousef Al Qasimi addresses the gathering. Participants learned essential technical principles of astrophotography, including the ideal camera settings for capturing the Milky Way: shutter speeds between 10 to 30 seconds, focal lengths from 14 to 24mm, wide apertures (F2.8 – F3.5), and high ISO settings (1000–3200) to produce clear, detailed images in low-light environments. The workshop also covered necessary astrophotography equipment, such as wide-angle lenses and tripods for wide-field shots, and star trackers and telescopes for deep-sky imaging. Al Qasimi introduced free software like SEQUATOR, used for image stacking, detail enhancement, and noise reduction, to help produce high-quality photos of stars and galaxies. Additionally, the trainer showcased a variety of telescopes, cameras, and modern astronomical tools, explaining the features and uses of each for capturing planets, nebulae, and distant celestial objects. He clarified the differences between lenses and telescopes and offered guidance on selecting the most suitable gear based on location, environmental factors, and desired subject. The workshop emphasized astrophotography as a skill that blends art with science, fostering analytical thinking, precision, and attention to detail. It also opens up new, non-traditional career and creative paths for youth, inspiring them to engage with science and space through a compelling visual perspective. This workshop aligns with Mohammed Bin Rashid Library's vision of empowering future generations and equipping them with tools to explore new horizons — such as astrophotography — in line with UAE Vision 2071 to build a knowledge-based, forward-thinking society and promote scientific curiosity.

The GCC Menopause Summit Returns in October to Drive Continued Change - Middle East Business News and Information
A larger venue offers more opportunities for education and engagement, including multiple indoor and outdoor activations After its sell-out 2024 debut, the GCC Menopause Summit is back for its second edition on October 23 rd 2025, at the Mohammed Bin Rashid Library. This year's summit expands its reach with a larger venue featuring indoor and outdoor activations and workshops across key areas of women's health and wellbeing pre- and post-menopause; these include fitness, nutrition, careers, and more. Staying true to its mission, the event will empower individuals with knowledge, challenge taboos, and create meaningful change in the region and beyond. This year also marks the formal introduction of the GCC Menopause Hub , developed by the team behind the summit. The GCC Menopause Hub is a digital platform that champions women's health and wellbeing by providing trusted resources, building a supportive community, and advocating for a society that celebrates women at every stage of their lives. 'For too long, women have navigated this significant life stage in silence. Menopause is not just a personal journey; it's a workplace, healthcare, and societal conversation that demands action. After the success of our inaugural event, we are thrilled to bring the GCC Menopause Summit 2025 to an even bigger stage,' explains Sharon James, Co-Founder of the GCC Menopause Hub. Maureen Bannerman, Co-Founder of the GCC Menopause Hub, adds: 'Backed by the broader GCC Menopause Hub, we continue our mission to tackle stigma, share knowledge, and increase open conversation about the menopause. Every woman deserves to thrive through midlife and beyond. We also want to inspire the next generation. By encouraging younger women to understand their bodies and make informed choices today, we can help them prepare for a healthier, more supported menopause journey. Together, we are shaping a future where menopause is understood, supported, and embraced.' Visitors to the summit can expect a packed agenda featuring panel discussions, Q&A sessions, and networking opportunities. Business leaders, healthcare facilitators, and advocates will contribute the latest data and knowledge, equipping attendees with the resources they need to navigate perimenopause and menopause effectively. While menopause typically occurs around the age of 51, it can affect women as early as their 30s. Beyond the physical changes, the end of a woman's fertility cycle can also present significant psychological challenges. A recent survey in the Middle East revealed a concerning gap in physicians' knowledge regarding menopause diagnosis and management, underscoring the urgent need for more training and awareness within the medical community. Dr. Aagje Bais, MD, PhD, Consultant Gynaecology and Medical Advisor to the GCC Menopause Summit, said: ' The first GCC Menopause Summit marked a pivotal moment in opening up crucial conversations around women's midlife health in our region. It was encouraging to see such strong engagement from both healthcare professionals and the wider community, and I'm pleased to be involved again to build on that momentum. 'I often see women who feel unprepared for the physical, emotional, and mental changes that accompany perimenopause and menopause. Despite being a natural transition, this stage of life is still surrounded by misinformation, stigma, or silence. The summit provides an important platform to challenge that by offering clear, evidence-based information and fostering open, supportive dialogue.' Sponsors of the 2025 GCC Menopause Summit include King's College Hospital London – Dubai, BinSina Pharmacy, Holland & Barrett, CIPD Middle East, and Mywillbe. Community Partners include the British Chamber of Commerce Dubai, British Mums, Beyond Careers, and Soroptimist International Gulf Dubai. About The GCC Menopause Summit: The GCC Menopause Summit is an annual event held in the GCC region bringing together regional and international experts to discuss the natural biological process that affects 100 percent of women worldwide. The event aims to educate and inspire attendees from both the medical profession and the community alike, with the goal of raising awareness and breaking the taboo around menopause. As part of the wider GCC Menopause Hub initiative, the Summit also serves as a flagship moment in a year-round effort to build community, drive education, and push for policy change across women's health in the region.
