Find solution to avoid hobbling pace frontline
Cricketers suffering injuries is nothing new, especially fast bowlers. But over the past year-and-a-half, several pacers have spent time injured and in rehabilitation more than playing. Deep, who is doubtful for the Manchester Test, also missed the Sydney Test in January due to a back injury. An ageing Mohammed Shami is nowhere near full fitness; the other pace sensation Mayank Yadav has been in rehab for most of the last 18 months. This has left the team with little choice but to call Anshul Kamboj. As things are, it should not come as a surprise if he makes his Test debut on Wednesday ahead of the likes of Prasidh Krishna. One cannot help but wonder why so many pacers are getting injured. The cricket calendar is ever expanding and the top players are expected to play in all formats for the country. Even if India win at Manchester, they need to ponder whether to play Bumrah in the fifth and final Test. This brings the attention to the BCCI Centre of Excellence, where contracted players report after injury. Last year, the BCCI introduced an Athlete Monitoring System, which the centre uses to monitor the skills and fitness of every player who attends camps. These reports are available to the state associations to monitor the athletes' readiness against the workload. Yet, the injuries keep coming. Perhaps it's time for the BCCI to reassess their mechanism for monitoring— the earlier it's done, the better.

Veteran India pacer Mohammed Shami, who has been out of action since IPL 2025 and is not part of India's ongoing Test tour of England, was on Saturday named in Bengal's 50-member list of probables for the upcoming domestic season. The list, released by the Cricket Association of Bengal, also includes pacer Akash Deep and top-order batter Abhimanyu Easwaran, who are both currently touring England with the Indian team. It also includes right-arm seamer Mukesh Kumar and senior batter Anustup Majumdar, who is likely to lead Bengal again. Spin bowling all-rounder Shahbaz Ahmed, who is currently recovering from an injury sustained in the Bengal Pro League T20, and wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel are also among the probables who will attend a preseason camp, the date and venue of which is yet to be announced. Shami could also feature for East Zone in the season-opening Duleep Trophy, which returns to its traditional inter-zonal format this year and begins on August 28. The tournament may mark Shami's return to competitive cricket. The 33-year-old Shami, who has played 64 Tests, 108 ODIs and 25 T20Is, last turned out for India in their triumphant campaign in the Champions Trophy early this year after recovering from an ankle injury. He picked up nine wickets in five matches — joint-highest for India alongside Varun Chakravarthy, who took his nine in just three games — as India defeated New Zealand in the final. But Shami was below par in the IPL, where he turned out for his new franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad and managed just six wickets in nine innings at an economy rate of 11.23. He had earlier returned to international cricket in the T20I series at home against England in January this year, having last played in the ODI World Cup final in November 2023. In what might come as a major boost to Mohammed Shami's inconsistent appearances in international cricket, the star pacer has been named in Bengal's list of probables for the upcoming domestic season, which might help him push for a spot again in India's international squad. Shami can be a part of the East Zone in the season-opening Duleep Trophy, which begins on August 28, and that event, back to its old inter-zonal format, can mark his comeback to competitive cricket. Shami, a veteran of 64 Tests, 108 ODIs and 25 T20Is, hasn't played for India since the Champions Trophy four months back. All this came after a long layoff during which Shami had ankle surgery and suffered from knee-related niggles. Shami's domestic comeback had been with Bengal in late last year. Besides him, the lineup of probables for Bengal includes all the expected names, including Abhimanyu Easwaran, Akash Deep, Mukesh Kumar, Shahbaz Ahmed and Abishek Porel. Easwaran and Akash are currently in England with the Indian Test team. Shami's absence from the squad came as a slight surprise when the team was announced. 'We've sort of been trying to get him fit for the series, of course, but he's had a little bit of a setback over the last week or so. He's got some MRIs done. I don't think he was going to be able to play five Tests and at the moment, I don't think his workload is where it needs to be," chief selector Ajit Agarkar had said in May. 'It is just the medical guys who've told us that he's been ruled out of this series.
