ASEAN Sec-Gen Hails ‘Twin Successes' Of 46th Summit With Vision 2045, Timor-Leste Admission

By Mohd Iswandi Kasan Anuar JAKARTA, May 28 (Bernama) -- ASEAN Secretary-General Dr Kao Kim Hourn on Wednesday hailed the 46th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur as a success, citing the adoption of the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 and progress toward Timor-Leste's full membership as landmark outcomes. Held under Malaysia's 2025 ASEAN Chairmanship themed 'Inclusivity and Sustainability', the two-day summit embodied the spirit of ASEAN's collective aspirations, he said. Kao highlighted the 'twin successes' of the summit - the launch of the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 with four strategic plans, and the consensus to admit Timor-Leste as ASEAN's 11th full member, with formal induction expected at the October summit. 'Leaders reached consensus on Timor-Leste's full membership during the summit's retreat session,' he said, noting that a dedicated Timor-Leste unit has been established within the ASEAN Secretariat to support the accession process. He made the remarks during a briefing on the summit's outcomes—including the 2nd ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit and the ASEAN-GCC-China Summit—attended by the diplomatic corps and media at the ASEAN Headquarters. Reflecting on the overall outcome, Kao said the summit was successful in terms of participation, substance, and organisation, achieving its intended goals, with a total of 22 outcome documents adopted during the summits. On internal challenges, Kao said ASEAN leaders engaged in 'frank and candid' discussions, particularly regarding the crisis in Myanmar and regional economic pressures. 'External meetings with China and the GCC also emphasised trust-building both within the region and with external partners,' he stressed.

Indonesia Makes Record Meth Bust, Seizes Two Tonnes And Nabs Six Suspects

By Mohd Iswandi Kasan Anuar JAKARTA, May 27 (Bernama) -- Indonesian authorities have seized two tonnes of methamphetamine in the country's largest-ever drug bust and arrested six suspects, including four Indonesian nationals and two Thai citizens, officials said. The narcotics were found aboard the Indonesian-flagged utility vessel MT Sea Dragon Tarawa during a joint operation by Customs, the National Narcotics Agency (BNN), and the Navy, based on intelligence about the ship's suspicious movements. bootstrap slideshow The vessel, believed to have departed from Phuket, Thailand, and was bound for the Philippines, was intercepted on May 20 during a coordinated maritime patrol in the Malacca Strait, according to Customs. 'Authorities escorted the ship to the Tanjung Uncang Customs Dock in Batam, where a full inspection was carried out with the assistance of a K9 unit,' its spokesperson Nirwala Dwi Heryanto said in a statement on Tuesday. The search on May 21 uncovered 67 cartons containing 2,000 packets of methamphetamine, weighing a total of 2,000 kilogrammes. Based on the suspects' statements, he said the drugs were likely intended for the Philippines, and that all six suspects were detained on board during the initial inspection. The operation occurred off the coast of Karimun Anak in the Riau Islands, a known trafficking hotspot due to its proximity to major international shipping lanes. Nirwala said the suspects could face life imprisonment or the death penalty, and that the seizure may have prevented up to eight million people from accessing the drugs.

Indonesia Supports Malaysia's Initiatives To Restore Peace In Myanmar

By Mohd Iswandi Kasan Anuar JAKARTA, May 25 (Bernama) -- Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono has expressed full support for Malaysia's various initiatives, as this year's ASEAN Chair, in facilitating a peaceful resolution to Myanmar's internal conflict. He reaffirmed Indonesia's readiness to continue actively contributing to the restoration of democracy and stability in Myanmar during the Extended Informal Consultation on the Implementation of the Five-Point Consensus (5PC) held in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday. 'ASEAN's strength lies in its unity. In facing the Myanmar crisis, we must speak with one voice and act with one purpose to push for the full implementation of the 5PC,' he said, according to a statement from the Foreign Ministry on Sunday. The meeting, held ahead of the 46th ASEAN Summit, served as an informal forum for ASEAN foreign ministers and special envoys for Myanmar to discuss developments in Myanmar and explore ways to effectively implement the 5PC. The 5PC was adopted by ASEAN in April 2021 following the military coup in Myanmar on Feb 1 that year. It calls for an immediate cessation of violence, inclusive dialogue among all parties, the appointment of a special envoy, the delivery of humanitarian assistance, and for the envoy to be granted access to all relevant stakeholders in Myanmar. Despite its significance, implementation of the consensus has largely stalled due to the junta's continued non-compliance, with the issue remaining a central concern in ASEAN's ongoing engagement with Myanmar. The 46th ASEAN Summit is being held under Malaysia's 2025 Chairmanship theme, 'Inclusivity and Sustainability'. This year also marks the country's fifth time at the helm of the regional grouping since its previous chairmanships in 1977, 1997, 2005, and 2015. ASEAN comprises 10 member states: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
