Home minister: Police to exhume Zara Qairina's body for post-mortem after AGC directive
MACHANG, Aug 9 — The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) will exhume the body of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir as soon as possible to complete the investigation into her death. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said this followed instructions issued by the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) yesterday for the exhumation of the girl's body to allow a post-mortem procedure to be carried out. 'The police will implement the decision. I was briefed by the Inspector-General of Police (Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail) this morning that the police will immediately carry out the procedure. 'Of course, the focus by the police is to update the investigation, collect all evidence and in carrying out this task, the police will not compromise on the principle of justice because we need to be fair to everyone involved, including the family of the late Zara and the school,' he said here today. He was met by reporters after the opening of the 'Ijtimak Madani Ulama dan Guru Pondok Kelantan 2025' by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Machang campus here. Saifuddin Nasution assured that the police will keep the public informed with the latest updates on the case from time to time. In a statement yesterday, the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) announced that the body of Zara Qairina would be exhumed to allow a post-mortem examination to be conducted. The AGC stated that further investigations by the police were necessary to ensure all aspects of the case were thoroughly examined. Zara Qairina, 13, was confirmed dead at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, on July 17. She had been rushed to the hospital after being found unconscious in a drain near the dormitory of a religious school in Papar at about 4 am on July 16. — Bernama

Police warn against sharing unverified info on Zara Qairina's death
KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has issued a stern warning against sharing unverified information regarding the death of 13-year-old student Zara Qairina Mahathir. Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail confirmed the circulation of misleading content and images tied to the case on social media. He emphasised that such actions risk disrupting investigations and misleading the public. 'The investigation, including post-mortem procedures, follows legal protocols, and all parties must refrain from spreading unverified details,' he stated. Violators may face charges under Section 15 of the Child Act 2001 for revealing a minor's identity or Section 203A of the Penal Code for unauthorised disclosure. Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 also penalises misuse of online platforms for spreading false information. Zara Qairina was pronounced dead at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu on 17 July after being found unconscious near her school dormitory. Police are finalising the investigation following a review by the Attorney-General's Chambers. - Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 — The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) is urging all parties to stop any action of uploading or sharing unverified information related to the death of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir. Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said police have detected the spread of information and a child's pictures linked to the Zara Qairina case by irresponsible parties on social media. He stated that the shared information is inaccurate and has the potential to confuse the public, besides potentially affecting the ongoing investigation and hindering the process of justice for all involved. 'The entire investigation process for the case, including the post-mortem issue, is being conducted according to existing procedures and legal provisions, and all parties are advised to stop any action of uploading or sharing unverified information, including disclosing information related to the case investigation,' he said in a statement tonight. Mohd Khalid said the act of disclosing information related to the case can be investigated under Section 15 of the Child Act 2001, which involves a prohibition on revealing the identity, address, school name, and pictures of the child involved, as well as Section 203A of the Penal Code for offenses related to the disclosure of information. 'The individuals involved can also be investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of a network facility or network service. Adherence to the law is the basis of national peace and well-being. Any violation will be met with firm action in accordance with existing provisions,' he said. Zara Qairina, 13, was confirmed to have died at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah on July 17. The student was taken to the hospital after being found unconscious in a drain near the dormitory of a religious school in Papar at 4 am on July 16. The investigation into the case is currently being finalised by the police after being returned by the Attorney-General's Chambers yesterday. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR: Bukit Aman has detected the circulation of information and photographs of children linked to the ongoing Zara Qairina Mahathir's case being uploaded and shared on various social media platforms, says Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail. The Inspector-General of Police said the information being disseminated is inaccurate and has the potential to mislead the public. 'This kind of behaviour not only hampers the investigation process but may also interfere with the fair administration of justice,' he said in a statement on Wednesday (Aug 6). He also stressed that all investigative procedures, including the post-mortem process, are being conducted in accordance with established legal provisions and protocols. "We urge the public to refrain from uploading or sharing any unverified information, particularly content related to the ongoing investigation. 'The sharing of false or speculative content could jeopardise the case and cause unnecessary distress,' he added. Sharing of fake and unverified information pertaining to the case is an offence, he said. "It is an offence under Section 15 of the Child Act 2001, which prohibits the publication of any information that could lead to the identification of a child involved in any legal proceedings, Section 203A of the Penal Code for disclosing information obtained in the course of one's duties and Section 233 of the Communication and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities or network services," he said. The IGP said compliance with the law is the foundation of national peace and public well-being. "Firm action will be taken against any individual found to have violated these provisions. "We are committed to ensuring public safety and order are maintained at all times in the interest of all Malaysians," he added.

Police to submit Zara Qairina case file to AGC today
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 4 — Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail has reportedly said that police will submit their investigation paper on the death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir to the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) today. 'The investigation paper into the case has been completed, and it will be submitted to the deputy public prosecutor today, insya-Allah,' he was quoted as saying by Malaysiakini. According to the report, the AGC is expected to issue a press statement on the matter later today. On Saturday, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail confirmed that police had concluded their probe, with around 60 witness statements recorded during the course of the investigation. Zara, a Form One student at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama (SMKA) Tun Datu Mustapha in Papar, Sabah, was found critically injured in a drain beneath her school dormitory in the early hours of July 16, after reportedly falling from the third floor. She died the following day at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu. Her body was buried on July 17 without a post-mortem, prompting her mother to seek legal steps to exhume the grave for an autopsy, amid public concern and questions over the cause of death.
