Don't panic Eskom says after Koeberg Nuclear Power Station siren activated
The siren emitted a brief alarm tone. Residents of a suburb in Cape Town were left shocked and panic-stricken when Siren 913, part of the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station's Public Notification System, was inadvertently activated. Siren 913, located in the green belt opposite West Coast Village in Sunningdale, went off at about 2pm on Wednesday, leaving people concerned that a problem had occurred at Koeberg. Don't panic Eskom spokesperson Daphne Mokwena said the siren was activated during routine maintenance and urged the public not to panic. 'The siren emitted a brief alarm tone. Eskom would like to assure the public that there is no emergency at the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station, and no action is required from members of the public. 'This has no impact on the normal operations of the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station. Siren 913 is one of more than 80 sirens that form part of the Public Notification System supporting the Koeberg Nuclear Emergency Plan,' Mokwena said. 'We sincerely apologise for any concern or inconvenience caused by this unintentional activation. We appreciate the public's understanding and cooperation,' Mokwena said. No load shedding Meanwhile, as the winter season approaches, Eskom has denied reports that it plans to implement 14-hour load shedding. This comes after a post was circulated on social media platforms about the rolling blackout next month. '14-hour load shedding: Residents of Gauteng and the Northern Cape are set to face significant disruptions this week with a scheduled 14-hour load shedding. As the national power grid struggles to meet demand, these prolonged outages are expected to impact daily life significantly,' the post claimed. Fake news Eskom labelled the report as fake news. 'Eskom categorically rejects the false claims circulating online about a 14-hour outage or imminent load shedding. These reports are completely untrue'. Eskom said the power system is stable. Eskom denies reports of 14-hour load shedding in June
Eskom said the power system is stable. As the winter season approaches, Eskom has denied reports that it plans to implement 14-hour load shedding. 'Load shedding has remained suspended since 22:00 on 15 May 2025. There are no planned outages of this scale. 'Misinformation causes unnecessary alarm. Stay informed— trust only official Eskom updates on our official platforms. Be vigilant, verify information before you share,' Eskom said. ALSO READ: Load shedding caution despite Eskom's confidence [VIDEO] Winter outlook Meanwhile, Eskom spokesperson Daphne Mokwena said the power system demonstrated resilience as the cold front hit some parts of the country. 'System constraints remain, and adequate emergency reserves are in place and strategically deployed to support demand during the morning and evening peak winter periods. 'As the winter season sets in, planned maintenance has gradually decreased, averaging 4 482MW this week (16 to 22 May 2025)—slightly higher than the typical winter maintenance levels in prior years,' Mokwena said. Diesel expenditure She said the Open-Cycle Gas Turbine (OCGT) load factor decreased to 7.65% compared to 10.94% in the previous week (9 to 15 May 2025). 'The diesel expenditure is still within budget for the current financial year. Diesel usage is expected to decline further as more units return from long-term repairs and maintenance activities are reduced, increasing available generation capacity'. Load shedding in Winter Mokwena said the winter outlook covering the period ending 31 August 2025, remains valid. She said it indicates that load shedding will not be necessary if unplanned outages stay below 13 000MW. 'If outages rise to 15 000MW, load shedding would be limited to a maximum of 21 days out of 153 days and restricted to stage 2,' Mokwena said. Orlando Pirates set sights on a list of top wingers
Orlando Pirates are casting their net far and wide as they prepare to bolster their squad ahead of next season's intense campaign. With multiple competitions on the horizon, the Soweto giants are prioritising dynamic attacking talent, and one name stands out. The Buccaneers have reportedly placed Upington City's Trevor Mokwena under close watch. The 24-year-old winger has dazzled this season in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, finding the back of the net nine times for the Gucci Boys, according to The NFD . His form has not gone unnoticed by Orlando Pirates' scouting department. A source confirmed the club's interest. 'The team is looking at different wingers who could bolster the squad next season and because there is competition for Marumo Gallants winger Daniel Msendami then it's believed that they are monitoring Upington City winger Trevor Mokwena. Apparently they have enquired about him and they were just waiting for the end of the season to look at other logistics.' Mokwena, formerly with the University of Pretoria, has emerged as one of the most lethal wide players. His pace, precision, and goal-scoring instinct make him a strong contender for a top-flight move. Alongside Mokwena, Orlando Pirates remain interested in TS Galaxy winger Kamogelo Sebelebele, a player long linked with a move to the club. The same source revealed: 'Actually these three, Sebelebele, Msendami and now Trevor Mokwena — are like the main targets as far as wingers are concerned. Yes, there are other departments that the club is believed to have enquired about. But now they are monitoring Trevor Mokwena from Upington City.' With eyes firmly on silverware, Orlando Pirates are clearly looking to reinforce their squad depth across the board. While wingers are the current priority, whispers around striker and defender signings suggest a comprehensive transfer strategy is already in motion. Which winger should Orlando Pirates sign? Rulani Mokwena pens emotional letter to Wydad fans as he leaves the club
Rulani Mokwena has penned an emotional letter to Wydad Casablanca players, supporters and staff after his departure from the club after nine turbulent months in Morocco. During his tenure, when he received persistent criticism from supporters and a section of former players, Mokwena was in charge of 27 Botola Pro League matches. During his time in charge, he managed 11 wins, 12 draws and four defeats and was absent from the last three matches after being put on special leave. Wydad ended the regular season in third place with 54 points from 30 games and because of this they failed to qualify for the Champions League for the second successive season. 'With heartfelt gratitude, I'm stepping away from my role at Wydad AC to embark on the next chapter of my coaching journey,' Mokwena said in the letter.

Rulani Mokwena on a brink of signing with a new club?
South African coach Rulani Mokwena is on the verge of joining Egyptian giants Zamalek. The 38-year-old recently parted ways with Wydad Casablanca after just one season. The team finished third in the Botola Pro League but had to fight through a difficult midseason. At one point, it seemed Wydad would finish second and qualify for the CAF Champions League, but a streak of seven consecutive draws ultimately led to Rulani Mokwena's dismissal. The coach bid farewell after the club played their last match of the season, although he was not on the bench for the final three matches. The 38-year-old former Mamelodi Sundowns mentor has been linked to Zamalek this week. 'South African coach Rulani Mokwena is close to embarking on a new coaching experience in the Egyptian Premier League after receiving an offer from Zamalek to take over the team for the upcoming period,' Radio Mars reported. 'This development comes just hours after Wydad Athletic Club announced the mutual termination of Mokwena's contract, following a period in which he had not achieved results that satisfied fans' expectations,' they concluded. Mokwena was recently linked to Orlando Pirates after the Soweto giants parted ways with Jose Riveiro. The former Downs coach has been at the Buccaneers before, but his tenure was unsuccessful. Many Pirates fans were not keen on having Rulani Mokwena back and instead asked for the club management to call on experienced South African coach Pitso Mosimane. Jingles has been available since leaving Iran earlier this year.
