Syracuse firefighters spend several hours battling blaze at historic landmark
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — A busy Friday night turned into a busy morning for Syracuse firefighters, after a massive blaze erupted at the historic Maria Regina College campus on the city's North Side.
'It was a massive fire. One of the biggest fires we've had in our city in decades,' said Syracuse Fire Chief Michael Monds.
More than 65 firefighters were needed after a four-alarm fire was called around 6:30 p.m.
'The first firefighters on scene, they took hose lines and they stretched them to the fourth floor. That's where the fire was and they were attempting to extinguish the fire, the fire just had too much of an advance head start on us,' said Chief Monds.

To make matters worse, crews had already been battling a separate fire on Carbon Street. As a result, 11 people were displaced from their homes.
'Before that fire was totally extinguished, we got reports of a fire up here on Court Street. A bunch of crews from that fire responded to get an analysis of what was going on here and when they showed up, there was fire coming through the roof,' said Chief Monds.
Crews were finally able to put out the Court Street fire around 5 a.m. on Saturday. However, as of Saturday afternoon, dozens of firefighters were still on scene, working to extinguish hot spots.
The department says a firefighter who responded to both fires was treated and released at the scene. No other injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated. Syracuse Police are also looking into reports made by neighbors who say they saw people running from the building when the fire started.
