Canal+ to Distribute Netflix in Francophone Africa in Landmark Pact
Canal+ has signed a first-of-its-kind distribution deal with Netflix that will see the French pay-TV player carry Netflix content for countries across Sub-Saharan Africa. Starting next month, Canal+ will offer its subscribers across 24 French-speaking African countries Netflix original content, from global hits such as Stranger Things, Money Heist, Squid Game, and Emily in Paris, to the streamer's African production slate, which includes South Africa drama Blood & Water, Nigerian series Blood Sisters, and reality series Young Famous and African. The French group currently operates 28 pay-TV channels dedicated to African audiences. The French group is currently in the process of acquiring pan-African pay-TV group MultiChoice, the continent's largest pay-TV player, which operates in 50 countries with 19.3 million subscribers. Netflix does not break out its subscriber figures for Africa, combining them in the larger Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region, but the streamer is estimated to have fewer than 5 million subscribers on the continent, with the vast majority of those in the English-speaking countries of South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya. 'Our millions of African subscribers will benefit from a unique offer, bringing together the best of Canal+ and Netflix content in a joint package,' said Pascale Chabert, chief content acquisition officer of Canal+, in a statement. 'This new agreement demonstrates Canal+'s ability to extend its unique super-aggregation model beyond the European continent.' During the pandemic-era streaming boom, Netflix, along with other global streamers, invested heavily in original African content in a bid to boost subscriber numbers and touted the continent, with its low streaming penetration rates and large, young population, as a future growth market. However, as Wall Street has changed its metric of success from subscriber growth to revenue per user, Africa slipped out of focus for the global streamers. Unlike Amazon Prime, which cut its investment in original programming on the continent, Netflix continues to back African originals, with such South African series as Kings of Jo'Burg and Fatal Seduction. Emma Lloyd, vp, partnerships EMEA at Netflix, said the Canal+ deal 'will allow us to reach even more people across French-speaking African countries. It's a big win for entertainment fans and part of our ongoing mission to make the member experience even better.' The Canal+ deal follows similar distribution agreements between Canal+ and Netflix for Poland and France. Netflix just dropped a chaotic trailer for the next crime thriller from the creators of 'Money Heist' — and it looks like a wild watch
Miss "Money Heist?" Netflix recently dropped a teaser trailer (and release date!) for the creators' next show, "Billionaires' Bunker" — and it looks like a gripping watch. Swapping break-ins for sit-ins, Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato's upcoming Spanish crime thriller invites us inside a luxury, "Fallout"-style underground bunker alongside a group of super-rich elites who've locked themselves away in fear of global conflict. Judging by the scenes in this "Billionaires' Bunker" teaser, life within the bunker really goes off the rails. Check it out below: Soundtracked with the incongruously cheery song, "Downtown," the teaser wastes little time before showing that life inside Kimera Underground Park (where they've taken shelter) is going to be anything but easy. Within about 1 minute's worth of footage, we see snapshots of fraught relationships, disagreements, fights, emotional troubles, and an explosive hint that life as we know it (i.e., outside this powderkeg setting) might well be coming to its end. Clearly, tensions between these billionaires (and the staff locked away along with them!) are about to run very high indeed... Can't wait to see what's in store? This first "Billionaires' Bunker" teaser confirms that we'll be stepping inside this exclusive new home in just a few months, as the new series premieres exclusively on Netflix on Friday, September 19. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. If the above chaos wasn't enough to earn "Billionaires' Bunker" a spot on your September watchlist, Netflix has already shared a synopsis for the new series. It reads: "In a luxury bunker designed to endure any imaginable catastrophe, a group of billionaires is forced to coexist after locking themselves in due to the threat of an unprecedented global conflict. Kimera Underground Park becomes a claustrophobic setting for two families marked by a wound from the past. Isolated underground and with no possibility of escape, they unleash personalities uncovering their most unconfessable secrets. But the most unexpected alliances also emerge. An excessive and surprising emotional X-ray of billionaires living in a golden hole." We've also had confirmation of which stars will be taking up residence within the "Billionaires' Bunker." The series stars Miren Ibarguren, Joaquín Furriel, Natalia Verbeke, Carlos Santos, Montse Guallar, Pau Simón, Alicia Falcó, Agustina Bisio, and Álex Villazán, among others. Sony Pictures Television (SPT) has found its Carlota. Belinda, the Spanish-born Mexican Latin pop star is poised to topline as the titular 'Carlota,' the Empress of Mexico, in SPT's most ambitious Latin American series to date. More from Variety Netflix's 'Avatar: the Last Airbender' Casts Seven Including Dichen Lachman, Dolly de Leon and Tantoo Cardinal 'Clash of Clans' Animated Series Ordered at Netflix Netflix Greenlights Korean Thriller 'The Rat' and Rom-Com 'Lovestuck' The high-concept project is among the hot picks in the studio's presentation to LA Screenings attendees on Tuesday, May 20. Set to start production later in the year, the 10 x 45' dramatic series is inspired by the true story of Carlota of Habsburg, Mexico's first and only Empress. It reimagines a visionary royal ahead of her time, following Carlota's arrival in Mexico full of idealism and determined to change the world. But as political unrest deepens and cultural tensions rise, she finds herself entangled in a far more complex reality, including a love story that defies fairy-tale expectations. As Carlota and her husband Maximilian attempt to build a new empire, they are drawn into a dangerous web of ambition, loyalty and betrayal. 'To be filmed across Mexico, Colombia and Spain, 'Carlota' is a powerful milestone in our journey to establish Sony Pictures Television as a leading entertainment producer in Latin America,' said SPT's John Rossiter, executive VP, Distribution, Networks & Production, Latin America, adding: 'This project underscores our dedication to crafting top tier stories that connect with audiences not only in Latin America but across the globe.' 'It's a truly international series in scope,' Rossiter told Variety, who conceded that SPT Latin America was spurred by the growing number of large-scale local series currently streaming on the platforms. The company will be tapping the incentives of each territory. Belinda ('Killer Women') leads a stellar Spanish and Latin American cast that includes Jaime Lorente ('Money Heist') as Maximiliano , Miguel Ángel Silvestre ('Sense8') as Alfred Van Der Smissen and Mexico's Mabel Cadena ('Black Panther: Wakanda Forever') as Josefa. 'Money Heist' director Alejandro Bazzano and Ana Lorena Pérez Ríos (HBO Max's 'Like Water for Chocolate') are attached to direct the series. 'In addition to the talent and high production values, at its core 'Carlota' has an emotional and authentic story which we believe will resonate with Mexican audiences and also have great global appeal,' Rossiter remarked, noting that historical costume dramas tend to do well on streamers. SPT Latin America's most recent venture into larger scale production is 'Yo No Soy Mendoza,' which debuted last month on Netflix and landed on the streaming giant's Top 10 Non-English TV Shows list globally and is among the Top 10 in 14 countries across Latin America. 'Yo No Soy Mendoza' follows Julian Garcia, a smooth-talking debt collector who is kidnapped and forced to pose as corrupt casino owner Esteban Mendoza and marry the businessman's fiancé. Thrust into Mendoza's dangerous world, Julian must dodge deadly enemies while juggling his old life and new identity. He soon discovers that beneath the chaos, the fight worth having is for something far more personal. 'Our development pipeline is exploding, the challenge is to decide which ones to do first,' said Rossiter, who added that this included unscripted shows. The 'Carlota' production team is led by Coty Cagliolo, SPT's senior VP & managing director, production, Latin & U.S. Hispanic and Carlos Quintanilla Sakar, VP & head of content and production, LatAm and USH, who serves as executive producer and showrunner, alongside executive producers Alejandro García and Madelaine Contreras. Cash ‘rains' as snatching bid at UP dhaba runs into rough weather; locals return businessman's Rs 5.65 lakh
Video grab shows people collecting currency notes scattered on the road PRAYAGRAJ : In a bizarre episode reminiscent of a scene from popular Netflix series Money Heist, a sudden shower of currency notes stunned onlookers and customers at a dhaba on Prayagraj-Kanpur highway in Uttar Pradesh's Kaushambi district -till they realised the 'windfall' had come from a snatching bid having run into rough weather. As the cash flew around Jaiswal Dhaba late Thursday evening, it sparked a mad scramble to collect the money with hardly a thought about where the notes came from. But the bigger surprise, a pleasant one, came later when cops and Good Samaritans appealed to people to return the cash to its rightful owner, Bhavesh Kumar Barot , explaining to them he had been the victim of the snatching attempt. They returned -every single one of them -the full stash of Rs 5.65 lakh. Police said Gujarat-based businessman Barot had collected payments in Prayagraj and was headed to Delhi on a bus that had stopped at the eatery around 9.15pm. As the snatcher took away his bag filled with the cash, it burst open and the notes spilled out, scattering in the wind and leading to the scrum. His plan thwarted, the snatcher fled. Cops, alerted about the crime, arrived soon after and intervened to ensure Barot got his cash back from the people who had collected it. In a heartwarming display of community spirit, co-passengers and staff at the dhaba also joined the recovery effort. Many scoped up the scattered cash and handed them back to Barot along with some of other items that had fallen out.

A thief, flying cash, and a twist - UP dhaba crowd returns every note
In an incident that seemed straight out of the Netflix crime drama 'Money Heist', a surreal 'rain' of currency stunned people at the Jaiswal Dhaba, located along the Prayagraj-Kanpur highway in Uttar Pradesh's Kaushambi district. What initially appeared to be a bizarre stroke of luck for diners and travellers soon unravelled into the dramatic aftermath of a foiled theft attempt. The peculiar scene unfolded around 9:15pm on Thursday when Bhavesh Kumar Barot, a businessman from Gujarat, was en route to Delhi after concluding business dealings in Prayagraj. Travelling aboard a luxury coach, Barot alighted with fellow passengers at the dhaba for a short refreshment halt. It was during this brief stop that an unidentified thief made a sudden attempt to snatch Barot's bag, which was reportedly stuffed with cash amounting to ₹ 5.65 lakh, TOI reported. In the chaos that ensued, the bag burst open, releasing a flurry of currency notes into the air. A strong gust of wind carried the notes in multiple directions, creating an astonishing sight that instantly drew the attention of bystanders and diners. As people scrambled to collect the airborne cash, what looked like a scene of opportunism quickly turned into an unexpected display of public conscience. Once local authorities and members of the public were made aware of the true nature of the incident, an appeal was made - both by the police and by good samaritans present at the dhaba - for people to return the money to its rightful owner. In a show of honesty, "every single one of them—and all of it!" was handed back to Barot, according to the police. Speaking to the media, Barot expressed heartfelt appreciation for the integrity shown by the public and his co-passengers. He credited the swift and sincere efforts of the dhaba staff and fellow travellers for helping him recover the entirety of his belongings, including clothing that had also fallen from the bag during the scuffle. Meanwhile, Kokhraj police have launched an investigation and registered an FIR against the unknown culprit under section 62 of the BNS (attempt to commit offence). Authorities are reviewing available CCTV footage and questioning witnesses in an effort to identify and apprehend the perpetrator.
