Man fatally struck while riding a lawn mower at night in northwest Charlotte, police say
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Detectives are investigating after a man was fatally struck while riding a lawn mower at night in northwest Charlotte. Police responded to reports of an accident with injuries near the 5700 block of Freedom Drive, on May 20 around 9 p.m. When officers arrived, they found an unresponsive man, 63-year-old Dexter Leon Monk, lying in the middle of the road with life-threatening injuries and a 2001 Chrysler Town & Country with damage to the front of the vehicle. The driver, 58-year-old Kevin David, was stopped in the middle of the roadway. Medic responded and pronounced Monk dead at the scene. Police say David was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured. The initial investigation showed that Monk was riding a lawn mower westbound on Freedom Drive when he was struck from behind by a vehicle. David was screened for impairment and was found to be not impaired. Neither speed nor impairment are suspected factors in the crash for David. However, police believe Monk may have been impaired.
