Teen pleads guilty in deadly Rochester crash that involved stolen car
A Rochester teenager on Wednesday pleaded guilty in Monroe County Court to his role in a May 2024 crash that involved a stolen car and killed a 14-year-old passenger. Anthony Barnes Jr., now 18, pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter, the top count of the felony indictment, according to the Monroe County District Attorney's Office. The crash, which involved a stolen vehicle, occurred on Bloss Street around 7 p.m. on May 3, 2024. Officers said that the vehicle overturned due Barnes' reckless driving. Witnesses reported the westbound vehicle was speeding and driving erratically on Bloss Street as several people were hanging out of the car's windows. The driver lost control, the car fishtailed, overturned and came to rest in a Bloss Street yard. Six teens were in the car - ranging in age from 11 to 17. Jazzmeir Mouzon-Henton, 14, suffered serious injuries in the crash and died three days after the crash. Barnes is to be sentenced to 5 to 15 years in the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, which is the maximum sentence allowed by New York State Law, according to the DA's Office. Assistant District Attorney Kelly Pettrone, who prosecuted the case, said the plea was important as Barnes was taking responsibility for his "terrible decision." Jazzmeir's death, she was, "was entirely preventable." 'Jazzmeir Mouzon-Henton was a young teenager with his entire life ahead of him,' Monroe County District Attorney Sandra Doorley said in a news release. 'A series of reckless choices made by Anthony Barnes Jr. led to this devastating loss. Because of his actions, Jazzmeir's family was robbed of their loved one, and Anthony Barnes, Jr. will face the consequences of his decisions while incarcerated." Barnes is scheduled to be sentenced by Monroe County Court Judge Julie Hahn on Aug. 14. Monroe County Jail deputies plead guilty to role in inmate fights
Two deputies from the Monroe County Jail have admitted to official misconduct after an investigation into inmate fights last fall. Both deputies were arrested in March after a three-month-long internal investigation led to criminal charges. Deputy Dominic Kujawa, 21, was charged with felony assault and official misconduct after the sheriff's office accused him of "enabling" one inmate to assault another and failing to intervene during the fight. While investigating that incident, jail officials accused a second deputy, 20-year-old Dominic Denaro, of alerting inmates before cell searches. Denaro was arraigned on misdemeanor charges including official misconduct and obstruction of governmental administration. Both men pleaded guilty May 30 to the official misconduct charges, with an agreed-upon sentence of three years probation, the Monroe County District Attorney's Office confirmed. In March, the sheriff's office said it planned to fire Kujawa. He resigned shortly after. Denaro has also resigned from his post. Jail officials in December announced they were investigating a series of fights between two inmates inside the jail's housing unit. One person needed hospital treatment for injuries. An inmate told a supervisor about the fights and the alleged involvement of jail deputies during routine rounds, officials said. Two other unnamed deputies remain on leave as internal and criminal investigations continue. — Kayla Canne covers community safety for the Democrat and Chronicle with a focus on police accountability, government surveillance and how people are impacted by violence. Andrae Evans loses party nomination for Irondequoit Town Supervisor
Editor's Note: An Irondequoit representative has re-clarified the number of votes Perticone and Evans received. The story has been updated to reflect this. ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Irondequoit Democrats are going in a new direction for leadership as Town Supervisor Andrae Evans faces sexual harassment allegations. The Irondequoit Democratic Committee voted on Wednesday for their chosen supervisor candidate. Councilman John Perticone won 36 votes while Evans got 11. This comes after an investigative report accused Evans of numerous instances of inappropriate and sexual remarks. After issuing an apology, Evans denied the allegations, saying they appear to be for political reasons. The allegations have led to the Monroe County District Attorney's Office investigating Evans for potential criminal conduct. The Irondequoit Town Board is also expected to censure Evans at a special meeting Thursday night. Despite the allegations, Evans said he does not plan to resign and will continue to seek re-election. The primary is in June. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Ontario County DA race: Prosecutor Jason MacBride to challenge incumbent James Ritts
CANANDAIGUA, NY — Republican Jason MacBride, a career prosecutor, has announced his candidacy for Ontario County District Attorney in the upcoming 2025 election. MacBride will be running up against the incumbent DA, James Ritts, who announced in October that he will be seeking this third term for DA. Currently, MacBride serves as an Assistant County Attorney for Ontario County as a juvenile prosecutor. He also counsels the Ontario County Department of Social Services in investigations and court proceedings involving child abuse and neglect. According to his statement, MacBride was the First Assistant District Attorney for Ontario County for over 10 years before joining the County Attorney's Office. He also worked as a prosecutor at the Monroe County District Attorney's Office for eight years. In a statement, MacBride said he would be entering the race with a commitment to deliver justice and to restore a "collaborative and respectful partnership with the law enforcement community." 'The DA's Office, and the victims it serves, deserves a leader who will do everything in his power to protect the children and families of Ontario County, ' MacBride said. 'I am ready to fight and restore the public's trust in our top law enforcement office.' The incumbent Ontario County District Attorney James Ritts, who is also running as a Republican for his third term as the DA, said he was shocked to learn about MacBride's campaign announcement. "But what I will say is every victim has always had a voice in my office. Every victim has always been supported, and every victim will be supported under my administration," Ritts said. The two will be gunning for the republican spot in the Ontario County Primary Election, which will be held on Tuesday, June 24. Ritts believes that he and his staff have been running the office with integrity, honor and honesty, he said. He said that he runs his office based on the county he represents and that his team has been dedicated to making sure that every victim has a voice, which he said he plans to continue doing moving forward. The decision will be left up to the Republican Party. "We'll see what the party does," Ritts said. "You know, I sit here as an incumbent with 26 years of experience with a staff that is available and works 24 hours a day, seven days a week when necessary. You're not going to find a better staff and a more dedicated staff than we have in this office right now." According to MacBride's statement, if he gets elected as the DA in the upcoming election he pledges to: Aggressively prosecute child rapists and murderers. Lock up dangerous drug dealers who seek to destroy our community. Prevent and crack down on drunk drivers who endanger our streets. Treat each and every crime victim with the respect they deserve. Restore a strong partnership with our law enforcement agencies. Monroe County DA's Office launches investigation into Irondequoit Town Supervisor
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The Monroe County District Attorney's Office is launching an investigation into Irondequoit Town Supervisor Andrae Evans. According to the DA's Office, Sandra Doorley will be investigating Evans for potential criminal conduct or removal from office. This stems from allegations that he made sexual remarks to a female employee. An investigative report was released accusing Evans of violating the town's anti-harassment and sexual harassment policies. The report lists instances of strange text messages and sexual remarks allegedly made by Evans towards female employees. The report also accuses Evans of retaliating against an employee. The Irondequoit Town Board recently called the findings of an investigation into the sexual harassment allegations as 'unacceptable.' Previously, Evans apologized but said he did not plan on re-signing and sought re-election. However, during Monday's town board meeting, he claimed he was unjustly accused for political reasons. The DA's Office says it will review the current findings and conduct an outside investigation to determine if criminal charges are appropriate.
