Morning News Recap: Three arrested following disruption at Jacksonville City Hall

The Wednesday edition of Jacksonville's Morning News is following the arrest of three people following commotion at the Jacksonville City Council meeting last night. First Alert Weather headline: Heat and humidity with a few afternoon storms. Chief Meteorologist Mike Buresh says we're nearing an all-time May record for the number of days at/above 90 degrees. An isolated shower/storm will likely develop between 3 and 5 pm. Highs will stay in the lower to mid 90s tomorrow. The weekend is looking mainly dry with highs in the mid to upper 80s and lower humidity. Three Big Things to Know: A drive-thru argument spills over into gunfire at a Deerwood Dunkin Donuts. Jacksonville police say a woman was shot multiple times around 5:30 pm yesterday as she was walking away from a car in the drive-thru. Police say the suspect fired two times, hitting the woman in the shoulder and back of the head, before fleeing. The vehicle was later stopped on the northside and the suspect was taken into custody. Jacksonville International Airport's hourly garage is considered a crime scene, as federal investigators look into what started a fire nearly two weeks ago. Once the cause of the fire is determined, construction crews will begin to work their way through the third and fourth floors, assess the damage, and decide how the structure can be repaired. A local family is grieving after their loved one was killed in a hit and run at the Walgreens on Merrill Road. It's a story we followed throughout the morning yesterday. Family members identify the victim as 40-year-old Brandon Venegas. No suspect or vehicle description was provided by police. Urgency behind study of Baymeadows Road safety

Top stories for Wednesday, May 21, 2025 on Jacksonville's Morning News. Another hot day before a few afternoon showers/storms. Highs will return to the mid 90s today. First Alert Chief Meteorologist Mike Buresh is tracking a few afternoon showers after 2-3 pm in SE Georgia and 3-5 pm in NE Florida. Everyone won't seen rain today, but a few locally heavy downpours are likely with some gusty winds of 40+ mph. A cool front will pass this evening ushering in some drier air. Afternoon highs get knocked down just a bit to near 90 degrees on Thursday. This weekend will be seasonably hot and mainly dry. Three Big Things to Know: Jacksonville City Council Member Joe Carlucci says FDOT will conduct a study on a stretch of Baymeadows Road where a local father and his baby died after a collision. Mitchell Patch and his son Everett were hit while trying to cross Baymeadows in front of Wicked Barley. There are no convenient crosswalks near the establishment. Carlucci says he's making some kind of traffic adjustment a priority. There had been eight previous crashes in front of Wicked Barley since 2023, before Friday's incident, according to JSO crash data. Investigators believe they have found the source of the fire at Jacksonville International Airport. The Jacksonville Aviation Authority Police Department released a report that finds the fire started in a mid-size BMW that parked in the hourly garage four hours earlier. Smoke was seen coming from beneath the front of the car, and in about a minute, the car was fully engulfed in fire. There's no word on how it started, though. The fire spread to 50 other cars. The man chosen to run the St. Johns County school district can't wait to get going. Brennan Asplen was selected in a unanimous vote. He's currently deputy superintendent of operations. Asplen says he'll visit every school in the district to talk with teachers and administrators. He also wants to do more outreach with the community.

Developers have withdrawn a proposal to swap 600 acres of land in the Guana River Wildlife Management Area into private hands following widespread backlash. A letter we've obtained from Upland's representative was sent to the state Department of Environmental Protection deputy secretary announcing the withdrawal. In the letter, a representative for The Upland LLC said there was 'never any intention to develop the acquired land for commercial or community development purposes.' Some Jacksonville residents are calling for change after a deadly crash. Duval County Public Schools teacher Mitchell Patch and his one-year-old son died after getting hit by a car Friday night while crossing Baymeadows Road. FDOT says if improvements can be made to enhance safety, it'll work to implement them.
