Spotted! Everyone's Dotting Their Dresses With Sweet Polka Dots

For most fashion people, a dress (of any kind) is more than a trend; it's a necessity, whether it's a midi for work, a semi-sheer shift for vacations, or a little white number for off-duty. It's not a stretch to say the right arsenal of one-and-done dresses can serve as the cornerstone of a well-curated wardrobe each season. And one style—or should we say, print—currently captivating our attention? The polka-dot dress. Vogue's Favorite Polka Dot Dresses: Polka dot-printed clothing is quite classic—just think back to the brown polka dot dress Julia Roberts wore with little white gloves in Pretty Woman, or the stippled red prom dress from Grease. It's never fully vanished, but we did take note of the print's revival during the spring/summer 2025 shows, when it dotted the collections of Valentino, Carolina Herrera, Moschino, and Rodarte, to name a few. On the streets of Australian Fashion Week, showgoers embraced it in a playful way, mixing and matching spots of all sizes for welcome contrast. On the market now are reinvigorated colors, silhouettes, and details that challenge what a classic polka dot can be. Think of Bode's bubble-shaped dots, Marina Moscone's draped and twisted interpretation, or even Christopher John Rogers's abstract take. Posse's strappy dress comes in a bright red, great for the beach, while Zara's graphic maxi is fit for a sophisticated summer soirée, where dancing is aplenty. For tried-and-true black and white combinations, look to the high-end brands, like Saint Laurent and Zimmermann. For a more affordable way into the trend, turn to Mango, and Sea. These are more of polka dot dresses to wear this summer, below. Reformation Delilah linen halter maxi dress $278 NORDSTROM Dolce & Gabbana polka dot ruched satin sheath dress $3,395 NORDSTROM

Maggie Alderson no longer ‘wastes' her money on this designer item

This story is part of the June 1 edition of Sunday Life. See all 14 stories. Each week, we quiz a prominent person about their style and the inspiration behind it. Ahead, writer Maggie Alderson. How would you describe your style? It's a high-low mix of new, second-hand and what I call 'me vintage' – designer pieces that I've had for longer than 20 years. What are the oldest things in your wardrobe? A black velvet opera coat from the 1920s and my dad's cashmere cardigans. They are my treasures. And the most recent addition? A pair of dark denim wide-leg jeans. I'm trying to limit my new garments to six a year; I'm at three already. What would you wear … on a first date? A leopard-print Moschino blazer with Gucci tailored pants from the 2000s, one of my silk blouses with a necktie, a pair of mad trainers and one of my good bags from the days when I used to waste money on designer handbags. … on a plane? I like to be elegant. I'll wear chinos with a chic sweatshirt, a blazer and silk scarf. My husband always wears a suit. … on the red carpet? A silk dress by Alber Elbaz for Lanvin. What's your favourite fashion era? The '90s was great for fashion. Tom Ford for Gucci was the epitome of it. That red velvet suit was a moment. Who are your favourite fashion designers? John Galliano, Alexander McQueen and Phoebe Philo. What's your fragrance of choice? Grandiflora's 'Magnolia Michel'. What are the three essential items in your wardrobe? A cashmere stole, a nylon cross-body bag and a good tuxedo jacket.

The not-so-sustainable reality of buying second-hand fashion

I pride myself on being a savvy second-hand shopper. A gently used vintage Jean Paul Gaultier blazer from a second-hand store in Taiwan; a silk Moschino scarf from a flea market in Tokyo; a novelty Kate Spade box clutch from a charity sale in Singapore – these are just a few of the treasures I have unearthed over the years at a fraction of their original prices.
