Morrisey celebrates signing of three bills at Beckley church
Gov. Patrick Morrisey ceremoniously signed three bills during an event at a Beckley, Thursday, May 29, 2025. (West Virginia Office of Gov. Patrick Morrisey | Courtesy photo) West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey on Thursday celebrated the passage of three bills he said protect and defend life 'at all stages.' Morrisey held the ceremonial bill signing for Senate Bill 537, House Bill 2123 and House Bill 2871 at CrossPoint Church in Beckley, West Virginia. 'West Virginia has a proud history defending the sanctity of life for a long, long time, and I've been very humbled to be an important part of that, serving as the first pro-life attorney general in state history,' Morrisey said. 'And before I left, we were still busy defending the state's pro-life law in the Fourth Circuit. That's still pending, and we've been working constantly to try to keep expanding the provisions to protect innocent life.' Senate Bill 537 expands the state's Mothers and Babies Pregnancy Support Program. The legislation allows the program to use state funds to cover new expenditures including new land and buildings, additional services for mothers, and staff training, Morrisey said. The Legislature also allocated $3 million for the program. 'The goal behind that money and this bill is to give organizations that help pregnant women greater flexibility in using their funds,' Morrisey said. 'What a good, noble cause.' The West Virginia Mothers and Babies Pregnancy Support Program was established by House Bill 2002, signed by former Gov. Jim Justice during the 2023 legislative session. State lawmakers passed a law making abortion illegal with narrow exceptions in September 2022 in the wake of a U.S. Supreme Court ruling striking down Roe V. Wade. The program provides funding for 'pregnancy support organizations' except those 'that performs, prescribes, refers for, encourages or promotes abortion as an option for a pregnant woman.' House Bill 2123 increases the penalties for a parents or guardians convicted of child abuse resulting in injury or neglect causing the risk of injury from one to five years in prison to two to 10 years in prison. The bill had unanimous support in both the West Virginia House of Delegates and in the Senate. 'Once again, we have to protect our most precious among us, and if you harm a child as a parent or guardian, you're going to pay a heavy price,' Morrisey said. House Bill 2871 expands the vehicular homicide offense to include aggravated vehicular homicide and clarifies that victims can include embryos and fetuses. The bill was also passed unanimously by both chambers of the Legislature. 'Now, the loss of a child in a womb, that can be considered a death for purposes of prosecution,' Morrisey said. 'That's good, and that's just common sense. A life in the womb is still a life. Our laws have to reflect that fact, and they are.' SUBSCRIBE: GET THE MORNING HEADLINES DELIVERED TO YOUR INBOX

This shaping dress looked too good to be true - so my mom and I put it to the test (spoiler: I'm buying it in every color)
As a woman in my late 20s, I'm always struggling to find a dress that's both chic, a little bit sexy, and saves me from having to suck in every time someone takes out their camera to snap my picture. I've tried countless dresses and companies, and while there are a couple staples in my wardrobe, none fit me as perfectly as the body-fitting shaping dress from Miraclesuit — yes, the viral brand known for the Miraclesuit (their shaping bathing suits). Regi Shaping Dress (Crimson Red) 15% off This gorgeous slimming dress gives you an hourglass figure and features tummy control. It's breathable, doesn't slip up, and is built for women of all ages and sizes. Right now you can snag 15 percent off your order with code MAY15. Shop It was surprising, and a little bit unbelievable at first, and so I had to have my mom try the brand as well. My lovely mother shies away from wearing anything tight-fitting as she's afraid it won't suit her frame. She was very hesitant at first, but when I told her the dress is literally made to make her feel and look confident, she decided to give it a try. A few days ago we both donned our Miraclesuit shaping dresses and wore them out and about on the town — here's what we thought. First off, this dress is surprisingly easy to put on. Shapewear is most certainly something I don't reach for often, as it's always uncomfortable, rides up, or makes me feel unbelievably warm. My mom and I both slipped on this dress with ease, even though she was very worried after taking a first look at the dress that it wouldn't fit her — spoiler alert, it fit her quite well! Miraclesuit recommends sizing down, so I bought the extra small while my mom purchased the M in the same design. Normally, I fall between an small and an medium while my mom sticks to large-sized dresses usually. The great part about the dress that we both really liked was how the built-in shapewear was comfortable and non-constricting. We could go about our walk to the winery we were visiting, spend hours sitting, use the bathroom, and never have to worry about the dress riding up. In fact, I barely adjusted my dress throughout the day. It truly is great at sculpting too. I felt confident in my dress, and could stand tall without trying to suck in. When I sat down, I had a totally flat stomach, and none of my bloating was visible post-meal. My mom felt the same, complimenting how the dress gave her an hourglass shape and lifted her chest. 'It made me feel 15 years younger. I can't remember the last time I wore a skin-tight dress,' she said. We also both loved that the dress came with a built-in bra. You might still need to wear a bra if your cup size runs high, depending on your comfort level, but I had no problem wearing the dress without a bra all day. It provided the lift and support I needed, without ever looking vulgar. That said, there is enough space to wear a bra comfortably under the dress. It was surprising, too, that it worked well for both our heights. I'm quite tall while my mom is quite petite, but the dress seemed to sit on us both equally. Since the dress is available in four colors (Crimson Red, Black, Serpiente, and Sodalite), we'll definitely want to stock up on all four colors. It's really hard to find a con with the dress. I think the only area where my mom wished there was a little more shaping was the tummy control region, primarily in the lower belly area. But apart from that, the fit really was near perfect. The good part is that even with all the shapewear built in, the dress is still washable and can also be easily spot cleaned if you have a small food stain — like I did. Just definitely make sure to size down when you buy for a snug fit. If you want something that's a little less shapewear, and a more relaxed fit, stick to your original size (though I highly recommend sizing down, as trust me, the dress never felt uncomfortable even after a full day of wear). Apart from the Regi Shaping Dress, Miraclesuit has tons of other shaping dress options, as well as their ever-popular shaping bathing suits. So if this is not the style for you, check out the brand's full selection to find your fit.

Don't Know How to Face Your Mom? Talk to Your Friend's Mom Instead.
I'm a woman who has never wanted children. For years, the person who had the hardest time accepting that was my mother. Since two of my closest friends also chose a child-free life, I came up with a small experiment: We swapped moms. Each of us sat down for an open conversation not with our own mother but with another's. In a world where the right of women to make decisions about their bodies and life choices is still questioned, where child-free women are often seen as broken or selfish, I made this film to put that experience onscreen. Filmed in Israel in 2023, 'M/other' captures a deeply personal and ongoing conversation. Maybe it will help us all be better understood.

The residents of Kruinhof Retirement Village celebrated Easter with the theme, 'Celebration of the resurrections of Jesus Christ'. The purpose of the event, which was organised on April 23 in the village and officiated by Vanessa Spassov of the Dare-To-Care soup kitchen, was to bless the elderly with Easter gifts and celebrate the spirit of the Easter weekend. Chicken cheeseburgers, chips, and a piece of cake were served to the elderly. 'These eggs were donated by a variety of people from Bedfordview, Edenvale and beyond. My son, who now lives in the UK, bought me 20 boxes. 'A soup kitchen in Primrose also gave me 20 boxes. A gentleman by the name of Gavin Fisher always buys me cakes for these events,' said Spassov. 'Too many people to mention but I did post daily appreciations on my socials to thank them all. I had to make the decision to either cancel or continue because of the rain, but because of the excitement built up over the prior weeks, I decided to continue. 'The pensioners, who receive a tiny pension monthly, were well blessed. 'I'm already planning the next few meals and fundraising by our normal monthly jumble sale which takes place in Klopper Park every first and last Saturday of the month. 'I'll continue to seek donations in the hope of blessing our pensioners just a little more. 'Dare-To-Care soup kitchen is also preparing a small Easter treat for De Wetshof Old Age Home in Kensington on Friday, April 25. We have Easter eggs and shopping bags for them,' said Spassov. Emirati Craftsmanship Shines at Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai with Live Heritage Workshops
The United Arab Emirates Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai is drawing visitors into the heart of Emirati heritage through live workshops showcasing traditional crafts, led by elite artisans from Bait Al Harifeen (House of Artisans). Now in its fourth day, the pavilion has come alive with hands-on sessions in Al Sadu weaving—focusing on the intricate Maghzal (spindle) technique—alongside Talli (braiding) and Khous (palm frond weaving). Visitors not only witness these time-honored practices but also create their own craft-inspired souvenirs, including Talli medals, miniature spindles, and Khous bookmarks. These workshops, guided by revered Emirati craftswomen known as the Mothers of the Emirates, offer an authentic experience rooted in the desert's cultural legacy. Their presence is more than a demonstration—it's a living bridge between past and future, preserving artisanal skills passed down through generations. The pavilion also features striking heritage-inspired installations crafted by Bait Al Harifeen , such as a large Al Sadu piece integrated into the Healthcare section, and a symbolic rocket model in the space exploration zone. Both works exemplify the fusion of tradition and innovation. The live heritage workshops will continue until April 19, reflecting the UAE's commitment to sharing its cultural identity in ways that are interactive, immersive, and forward-looking.
