Jose Mourinho dismisses Chelsea victory at Club World Cup

Jose Mourinho has played down the significance of Chelsea's victory at the Club World Cup this summer and insists Paris Saint-Germain were the 'big winner' last season. Chelsea pulled off an upset in the Club World Cup final earlier this month as Enzo Maresca's side ran out 3-0 winners against PSG. En route to the final, Chelsea beat Benfica, Palmeiras and Fluminense in the knockout stage before their victory over the Champions League holders. And Mourinho, who now manages Fenerbahce, has likened Club World Cup games to pre-season friendlies. 'This Club World Cup also highlighted a kid who also had a great season at Chelsea, Cole Palmer,' Mourinho said in an interview with Canal 11. 'But this run to the semi-finals reminded me every time I went to the United States for pre-season with Real Madrid and Inter, it reminded me a little of those games we played there. 'So, I think this Club World Cup title is only important for Chelsea, as they'll sell a lot of jerseys with the logo on there. More Trending 'So, I think PSG was the big winner this season, not because of what they did domestically, because they always win domestically, but winning the Champions League and the way they did, especially with the idea of losing their best player. 'It reminds me of when I won at Inter, when Ibrahimovic had left for Barcelona and we were the ones who won. 'I think this PSG team is the best team of the season, and these Portuguese players [Vitinha, Joao Neves, Nuno Mendes]… Gonçalo Ramos played less, despite often being decisive. I love them both [Vitinha and Joao Neves], I can't tell the difference. 'The only thing I'd say is that there's still a small group of good midfielders there, and now full-backs like that… I'd like one of them to win [the Ballon d'Or], obviously, but then Jorge Mendes will get mad at me because he only thinks [Lamine] Yamal, his player, should win!.' Jose Mourinho points finger at Sir Jim Ratcliffe as he gives brutal Man Utd verdict

Manchester United suffered their worst ever Premier League campaign in 2024-25 as they finished 15 and former coach Jose Mourinho has pointed the finger of blame at chief Sir Jim Ratcliffe Former Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has taken aim at Sir Jim Ratcliffe, claiming he "doesn't have much experience in football" and insisting "a lot needs to change" at Old Trafford. ‌ United are still reeling from a turbulent season that saw them finish 15th in the Premier League table, their worst campaign in top flight history, as Ruben Amorim was unable to steady the ship after Erik ten Hag was sacked last year. The Red Devils lost a total of 18 games and they were also beaten 1-0 by Tottenham in the Europa League final, missing out on a final chance to claim Champions League football. ‌ Mourinho has experience of managing United during a difficult period after he was sacked in 2018 after picking up just 26 points from 17 games in the 2018-19 season. ‌ The 'Special One' did win two major trophies at United and also finished second in 2017-18 and suggests Ratcliffe's lack of footballing experience might hinder the club - in a subtle jab at the billionaire and the United hierarchy. Speaking to Portuguese outlet Record, he said: "Today, I think that with the change in ownership at the club, with an owner who doesn't have much experience in football but rather in sport... "What happened to Ruben, from being the manager of the worst Manchester United in Premier League history to having continuity and confidence to continue and be Ruben Amorim, is a sign that a lot needs to change." However, Mourinho believes current boss Amorim has "incredible potential" to be a success at Old Trafford and urged the club to keep backing him - and to allow him to do his work as he sees fit. "With that stability... We all agree that he's a manager with great potential and personality. I think he has incredible potential to do great work." ‌ Mourinho is now at Turkish club Fenerbahce, where he is hoping to win his first major since joining them last summer as he approaches his second season. Since leaving United, Mourinho had an unsuccessful spell at Tottenham, where he was sacked just days before the 2021 Carabao Cup final against Manchester City. He later won the UEFA Conference League with Roma before also being sacked by the Italian side last year. Amorim will be hoping for a much better second season with United as he prepares for a pre-season tour of the United States - where they will play West Ham, Bournemouth and Everton in the Premier League Summer Series. United have already made two high profile signings as they look to bounce back from their dreadful first campaign under Amorim after snapping up forwards Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.

Jose Mourinho sends warning to Arsenal over Viktor Gyokeres transfer

Jose Mourinho has suggested Viktor Gyokeres could struggle at Arsenal against 'stronger teams and better players' after hitting out at the 'lies' that surrounded one of the biggest transfer sagas of the summer. The Gunners are finally set to sign the Sweden international having agreed a deal worth €63.5million (£54.8m), plus €10m (£8.6m) in add-ons agreed earlier this month. The specific structure of those add-ons delayed proceedings but the move is now firmly back on track with confirmation imminent. Arsenal's need for a centre forward has been well-documented for a number of seasons with belief a prolific finisher up front can finally get them over the line in the Premier League and Champions League. Gyokeres arrives with a ruthless record in front of goal having scored 54 goals in 52 appearances last season. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link we'll send you so we can get football news tailored to you. While rating the Swede as a 'great player', former Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham boss Mourinho believes he now faces a much sterner test in the Premier League. In a wide-ranging interview with Portugal's Channel 11, Mourinho noted at Sporting, Gyokeres had a team build to play around him under Ruben Amorim and his successor Rui Borges who 'adapted' the team to the striker's needs. 'He's a great player. I have no doubt,' Mourinho said. 'But Sporting had a way of playing very much around him, very adapted. I don't know what Hugo Viana and Ruben [Amorim] initially thought; he's a player with great potential. 'But in England, he'll play against stronger teams, better players. While Gyokeres has only had eyes for Arsenal, the 26-year-old has been strongly linked to a number of clubs. Manchester United have persistently been credited with interest along with Juventus, clubs in Saudi Arabia and even Mourinho's own Fenerbahce. A battle between Sporting, Gyokeres and his agent Hasan Cetinkaya was also fought out in the Portuguese media with the club accused of failing to deliver on transfer promises made last year. More Trending The end result was Gyokeres refusing to return for pre-season training with legal action also threatened during the bitter stand-off. Having watched it unfold from afar, Mourinho hit out a the 'lies' that became part of the transfer story, describing it as a 'war'. 'Unfortunately, of the 3,400 lies that have been told about the transfer market, one of them is that he's going to Fenerbahçe,' Mourinho said. 'Unfortunately… So many lies, so much interest, so many people working for agents, for clubs… It's a war that's not my own.' Jose Mourinho has return in mind and teases Cristiano Ronaldo reunion after bust-up

Jose Mourinho and Cristiano Ronaldo had a difficult relationship at times when the duo were at Real Madrid, but a reunion could be on the cards if manager's latest comments are anything to go by Jose Mourinho has said that he is ready to return to management in his native Portugal. The ex- Manchester United boss even hinted that he was eyeing a role with the national team once again, with a potentially awkward reunion with Cristiano Ronaldo on the cards should he make the jump to international coaching. ‌ Mourinho, 62, is currently at the helm of Turkish giants Fenerbahce after taking over in June 2024. However, after leading his side to a 2-1 victory over Portuguese second division side Portimonense in a pre-season friendly last week, Mourinho dropped the bombshell that he is ready to make a return to the country where it all began for him. ‌ Mourinho has not coached in Portugal since 2004, where he had spells with with Benfica and Porto. "I will come back to Portugal for sure. It hasn't happened yet, but it will happen," Mourinho told Sport TV last week. ‌ "Not because I feel close to the end, I feel far from that. I don't want to come to Portugal for a golden retirement or for my final years in my career." He continued: "I want to come to Portugal at the peak of my career, in good health and in top physical and mental shape. I will definitely return. Club or national team? Either, but not Portimonense, because they already have a good manager (laughs)." Rumours of discord between Mourinho, who was sacked by United in 2018, and Ronaldo were rife when the legendary coach managed the five-time Ballon d'Or winner at Real Madrid for three seasons. If Mourinho decides to take over the reins of his country it could have wider implications with Ronaldo still very much a focal point for the team, currently managed by Roberto Martinez. ‌ Mourinho and Ronaldo's relationship was fraught in the Spanish capital, with the Portuguese tactician often slamming his star player for what he perceived was a lack of tactical discipline. According to Guillem Balague's book, Cristiano Ronaldo: The Biography, Mourinho once engaged Ronaldo in a huge row after the forward took a throw-in too quickly. "After everything I've done for you, this is how you treat me? How dare you say that to me", Mourinho reportedly bellowed at Ronaldo. "I was saying it for the team because the team needed you to track back." ‌ Tensions worsened as Mourinho supposedly added: "Just so you know, many think like me here, but don't dare say it, they don't have the balls to tell you." It is then believed the pair had to be separated. Despite their difficulties, time heals all wounds and it seems that applies to the iconic compatriots. Speaking later on, and perhaps offering an insight into how he would coach a 40-year-old Ronaldo for the national team, Mourinho said: "I think you don't coach [him]. "Motivation, you don't need to give him. Ambition, you don't need to give him. Technique, you don't need to give him. You give some tactical adjustments and let the guy be happy." ‌ The two-time Champions League-winning boss was also happy to brand Ronaldo as one of "the best players of all time" and insisted that coaching him was "the highlight" of his career. He also moved to distinguish any bad blood too, saying: "A coach and a player may have their differences at a given time, but it ends there." Since leaving Porto in 2004, Mourinho has managed Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Tottenham and Roma. Ronaldo, clearly impressed by his old bosses' CV, has claimed that he would be open to working with Mourinho again. Sensationally, Al-Nassr star Ronaldo even lauded Mourinho as the best coach he has ever worked with – even above Sir Alex Ferguson. "I would put him at the top, I always say that," Ronaldo said. A dream reunification in the offing or just two of the game's biggest egos on a collision course once again? Only time will tell as all eyes will firmly be on Mourinho's next move.

Mixed reports on Calhanoglu replacement as Mourinho wants Inter star

Several sources confirm that José Mourinho's Fenerbahçe are interested in Hakan Calhanoglu, but there are mixed reports on the possible replacements at San Siro, with Italian sports papers mentioning Granit Xhaka and Morten Frendrup as the Nerazzurri's priorities. Mourinho's Fenerbahce have emerged as the latest club interested in Calhanoglu. Gazzetta claims Xhaka is Inter's priority to replace Calhanoglu The Turkey international has a €30m price tag and has already attracted interest from Fenerbahce's domestic rivals, Galatasaray. Inter haven't yet received formal offers for Calhanoglu but are already considering potential replacements, just in case one of the interested clubs matches their demands. According to Gazzetta, Bayer Leverkusen star Xhaka is Cristian Chivu's priority target if Calhanoglu leaves. The Swiss international has also been linked with Juventus and Milan. CorSport: Inter turn to Frendrup if Calhanoglu leaves Gazzetta reports that Xhaka is not the only target in central midfield, but is surely Chivu's favourite. On the other hand, Corriere dello Sport wrote on its Sunday front page that Genoa's Frendrup is the leading Inter target to replace Calhanoglu, should the Turkish star leave. Atalanta's Ederson was also mentioned as one of the players on Inter's agenda earlier this month, but the Brazilian has a €50m price tag, and the Serie A giants are also in talks for his teammate Ademola Lookman.
