Microsoft Gets Out of the Movie and TV Business: How to Save Everything You Bought
After almost two decades, Microsoft is finally exiting the movie and TV distribution business. Going forward, Microsoft will no longer offer new movies or TV shows for purchase on the Microsoft Store on Windows, or the Microsoft Store on Xbox. Users are not eligible for refunds on content they've already bought, with Microsoft pointing to the Microsoft Store's Terms of Sale. However, you can continue to access content you've previously purchased in the Movies & TV app on your Xbox or Windows devices. Microsoft also says it will continue providing tech support for any film and TV content you've already purchased through its official stores. The good news is that if you're in the US, you can sign up for the Movies Anywhere platform to connect your Microsoft-purchased movies with other Movies Anywhere retailers, including iTunes, Amazon Prime Video, Fandango at Home, Google Play, YouTube, Vudu, and Comcast's Xfinity. Launched in 2014, Movies Anywhere is a cloud-based digital rights locker and streaming platform that allows users to stream, download and store movies they've purchased elsewhere. Microsoft didn't provide any details about what motivated its decision to shut down the storefront, but the move shouldn't come as a huge surprise. Though it remains an unavoidable player in the world of video games, Microsoft has already shut down most of its platforms providing traditional media content. Microsoft Groove, which started life as Zune Music, was discontinued in 2017 after struggling to compete with rivals like Spotify, Google Play Music, and Apple's iTunes. If you're interested in moving your media library to Movies Anywhere, head to its website or open the Movies Anywhere app, available on the App Store or Google Play. In the mobile app, tap your profile picture, then tap the Settings (gear) icon. If you're using the website, click the arrow next to your profile name and select Settings. Then choose Manage Retailers, and tap Connect next to the digital retailer you want to link. You'll be directed to Microsoft to complete the process—just follow the on-screen instructions to connect your accounts. Once you're done, return to Movies Anywhere to confirm that your accounts are connected. Unfortunately, it's important to note that not all major streaming platforms are integrated with Movies Anywhere. If your preferred platform is Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Max, Paramount+, or Peacock, you might have to settle for your second choice when exporting your Microsoft library.

Microsoft Shuts Down Movies and TV Store, Keeps Access for Existing Buyers
In an unexpected move, Microsoft has closed its Movies and TV store on Xbox consoles and Windows PCs, cutting off any new purchases of films or shows through its platform. While you won't be able to buy fresh content anymore, Microsoft says you can still access whatever you've already purchased. 'Downloads will continue to be available on Windows and in HD max resolution,' says Microsoft. However, there's a catch — you'll need to keep using the Movies & TV app on your Xbox or Windows device to watch your library, unless your films are part of the Movies Anywhere program in the US. Also, Microsoft has confirmed that it won't be offering refunds for any existing purchases. This move doesn't come as a complete shock to loyal users. Many have wondered about the store's future ever since Microsoft discontinued Groove Music in 2017. The journey of Microsoft's video storefront began in 2006 with the Zune Video Marketplace, evolved into Xbox Video in 2012, and eventually became the Movies & TV app and store in 2015. Now, nearly a decade later, it's officially winding down.

Microsoft will no longer sell movies or TV shows on PCs or Xbox — what happens to the stuff you bought
More than a decade after introducing a way to let your rent or buy movies and shows through your PC or Xbox, Microsoft is killing the Movies & TV storefront in the Microsoft Store. The ending was confirmed in a new Microsoft support page (spotted by Windows Central) that was published today (July 18). "Microsoft no longer offers new entertainment content for purchase, including movies and TV shows, on Microsoft Store on Windows, and the Microsoft Store on Xbox," the page reads. If you try to access media using the entertainment app on the Microsoft Store, you'll now see an alert that reads, "Microsoft will no longer be making movies and TV content available for purchase." The button that let you buy movies or TV shows has been deleted. In the FAQ on the page, Microsoft does say that any previously purchased content will still be accessible via the Movies & TV app, which you can still download from the Microsoft Store. "You can continue to enjoy your previously purchased movies and TV shows using the Microsoft Movies & TV app on your Xbox or Windows device," says Microsoft. For any new media, the company suggests streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. It's an ignoble end for a service that has existed since 2012, originally dubbed Xbox Video. Then again, the move isn't a surprise considering Microsoft's ongoing slow exit from entertainment avenues that don't involve gaming. As mentioned, Microsoft says you can access your purchases in the Movies & TV app, which isn't going away. For U.S. customers, there is a service called Movies Anywhere that you can use to sync your media to other services that also support Movies Anywhere. Basically, it acts as a way for you to contain your collection while being able to stream it most anywhere that lets you get the Movies Anywhere app. Often many physical DVDs and Blu-Rays released these days have a code for Movies Anywhere that you can use to add films to your collection. If you don't trust Microsoft to keep the Movies & TV app running, might we suggest building your own home media server or return to buying physical media. At this point it might even be cheaper than streaming.

Microsoft shut its movies store 19 years after its launch
Microsoft has reportedly closed its Movies and TV store on both Xbox consoles and Windows PCs, effective today (July 18). According to a report, users can no longer purchase new movies or TV shows but they can access previously bought content for playback on their devices. The Verge reports that Microsoft confirmed that downloads will continue to be available on Windows, in up to HD resolution. However, users must continue to use the dedicated Movies & TV app on Windows or Xbox to play the content they own. Notably, the only exception for accessing content on other services is for purchases made in the US that are part of the Movies Anywhere platform. Microsoft is not offering refunds for past purchases. The company has also stated it will continue to provide support for any playback issues with previously purchased content. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it legal? That service then evolved into Xbox Video in 2012, transforming into the Movies & TV app and store in 2015. The Verge claims that the closure of Microsoft's movie and TV storefront wasn't entirely unexpected by Xbox and Windows users, especially after the company shut down its Groove Music service in 2017. Meanwhile, YouTube has gained market share in terms of watch time of TV in the US. A recent Nielsen report claimed that YouTube and Netflix together captured 20% of all US television viewing time in May. However, the Google-owned service logged more market share – 12.5% – compared to Netflix's 7.5%. Their closest streaming rival, Disney, with its combined services Disney+, Hulu, ESPN+), accounted for 5% of TV time during the same period. AI Masterclass for Students. Xbox Is Done Selling Movies And TV Shows
12 years after Xbox introduced the Xbox One as a console that would be your entertainment media hub, Xbox is no longer selling TV shows or movies. The news came with little fanfare or notice, though some people who regularly check Xbox's movie and TV section saw a bunch of movies about the end of the world in the featured section right before it all shut down. On July 18, Xbox posted an FAQ quietly confirming that it was done selling movies and TV episodes on its digital storefront, available on PC and console. 'Microsoft has stopped selling new movie and TV content,' said Xbox bluntly in the new FAQ. Microsoft says that anyone who has already bought a movie or TV show through the Xbox store will still have access and be able to watch purchased content on their Xbox consoles or PC. The company also confirmed that it will continue to support MoviesAnywhere in the United States, so any movies you own via Xbox should continue to be available via any platform that supports the movie sharing service. While in 2025 it isn't shocking that Xbox has backed out of selling movies and TV shows, as most people stream stuff or use more popular apps to buy new movies, it is still wild to think about how not that long ago, Xbox was super committed to turning its console into an entertainment hub. Infamously, when Xbox showed off the Xbox One in 2012 for the first time, it spent a good portion of the event talking about TV and movies. Now, that's all gone. End of an era. Some people saw this coming a few days ago when they noticed a strange collection of movies was in the featured section of the Xbox store. This Is the End End of Days Marvel Studios' Avengers: Endgame Marked For Death The Last Stand The World's End Seeking a Friend for the End of the World I Am Legend 'It certainly looks like this is the end,' posted one user earlier this week after seeing the featured movies. 'Hopefully, we'll at least have access to our digital purchases for a long time.' . For the latest news, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Solve the daily Crossword
