Vigilance to record statements of new complainants in ED bribery case in Kerala
VACB has so far arrested Wilson, Mukesh Jain—a Rajasthan native based in Kochi—and chartered accountant Renjith Warrier in connection with the case. ED assistant director Shekar Kumar is named as the first accused. 'All of them were approached by Wilson, who allegedly demanded bribes to halt ED investigations against them. We are currently probing whether the ED officer has any direct connection with the arrested individuals. Any action against the officer will only be taken based on solid evidence. The investigation is now at a crucial stage,' the official said. The three arrested individuals will remain in VACB custody till Thursday. A team led by VACB SP S Sasidharan, along with two DySPs, is handling the interrogation. The ED officer will be questioned later. 'The officer's statement is necessary as he is an accused in the case. However, it will be recorded only after we complete evidence collection and obtain maximum information from the other accused individuals,' the VACB officer said. Meanwhile, the ED has denied any connection to the bribery case, claiming it is part of a conspiracy by the complainant to derail the probe against him under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

VACB arrests two on charge of duping businessman of ₹2 crore
The Ernakulam Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) arrested two persons on charge of attempting to cheat a Kollam-based businessman by demanding ₹2 crore for getting him off the radar of the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The arrested are Wilson of Thammanam and Mukesh Jain aka Murali from Rajasthan. Wilson was arrested while accepting ₹2 lakh from the businessman at Panamppilly Nagar. Mukesh was arrested based on information elicited from Wilson. 'Mukesh Jain is suspected to have hawala links. He was the one who arranged bank accounts outside Kerala in which the businessman was asked to deposit ₹2 crore in four lots of ₹50 lakh each,' said VACB sources. The businessman, who was into exporting cashew to an African nation, reportedly hit hard times during the pandemic when he claimed to have been cheated by an African native. Shortly, the ED launched an inquiry, and he was summoned for interrogation. However, it is not known whether the ED has registered a case against him. 'It was at that point that Wilson contacted him and offered to take him off the ED's radar. He was asked to wire ₹2 crore to different bank accounts outside the State. Later, Wilson asked him for ₹2 lakh in liquid cash,' said the VACB sources. It was then that the businessman approached the VACB. Initially, at the instance of the enforcement agency, he deposited ₹50,000 instead of ₹2 lakh in an account to track it whenever it was withdrawn. However, it was never withdrawn, and Wilson demanded to be paid in cash. The accused were booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act Section 7A (attempt to influence a public servant, either directly or indirectly, by offering or accepting undue advantages to induce improper or dishonest performance of a public duty) and the Bharatiya Nyaya Section 61(2) (criminal conspiracy). The accused were produced in court and remanded in judicial custody.

City jewellers offers affordable choices, say lightweight jewellery in demand
1 2 3 4 5 6 Patna: Despite high prices of gold, city jewellers are expecting a good sale on Akshaya Tritiya — one of the auspicious gold-buying days after Dhanteras. Jewellers are enhancing their marketing efforts by offering lucrative deals, discounts and affordable choices to boost sales. They have also launched their new collections for the festival. Many customers have already placed advance bookings for gold, silver, and diamond jewellery at city-based shops to avoid crowding during the festival. The traditional belief holds that purchasing precious metals on this day brings good fortune and abundance. This significant day, devoted to Goddess Lakshmi, falls on the third lunar day (Shukla Paksha) of Vaisakha month as per the Hindu calendar. The celebration is scheduled for April 30. Mukesh Jain, store manager of a branded jewellery showroom at Frazer Road, said, "Our 'Maithili Collection' has just arrived and is in high demand. This new collection is lightweight and specifically designed for Bihar. As the name suggests, it is inspired by Madhubani art. The lightweight jewellery with a heavy look is particularly popular. It is part of this festive campaign, making it highly sought after this wedding season." "Apart from that, we have the Navani collection. In the Mangalsutra collection, we have the 'Door' and 'Kalahi' collections in bangles. In diamonds, there is the 'Red-carpet' collection. We are offering a 20% discount on making charges of gold, plus an additional discount of Rs 101 per gram," Jain told this newspaper on Monday. Pranay Kumar Mazumdar, manager of a jewellery showroom, said the lightweight segment of diamond jewellery, which can be used daily and for parties, is more in demand. "So far, the booking of jewellery is overwhelming. We are offering discounts and offers on gold and diamond, up to 50% off on making charges of diamond jewellery, and an additional discount of up to 20% on diamonds. Besides, up to 50% off on making charges of gold jewellery," he said. "On average, we are getting 10-15 bookings. We are offering a 35% discount on the making charges of gold jewellery and a 25% discount on the diamond value till the festival," said Deepak Kumar, manager of a jewellery shop at Kadamkuan, adding that most of the customers are purchasing antique collections and lightweight jewellery. Binod Kumar, gold trader and president of Patliputra Sarafa Sangh, speculated that due to the rise in the price of gold and diamond, the sale would be lower than the previous year in terms of weight but not in monetary value. "People are buying lightweight jewellery for the festival due to rise in gold prices . Gold not only provides a good return, but also serves as an option for people to gift their families, which can be beneficial in the future." he said.
