No mercy for people who spread the curse of drugs in Punjab: Bhagwant Mann
Agency: Malerkotla (PB), Jul 18 (PTI) Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday said that no mercy will be shown to people who had spread the curse of drugs in the state. Speaking after inaugurating new tehsil complexes at Ahmedgarh and Amargarh, he said that the 'Drug Jarnails who were once considered invincible have now been put behind the bars." The resounding success of the ongoing Yudh Nashian Virudh is a testimony that the people stand with the state government in its war against drugs, an official statement quoted Mann as saying. The chief minister claimed that the Congress and Akalis were divided houses as their leaders squabble for power. 'These power hungry politicians can't survive without it. They are getting restless as people have ousted them to opt the Aam Aadmi Party," he said. Mann said the state government will take several pro-people decisions in the coming days and ensure that youth become job-givers instead of job-seekers. He said Punjab is the sacred land of great Gurus, saints and seers who preached love, harmony and tolerance. However, some 'anti-Punjab forces" have been trying to destroy this fabric of unity by orchestrating sacrilegious acts against holy scriptures since 2016, Mann said, reiterating his government's resolve to ensure exemplary punishment for such culprits. He also highlighted the key public welfare initiatives of the state government, including the recent Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana under which cashless medical treatment worth up to Rs 10 lakh will be extended to every family in Punjab. Mann said that Punjab has set a benchmark by providing government jobs to more than 55,000 youths in the last three years. 'The transparent recruitment has increased their faith in the state government. So the youths are shunning the idea of moving abroad and instead prepare for government jobs," he said. Private hospitals sceptical of Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana; fear delays, low rates; call it poll-driven by Punjab govt
AMRITSAR: The much-publicised Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana, which promises free medical treatment worth up to Rs 10 lakh at government and empanelled private hospitals, has not been well received by private healthcare providers. Drawing from past experiences, many remain sceptical about the scheme's success, especially if the government fails to ensure timely reimbursements or make the programme financially viable. A day after the scheme's launch, The Times of India spoke to a cross-section of private healthcare providers. Many expressed hesitation, stating they are waiting for more clarity before deciding on empanelment. 'There were two earlier schemes that had to be discontinued due to reimbursement delays and unviable rates for most procedures,' said Dr Avtar Singh of Amandeep Medicity. He added that even the Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY Mukh Mantri Sehat Bima Yojana seems to be following a similar path. Aam Aadmi Party National Convener Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann launched the scheme in Chandigarh on Tuesday, promising that every Punjabi family would be entitled to free and cashless medical treatment up to ₹10 lakh per year at both government and private hospitals. Citing an example, Dr Avtar said the treatment cost for a fracture was fixed at ₹9,500 — a figure that makes the procedure financially unsustainable. He added that co-payments (the patient's share of treatment costs) were not allowed, further complicating matters. Dr Manik Mahajan of Mahajan Hospital, Batala, said earlier government health schemes offered treatment rates too low for private hospitals to maintain quality care. He noted that in many cases, reimbursements were delayed by over a year. However, he expressed hope that the Punjab government has addressed these issues before rolling out the new scheme. Dr Ravijit Singh of Dr Daljit Singh Eye Hospital said the success of the scheme would depend on the groundwork laid by the government and the quality of support given to both patients and private hospitals. Based on his past experience, he said insurance approvals were often denied or delayed due to inefficiencies by the Third Party Administrator (TPA) — the agency responsible for coordinating between the hospitals and government. Several private hospital owners, speaking anonymously, said they were previously empanelled under similar schemes due to what they described as 'administrative or political pressure', which resulted in financial losses. 'In one such scheme, my hospital lost ₹6 lakh from just six patients,' one owner said, adding that at times, government hospitals referred patients to private hospitals without proper coordination or payment. There is also growing concern among private healthcare stakeholders that the new scheme is being pushed more for political mileage ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections than for genuinely improving public healthcare in the state.

Punjab CM announces ₹10-lakh universal health cover for every family
The Punjab government on Tuesday launched the 'Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana', a universal health cover promising free and cashless medical treatment up to ₹10 lakh per year for every family of the state, irrespective of income. The scheme was formally launched by chief minister Bhagwant Mann and AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal at a public event in Sector 35, Chandigarh. (Sanjeev Sharma/HT) The scheme was formally launched by chief minister Bhagwant Mann and AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal at a public event in Sector 35, Chandigarh. Addressing the gathering during the launch, Kejriwal said starting today, the entire population of 3 crore in the state will be eligible for free treatment under this scheme. The scheme will be operational from October 2 after which camps will be organised to enrol people. Kejriwal said earlier, a family could avail of treatment only up to ₹5 lakh, but now this limit had been increased to ₹10 lakh. He said every citizen of Punjab will be entitled to free healthcare, whether they were government employees or pensioners, with no income limit. 'Previously, only eligible families could benefit from treatment up to ₹5 lakh, but now, all citizens are covered,' he assured. Health cards under this scheme can be made at Seva Kendras or Common Service Centres (CSCs). In addition, these can also be obtained through online registration using an Aadhaar card or voter ID. He said with the launch of this scheme, Punjab had set a new example for the rest of the country: 'Punjab is now the first state in India to provide its citizens free healthcare, education, electricity and bus travel.' Kejriwal said acting on the message of 'Sarbat da Bhala (welfare of all)' given by the great Gurus, the Punjab government had taken steps for the well-being of all sections of society. He said under this scheme, any citizen can avail free treatment at any government hospital or empanelled private hospital, adding that now, no citizen of Punjab will have to forgo treatment due to financial constraints. Kejriwal said this work being done today should have been done 50 years ago, but unfortunately it was never on the agenda of those who ruled the country. He said due to this only, the AAP had always focused on providing quality health and education services to people so that they can excel in life. He said those who claim to make the country 'Vishavguru' had hitherto denied the country these facilities due to which the country had lagged behind. Citing examples of countries like Singapore, Japan, Germany and others, Kejriwal said they excelled because these countries had focused on these issues. He said the work being done by AAP these days was the real work of nation building. Giving an example, Kejriwal said due to strenuous efforts of the state government Punjab today was number 1 in the National Achievement Survey in Education, whereas it was on 17th rank in 2017. Kejriwal said due to the concerted efforts of the state government, Punjab today was excelling in every sphere whether it was education, health or development. He said the state government had opened 881 Aam Aadmi Clinics in the state that were providing free treatment to all, adding that 200 more such clinics will be dedicated soon. He congratulated the people on this red-letter day and said only an honest government will bother for the well-being of the common man. Kejriwal said the state government had not levied any fresh tax on people, but checked the pilferage of public money, which was being spent on development and welfare of people.
