Man convicted of careless driving and possession of cocaine has turned his life around, court hears
A van driver who was stopped because he was driving in a careless manner and admitted to possession of cannabis and cocaine has been drug-free for more than a year, the district court was told. Detective Garda Brendan McGarry told Mallow District Court that Kevin Mullins, aged 30, of Evanwood, Castletroy, Co Limerick, was the driver of a white Renault Master van that was observed driving at Newberry near Mallow on August 26, 2023. Det McGarry said the van was going around bends too quickly, causing it to sway on its rear suspension. Det McGarry said while Mullins' driving 'wasn't great', road conditions were good on what was a warm summer's evening at 6.30pm. He conceded the accused's driving was at the 'lower end' of the criteria for dangerous driving, and could reasonably be considered as careless driving. The court was told Mullins would offer a plea of guilty to the lesser charge of careless driving, and was also pleading guilty to possession of small amounts of cannabis on two occasions and cocaine on one occasion at Holycross, Charleville, Co Cork, on November 17, 2023. The court heard Mullins had 18 previous convictions, and had been disqualified from driving since the incident in question for drug-driving. Defence solicitor Cathal Lombard said his client had been fully co-operative at all times and had subsequently been in prison. He said Mullins had gone through a traumatic period in his life where a 'number of serious illnesses' had affected those close to him. He said Mullins had been drug-free for over a year, was engaging with addiction services and the probation service and had been in employment. He said Mullins had also completed a pro-social driving course. Judge Colm Roberts said: 'I hope you are the person your solicitor says you have become', and agreed to reduce the dangerous-driving charge to one of careless-driving. He convicted Mullins of that offence, disqualifying him from driving for one year and imposing a fine of €250, with one month to pay. For possession of cocaine, he was sentenced to three months in prison, suspended for one year, and placed under probation service supervision for six months. The two charges of possession of cannabis were taken into consideration. This article is funded by the Courts Reporting Scheme

Mets Tabbed 'Best Landing Spot' In Trade For $8.7 Million Slugger
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The New York Mets are one of the best teams in baseball this year, but they still need to make some upgrades to their roster. While the first half was great in Queens, the Mets got crushed by the Cincinnati Reds to start the second half on Friday. In the coming weeks, it should be expected that the Mets will be active on the trade market. Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter recently suggested the Mets were the "best landing spot" in a trade for Baltimore Orioles outfielder Cedric Mullins in the coming weeks. TAMPA, FLORIDA - JULY 18: Cedric Mullins #31 of the Baltimore Orioles dives for a ball in the first inning during a game against the Tampa Bay Rays at George M. Steinbrenner Field on July... TAMPA, FLORIDA - JULY 18: Cedric Mullins #31 of the Baltimore Orioles dives for a ball in the first inning during a game against the Tampa Bay Rays at George M. Steinbrenner Field on July 18, 2025 in Tampa, Florida. More"Mullins continues to be a solid source of power and speed, and he has a 101 OPS+ with 13 home runs, 41 RBI, and 13 steals in 312 plate appearances," Reuter wrote. "His defensive metrics (-16 DRS) are poor, which has undercut his offensive value, though he has been a quality defender in center field in the past. "The Mets have given 273 plate appearances to Tyrone Taylor this season, and he is hitting .213/.267/.313 for a 68 OPS+, so finding an upgrade in the outfield should be a priority. Mullins would allow Jeff McNeil to shift back to second base, leaving Brett Baty and Ronny Mauricio to split time at the hot corner." Mullins seemed like quite an enticing trade option earlier in the season, but he hasn't been very impressive recently. He has a slightly above-average bat, but it doesn't make up for his horrendous defense in the outfield. The veteran is on an expiring contract, so the Mets wouldn't be tied into much if they acquired him. The only reason this trade would make sense is that the Mets could likely acquire him for very little prospect capital. Mullins likely wouldn't require a top-20 prospect in the Mets' system, so New York could part ways with one or two lower-level talents to take a shot on the struggling veteran. Memphis area to be under heat advisory. What to know about forecast, heat exhaustion
Heat index values are expected to approach or top 105 degrees Fahrenheit across the Mid-South for several days starting July 16, and the National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory starting at 11 a.m. The NWS forecasted a heat index above 100 every day from July 16-22, and the city could face a heat index of 110 degrees on July 17. More than 700 people die from extreme heat every year in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The elderly, the very young and people with chronic diseases, especially chronic respiratory diseases, are especially at risk for heat stroke, Dr. Jeff Mullins, a physician with Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare, previously told The Commercial Appeal. But anyone can have a heat-related injury during periods of sustained high temperatures. Here's what you need to know as extreme heat hits the region. How can I stay safe in the heat? One of the best things you can do to avoid heat stroke is 'simply not be out in the sun in the middle of the day,' Mullins said. He also recommended doing any yard work when it's cloudy or when the sun is going down to avoid direct sunlight. Additionally, Mullins recommended hydrating far in advance of any outdoor activities. For example, if you're planning on doing yard work on the weekend, make sure you're hydrating on Friday night. The NWS recommended taking frequent breaks in the shade, wearing lightweight, light-colored and loose-fitting clothing and avoiding strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day. Mullins advised taking a break in the shade for every hour you're outside. He cautioned against taking breaks indoors ― cooling off indoors puts stress on your body to reacclimate to the heat when you go back outdoors. It's also helpful to drink electrolytes, he said. He recommended alternating a drink like Pedialyte for every bottle of water. If Gatorade is your electrolyte of choice, you should drink it every third bottle, because its high sugar content can be dehydrating, Mullins said. How hot is too hot to be outside? A healthy adult should delay outdoor activities if the heat index breaks 110, Mullins said. It could take a healthy person a few hours to become dehydrated, but for children or the elderly, it can be as short as 30 minutes, he said. Heat index is not the same as temperature ― it's calculated with both temperature and humidity. More water vapor in the air causes more heat to be transferred to your body, he said. Mullins recommended using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Heat and Health tracker, an online tool that allows you to enter your zip code and see your heat risk. The NWS also warned never to leave children or pets unattended in vehicles during high heat. What is the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke? The most common heat-related injuries are heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Heat exhaustion occurs when a person has been exposed to too much heat and is dehydrated. Heat exhaustion is not necessarily a crisis, Mullins said, but it can trigger other health issues like a heart attack or a stroke. However, heat stroke is a medical emergency. The treatment is ice, hydration and rest, Mullins said. It's important to watch for the warning signs of heat injuries. Lightheadedness is probably one of the first things a young person will notice. If you feel lightheaded after bending down, it's time to take a break, he said. Dry skin, confusion, loss of consciousness, seizures and high body temperatures are also symptoms of heat stroke, according to the CDC. 'If you find someone that has passed out in the heat…you need to assume heat stroke,' Mullins said. 'Don't worry about whether they look like they're sweating or not, or how they feel when they wake up. If they've passed out, that's a 911 to the emergency room.' Brighton exit confirmed for one Ireland international, but not who you think
Wycombe Wanderers have snapped up Ireland Under-21 midfielder Jamie Mullins on a permanent transfer from Brighton. Mullins, who played for the Seagulls last weekend in a 6-1 friendly win against his new club, has been at Brighton since his January 2023 move from Bohemians. The 20-year-old made 46 Premier League 2 appearances and could feature in Tuesday evening's friendly for Wycombe against Sutton United. Mullins followed the same path as Evan Ferguson by moving from League of Ireland side Bohs, where he made over 30 first-team appearances, to Brighton. Wycombe head coach Mike Dodds said: 'Jamie's got a really bright future ahead of him in the game and we're excited to bring him to Wycombe to develop his career and add another option for us in midfield. 'He was playing senior football as a teenager over in Ireland and has kicked on again in Brighton's academy, so he's well placed to come here and challenge for first-team football.' Brighton's technical director David Weir paid tribute to the midfielder, saying: 'Jamie has been an excellent professional during his time in our academy, which reflects in the fact he was captain of the under-21s last season. 'We wish him the best of luck for the future.' Get the latest sports headlines straight to your inbox by signing up for free email .

Alpha can capture opening day glory at Killarney
Irish previews Alpha Capture has a style of running which always demands a little luck in running and while the Willie Mullins-trained five-year-old is running at a track with similar demands, he makes plenty of appeal in the TXODDS Handicap, the fourth race on the opening day of Killarney's five-day July festival. An ex-Willie Haggas-trained gelding, he made a promising start for Mullins, winning once for new connections, at this venue, from just four outings, and being a shade unlucky on another. Early last month, he made his first start in ten 10 months and once again he could be counted as unlucky as he ran into a cul-de-sac before getting out and flying home to finish a close second to Tachos. That run ought to have brought him forward quite a bit and, given his style of running, with no great concern about the high draw, he can take this en route to a likely run or two at Galway's summer festival. In recent seasons, we've come to expect the quality of the juvenile maidens at this track to be very high and the festival opener, the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden, looks certain to live up to expectation. Aidan O'Brien's Benevuto Cellini has got to be the pick, though Ipanema Beach has decent form in the book and there are also some interesting newcomers in the field. The selection was quite well touted prior to his debut and while he gave best to another well-regarded stablemate, Dorset, it could be argued he emerged as the brightest prospect in the race. Prominent from quite an early stage, he was the only one to make a race of it with the winner, who had the benefit of previous experience. With the experience and the benefit of a decent draw, he should be in the van from the outset and can see off his seven rivals. Debutants Bond, Limestone, Hardy Warrior and his own stablemate, Endorsement, are worth noting in the betting, but Ipanema Beach has run to a good level on all three starts and ought to present the greatest danger. Joseph O'Brien's Defiantly ran a race full of promise when a fast-finishing third to two experienced sorts and he can build on that with victory in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Median Auction Maiden, Sigliosa and Edge Of Seventeen can fill the frame. Defiantly's stablemate, Beautiful Affair, was unlucky in running last time out, at Tipperary, can make amends in the SIS Supporting Irish Racing Handicap. Downpatrick hosts the first of two days of action, and Willie Mullins can take the second race with Full Confession, while Edward O'Grady's Betty Dutton can earn reward for her consistency by taking the C. Russell Auto Sales Beginners' Chase.
