Mumbai metro line 4 achieves milestone with U-girder installation at Kapurbawdi station
Thane: The Mumbai Metro Line 4 (Wadala–Gaimukh) reached a major milestone with the successful overnight installation of eight U-girders at Kapurbawdi Metro station on Ghodbunder Road, officials said. Each U-girder, weighing approximately 97.92 metric tonnes and spanning 18 metres, was launched and installed within just eight hours, marking it as a first for any Mumbai Metro project executed by the MMRDA. This achievement is seen as critical, as the agency plans to begin trial runs on the stretch before the end of this year, as recently announced by MMRDA chairman and deputy CM Eknath Shinde. The Kapurbawdi station is a key interchange connecting Metro Line 4 (Wadala–Gaimukh) and Line 5 (Thane–Bhiwandi–Kalyan), making this construction phase vital. A coordinated team of engineers, workers, traffic police, and marshals deployed heavy-duty machinery—including a 550-tonne crane and three 500-tonne cranes—to complete the launching of the collectively 783.3-tonne heavy girders safely and efficiently at its location. "One of the biggest challenges was managing heavy traffic along Ghodbunder Road," said an MMRDA spokesperson. "Our teams created a detailed girder launching plan, conducted risk analysis, and coordinated with Thane traffic police to ensure a smooth execution with minimal disruption. Fortunately, everything went as planned, and the work finished ahead of schedule." Stretching 32.3 km and featuring 30 elevated stations, Metro Line 4 is poised to become the backbone of East Mumbai's transit network. It will integrate with the Eastern Express Highway, Central Railway, Mono Rail, and future Metro Lines 2B, 5, and 6, aiming to cut commute times by 50–75%. Meanwhile, following Shinde's recent announcement, the MMRDA is preparing to conduct a trial run on at least a small 10-km stretch between Cadbury Junction (Eastern Express Highway) and Gaimukh (Ghodbunder Road). Line 4, which connects Wadala with Kasarwadavli, extends further to Gaimukh as Line 4A, further strengthening Mumbai's metro connectivity. Once operational, it promises to significantly ease travel for thousands of commuters.

Formulate robust monsoon contingency plan for crowded Metro stations: Maha Minister tells officials
Mumbai Suburban District Guardian Minister Ashish Shelar on Monday directed authorities responsible for Mumbai Metro, including the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to conduct thorough safety audits of ongoing metro construction sites and ensure uninterrupted Wi-Fi connectivity in underground metro stations. He further stressed the need for a robust contingency plan in case of emergencies or disruptions in metro services, particularly at high-footfall stations like Andheri and Ghatkopar. The plan must include coordination with the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and BrihanMumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) to facilitate smooth passenger evacuation and provide immediate alternative transport options. At the high-level meeting to assess the city's readiness ahead of the monsoon, minister Shelar further directed that the authorities responsible for Mumbai Metro, including the MMRDA, must not only maintain seamless coordination among themselves but also ensure constant communication and coordination with the BMC. He emphasized that instead of indulging in blame games, all the agencies must work as one united team. Shelar's directive comes days after the Acharya Atre Chowk Metro station, on the Aqua Line (Line 3), flooded in the first heavy rains of the season last Monday. The water seepage was reported when the concrete water-retaining wall constructed at an under-construction entry/exit collapsed due to a sudden ingress of water. The minister's office in a release said that a comprehensive presentation was made during the meeting outlining the monsoon preparedness measures completed so far. Both MMRDA and Maha Metro have established dedicated emergency control rooms, with teams deployed round-the-clock to respond to any crisis. A pothole-filling system has been put in place for each project site, while 114 km of road barricades have been cleared to ease traffic flow. Additionally, 19 ambulances have been strategically deployed and pumps installed at 107 key locations across the city. After the Metro preparedness meeting, Minister Shelar chaired another meeting with officials from the State Health Department, BMC and the Directorate of Medical Education to review the current Covid-19 situation in Mumbai, including case trends and healthcare system readiness. 'While new cases are being reported, there is no cause for alarm. However, high-risk individuals, particularly those with diabetes, hypertension or serious underlying health conditions, are advised to wear masks and consider getting re-vaccinated as a precautionary measure,' he said. He assured that coordination with central health agencies is ongoing, and that both the state health machinery and BMC are functioning as per the advisories issued by the Government of India.

Mumbai: Mumbai's public transport is set to get a major boost as Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) revamps 30 bus routes and launches new AC services from June 1. These changes aim to improve connectivity with Mumbai Metro Line 3 and make commuting easier for passengers. Major Route Redesign Launch of new AC bus services. Renumbering of existing routes. Introducing new routes for better connectivity. Changes in timetables to suit commuter demand. New AC Bus Services Launched Several new AC routes have been introduced to provide comfortable travel options: A-8: Mantralaya to Shivaji Nagar Terminus (8:05 AM to 10:50 PM). A-44: Upgraded from route 44, running Kala Chowki to Worli Depot. A-125: Navy Nagar to Worli Depot via Mohammed Ali Road. A-241: Santacruz to Malvani. A-175: Circular route from Pratiksha Nagar Depot to Prabhodhankar Thackeray Udyan via Antop Hill, Wadala Church, and Khodadad Circle. A-490: Mantralaya to Balkum, Thane (East) via Eastern Express Highway. Other AC services include routes 243, 343, 344, 347, 452, 459, 602, and 626 covering key suburbs and transit hubs like Malad, Goregaon, Mulund, and Pawai. Changes To Existing Routes Route 456, previously an AC route, has been converted into a regular circular route 456. Route 25 has been renumbered as route 29, running from Prabhodhankar Thackeray Udyan to Vihar Sarovar. Route 11 Limited is now diverted via Lalbaug flyover between Byculla Station and Parel, bypassing stops at Jijamata Udyan, Jai Hind Cinema, and Lalbaug. Integration With Mumbai Metro Line 3 This route rationalisation aligns with BEST's plan to improve last-mile connectivity with the Mumbai Metro Line 3 (Aqua Line), particularly as its second phase (BKC to Worli Naka) is set to launch soon. The Metro's final phase (Cuffe Parade) is also expected shortly. BEST plans to add 29 buses on 17 routes for Metro Phase II. Another 50 buses will be added on 30 routes for Phase III. These buses will follow ring-route patterns linking metro stations, suburban rail hubs, and commercial centres. Benefits For Commuters Reduced average wait times by up to 15 minutes due to route optimisation and increased service frequency. Enhanced feeder services to the metro system and better connectivity across Mumbai suburbs. Introduction of more AC buses on high-demand routes during peak hours for improved comfort. Fare Revision BEST, Mumbai's second-largest public transport operator with a fleet of around 2,800 buses serving over 30 lakh passengers daily, is facing a financial crunch. Revenues have dropped below Rs 700 crore in recent years, PTI reported. To improve financial health, BEST has proposed a fare revision: Doubling minimum fare for first 5 km travel. Removal of fare caps of Rs 20 (non-AC) and Rs 25 (AC) for journeys beyond 20 km. Expected additional annual revenue of Rs 590 crore from revised fares. The fare revision awaits approval from the Mumbai civic body and the Regional Transport Authority. BEST administration has urged passengers to review all new route changes and timings in advance through the official BEST website or mobile app. Commuters are advised to plan their travel accordingly to avoid inconvenience.

Stretch from Mantralaya to Vidhan Bhawan to be developed as administrative district of state: CM Devendra Fadnavis
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that the stretch from Mantralaya to Vidhan Bhawan encompassing ministerial bungalows will be developed as an administrative district of Maharashtra through a state-of-the-art development plan. Fadnavis said this at the Express Adda event held on Wednesday in Mumbai. He added that the design and development plans are already underway with an objective to create more space to accommodate administrative offices within the same premises. 'The Bombay High Court will be relocated to Bandra, but Mantralaya will remain in the same premises,' the chief minister said. However, he said, there are plans to make a new Mantralaya. 'All the bungalows of ministers and other structures between the Mantralaya and Vidhan Bhawan will undergo development and make the new administrative district of Maharashtra,' he said. The move is aimed at bringing all administrative offices, which are now scattered due to the lack of space and infrastructure, under one umbrella, he said. Fadnavis said that he is determined to take all the mega projects initiated during his first tenure as the chief minister to their logical end in the current tenure. The chief minister also said that Mumbai Metro projects criss-crossing through the city and its suburbs will change the mobility bringing huge relief to the Mumbaikars. With 70 lakh passenger capacity, it is almost parallel to Mumbai local trains which can carry 90 lakh passengers. The chief minister indicated that there are plans to make all local trains air-conditioned. The process of upgradation of local trains has led to better amenities to the commuters, he said. 'We have proposed to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for further enhancement of the local trains to bring it at par with Metro with the existing train fare,' Fadnavis said. On Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Notified Area (NAINA) city project, which is expected to be bigger than Mumbai, Fadnavis said, ' The detailed plans along with the process have already begun. Within NAINA, we plan an educational hub which entails collaboration with foreign universities. We will host the best foreign universities with ranking 50 to 100. Almost 12 foreign universities are likely to become a part of the hub. We have signed up with at least five best universities,' he said. According to Fadnavis, the Navi Mumbai airport will be completed in the next six months. The entire coastal road works will also be completed in the same tenure. 'The infrastructure driven development will not only help in connectivity and reduce travel time but also encourage people to switch to public transport. We are bringing integrated single ticket system which will allow people to use Metro, local train, bus or mono rail using the same ticket,' he said. According to the CM, the water taxi which is high on the government agenda will become a reality soon. Recalling how RoRo services was initiated during his first tenure, Fadnavis said the water taxi jetty work will be taken up near Radio Club. He lamented that there were some protests from South Mumbai residents. 'But gradually, once the Bombay Port Trust is developed, we will shift the water taxi infrastructure there,' he said. Fadnavis said that the land acquired for the coastal road stretch will be essentially preserved only for stated projects with environmental safeguards. 'We will not allow any real estate development on this claimed land,' he said, adding, 'The Race Course at Mahalaxmi will be preserved and not opened for any real estate development.'
