UGC gives letter of intent to five foreign universities to open campuses in Maharashtra: Fadnavis
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 14 (ANI): The University Grants Commission has given a letter of intent to five foreign universities to establish their campuses in Maharashtra, said Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. This is part of the 'Mumbai Rising - Creating an International Education City' initiative. The Chief Minister was speaking to the media after participating in the Granting of Letters of Intent (LOIs) ceremony along with Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Fadnavis said that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the National Education Policy has opened doors for knowledge in India. 'UGC has given a letter of intent to five universities. Their campuses will be constructed in Maharashtra,' Fadnavis told reporters. The five foreign universities, which have been given a letter of intent, are the University of Aberdeen, the University of York, the Illinois Institute of Technology, the University of Western Australia, and the IED European Institute of Design. 'The five universities are the University of Aberdeen, the University of York, the Illinois Institute of Technology, the University of Western Australia, and the IED European Institute of Design... Under PM Modi, NEP has opened doors for knowledge in India,' the Chief Minister said. The initiative, led by the Government of Maharashtra with support from CIDCO, aims to develop an International Education City near the Navi Mumbai International Airport. The education hub, spanning a 5-km radius, will be the first of its kind in the country, offering students access to high-quality international education within India. Meanwhile, the Roads and Traffic Department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has completed the flyover connecting Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg (Vikhroli West) to the Eastern Express Highway (Vikhroli East). Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis shared a video of the flyover on social media and wrote that during the monsoon, citizens face traffic jams in the area, so the government has ordered that the flyover be opened for the public without waiting for an official ceremony. 'Heartiest congratulations to the Mumbai Municipal Corporation for completing the very important 615-meter bridge connecting Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg in Vikhroli to the Eastern Expressway! During the monsoon season, there are often traffic jams on Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg, causing inconvenience to the citizens. Considering this, I, along with my colleagues Deputy Chief Minister Eknathrao Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Ajitdada Pawar, have decided to open this bridge for the citizens without waiting for any official ceremony and have also given orders to that effect,' the Chief Minister said. CM Fadnavis added that he began the work for this flyover under his tenure in 2018, and Rs 104.77 have been spent on the project. (ANI)

Mumbai to become global education hub as top universities receive LoIs
New Delhi, June 14 (UNI) Mumbai, the commercial capital of the country, is all set to become a world-class education hub with the Government on Friday paving the way for five globally renowned universities from the United Kingdom, Australia, the United States, and Italy to establish campuses in the city. At an event held in Mumbai today, Dharmendra Pradhan Union Education Minister issued Letters of Intent (LoIs) to the prestigious institutions including University of York (UK), University of Aberdeen (UK), University of Western Australia (Australia), Illinois Institute of Technology (USA) and Instituto Europeo Di Design (IED) (Italy), as per a statement issued here. The move is part of the vision outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, and it will help to elevate India's higher education landscape and attract students from both within the country and abroad, said Pradhan at the event 'Mumbai Rising: Creating an International Education City'. These top-tier universities will offer undergraduate and postgraduate courses across a range of disciplines, including Business, Economics, Computer Science, Public Health, Data Science, Design, and more, said the Minister. Pradhan also asserted that 'The establishment of these foreign campuses in India will provide students with opportunities to pursue world-class education while significantly reducing the financial burden of studying abroad. India is on its way to becoming a preferred study destination.' Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, emphasised the immense value these global institutions will bring to the state, noting that the NEP 2020 has paved the way for top international universities to establish a presence in India. 'This is a game-changer for talented Indian students who faced barriers in accessing quality international education due to affordability and geographical constraints. Now, they can study at globally recognized institutions without leaving the country,' he said. The universities receiving LoIs are all ranked among the top 500 in the QS World University Rankings. Notably, the University of Western Australia plans to establish two campuses—one in Mumbai/Navi Mumbai and another in Chennai. This is the first-time foreign universities will establish a presence in Mumbai/Navi Mumbai, with some expected to set up campuses in the upcoming Education City in Navi Mumbai under the UGC (Setting up and Operation of Campuses of Foreign Higher Educational Institutions in India) Regulations, 2023. In addition to the five universities already set to establish campuses in Mumbai, talks are ongoing with five more global institutions, said the statement. Dr. Vineet Joshi, Secretary, Department of Higher Education, and Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), highlighted the regulations that enable seamless collaboration between global institutions and Indian universities, fostering a dynamic learning environment for the country's vast talent pool.

NEP 2020 key to making India global education hub: Dharmendra Pradhan
Mumbai: Union Minister for Education Dharmendra Pradhan said on Saturday that National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 envisions India as a global study destination, offering premium education at an affordable cost. He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of positioning India as a global knowledge hub the country is encouraging top international universities to establish campuses here, while empowering Indian Higher education institutions to expand globally. He was speaking at an event titled 'Mumbai Rising: Creating an International Education City' held in Mumbai to issue Letters of Intent (LoIs) to five globally reputed universities from the United Kingdom, Australia, the United States of America and Italy. The Minister said the establishment of the branch campuses of University of York, University of Aberdeen, University of Western Australia, Illinois Institute of Technology and Instituto Europeo Di Design (IED), Italy, reflects a deep and growing trust in India's education ecosystem and is a major milestone as we mark five transformative years of the NEP 2020. The handing of the LOIs took place in the presence of Chief Minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis, Minister of Higher and Technical Education, Government of Maharashtra, Chandrakant Patil, Principal Secretary, Government of Maharashtra, Aseem Gupta and Secretary, Department of Higher Education and Chairman, UGC, Dr Vineet Joshi. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that the swift issuance of LoIs reflects the speed and commitment of the government. He thanked the Prime Minister for NEP 2020 which has a provision for foreign universities to be a part of Indian education sector. The five universities, he noted, have added immense value to the State and NEP 2020 has truly opened doors for top global institutions to establish campuses in India. He stated that talented Indian students who faced accessibility and affordability issues in pursuing foreign education can now do so while remining in the country at reduced costs.

State govt to join hands with 5 leading foreign universities for education city in Navi Mumbai
MUMBAI: The state government will present Letters of Intent (LOIs) to five leading foreign universities as part of the 'Mumbai Rising – Creating an International Education City' initiative. The official ceremony will take place at noon today at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai. The five universities invited to establish campuses in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai include the University of Aberdeen, the University of York, the University of Western Australia, the Illinois Institute of Technology, and the Istituto Europeo di Design (IED). Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan will be the chief guest at the event. Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, deputies Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, and higher and technical education minister Chandrakant Patil are also expected to attend. The initiative, led by the Government of Maharashtra with support from CIDCO, aims to develop an International Education City near the Navi Mumbai International Airport. The education hub, spanning a 5-km radius, will be the first of its kind in the country offering students access to high-quality international education within India. Officials said that the project could not only improve academic standards in India but also promote cultural exchange and collaboration between Indian and international students and faculty. Coffee table book captures impact of infra projects in Maharashtra under Fadnavis
The Indian Express Group unveiled a special coffee table book capturing the scale, vision and impact of various mega infrastructure projects initiated or completed under the leadership of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis during his tenure as CM and Deputy CM (since 2014). Titled Mumbai Rising, the book outlines developments that have transformed connectivity, urban transport, public infrastructure and urban housing projects in Mumbai over the past decade. The 88-page book provides a look into transformative years of the state's infrastructure development — when the state received unprecedented investment after by implementation in sectors such as transport, highway, housing, urban transit and logistics. The projects cut across Fadnavis' stints as Chief Minister between 2014 and 2019, as Dy Chief Minister between June 2022 and November 2024 and then as Chief Minister from December 2024. From the recently fully-opened 701-km Samruddhi Mahamarg, which brings Nagpur and Mumbai closer by around 9 hours (from travel time of 17 hours), to the expanding Mumbai Metro network, the book documents projects undertaken by Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) and Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) and others. Some key projects featured include the coastal road, the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) also known as Atal Setu, the completed and future corridors of Mumbai Metro, the Thane Creek Bridge 3 and one of the the most-awaited Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA); each signifying a direction towards integrated, sustainable and future-ready urban growth. It also includes a section on urban infrastructure in the metropolitan region and road connectivity, covering the improvement of internal roads, expressway extensions, rural bridges and access corridors in Marathwada, Vidarbha and Konkan region. The book traces how infrastructure has been used as a tool of equitable development, bringing connectivity to regions that had long remained on the drawing board. The book is a visual documentation and a narrative of policy decisions and administrative reforms too. It also highlights how these infrastructure efforts were possible due to the synergy between Centre and the state. With Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Centre, Maharashtra under Fadnavis' leadership was able to pursue its infrastructure ambitions aggressively.
