Israeli Escalation Raises Tensions as Lebanon Prepares to Hold Municipal Elections in South

Lebanon fears that Israeli military escalation could undermine municipal elections scheduled for Saturday in the southern provinces of Nabatieh and South Lebanon, after two days of heavy bombardment raised concerns among voters. Israeli strikes on Monday and Tuesday targeted areas across the South, fueling anxiety among displaced residents who had planned to return to their villages to vote. A Lebanese ministerial source told Asharq Al-Awsat the latest escalation, particularly Tuesday's shelling of towns beyond the immediate border area, appears to be 'an attempt by Israel to disrupt voter turnout by heightening tension and fear.' The source added that the strikes seemed aimed at 'blocking efforts to restore normal life to the South and to undermine a sense of safety through the electoral process.' Lebanon will press ahead with municipal elections in the South this weekend despite the spike in Israeli attacks, Interior Minister Ahmad Hajjar said on Tuesday, reaffirming that the state would not compromise on its sovereignty. The elections in the South will conclude the polls that have been held over the past three weeks. 'The Lebanese state has made its decision clear there will be no bargaining over our sovereignty in the South,' Hajjar told reporters after chairing a meeting to oversee preparations for the polls. Authorities are in contact with international actors to halt Israeli violations during the electoral period, he said, amid fears that security tensions could deter voter turnout or delay ballot counting. 'Israeli aggression and violations continue, and parts of the South remains occupied,' Hajjar said. 'But from the President to the Prime Minister and the Interior Ministry, we are engaged in all necessary diplomatic efforts to stop these violations, especially during the elections, through to the vote count and announcement of results.' Hajjar expressed hope that talks with member states of the ceasefire committee would help secure a calm election day. 'We are not waiting for guarantees,' he said, 'but we are determined to hold these elections and to assert our presence and sovereignty in this dear part of our land.'

MP Ghayath Yazbek tells LBCI: No alliance with Hezbollah in Beirut, Lebanon needs a unified state strategy

MP Ghayath Yazbek of the Strong Republic bloc said that insisting on holding onto weapons only weakens the Lebanese state's position in efforts to push Israel out of Lebanese territory. Speaking on LBCI's "Nharkom Said" TV show, he urged Hezbollah to empower the Lebanese state by handing over this leverage, allowing it to negotiate more effectively with international actors to end Israel's occupation of southern border points. Yazbek also said he supports the idea that Lebanon should be the last country to sign a peace deal with Israel. Commenting on Beirut's upcoming municipal elections, he stressed the importance of Christian participation to prevent the city from falling under one political group, adding: "We have not allied with Hezbollah in Beirut—our candidacy is a statement of faith in the city's diversity."

The elections were held in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Northern Cape, and Western Cape on Wednesday, 14 May. The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) said the ANC retained its seats in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, and won a seat in Northern Cape, while the Democratic Alliance (DA) won a seat in the Western Cape. In ward 24 in the City of Johannesburg, Gauteng, the ANC retained the seat it won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 54.76% of the total votes cast, compared to 55.70% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout was 27.37%. In ward 4, Mpofana, KwaZulu-Natal, the ANC defeated its biggest rivals uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) to retain the seat it won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 51.09% of the total votes cast, compared to 68% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout was 63.67%. That's not all, in ward 5 in the Nama Khoi Local Municipality, Northern Cape, the ANC won a seat previously held by the Namakwa Civic Movement in the 2021 Municipal Elections with 37.10% of the total votes cast, compared to 43.19% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout was 64.60%. Meanwhile, in ward 9 in the Stellenbosch Municipality, Western Cape, the DA retained the seat it won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 94.74% of the total votes cast, compared to 85.59% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout was 6.59%. The ANC said the strong showing in Wednesday's by-elections affirmed the continued relevance of the ANC as a people's movement rooted in struggle, service, and transformation. ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri said the victories are a result of tireless groundwork by ANC volunteers, branch structures and community organisers who kept the flame of the movement burning in every street, village and township. 'The high turnout and robust support from the streets of Soweto to the rural heartland of Mpofana and the reclaimed ground in Nama Khoi, reaffirm that the ANC is reconnecting with its people and reclaiming its historic role as the leader of society,' Bhengu-Motisri said.
