Carlos Correas 10th-inning blast lifts Twins past Mariners

Carlos Correa homered leading off the 10th inning as the Minnesota Twins pulled off an improbable comeback to defeat the host Seattle Mariners 12-6 Friday night, Willi Castro hit two homers and Trevor Larnach also went deep for the Twins, who rallied from a four-run deficit. Seattle's Cal Raleigh hit two homers to become the first catcher in major league history to hit 20 by the end of May. Teammate Randy Arozarena also homered. Correa hit the first pitch of the 10th from reliever Casey Legumina (4-3) over the wall in left-center field to also score ghost runner DaShawn Keirsey Jr. The Twins then loaded the bases with two outs and got a two-run single by Byron Buxton and a two-run double by Larnach to pull away. Twins closer Jhoan Duran (4-1) got the victory. Minnesota scored three runs with two outs in the ninth off Mariners closer Andres Munoz to tie it at 6-6. They were the first earned runs this season allowed by Munoz, who leads the AL with 17 saves. Former Mariner Ty France led off the ninth with a single to right. After Munoz struck out the next two batters, Castro hit a two-run shot to right to pull the Twins within 6-5. Buxton, who was making his return from the injured list (concussion), grounded a single to left, stole second and scored on Larnach's single to center to tie it. Raleigh broke a tie with the New York Yankees' Aaron Judge for the AL lead in homers with a three-run shot, his 20th of the season, off Twins right-hander Zebby Matthews (0-2) in the first. Matthews graduated from the same school as Raleigh -- Smoky Mountain High in Sylva, N.C. Raleigh added a two-run shot in the eighth, his 21st, off Twins reliever Cole Sands, who was his teammate at Florida State. Seattle scored four times in the first inning. J.P. Crawford led off with an infield hit and Jorge Polanco lined a single to right. With one out, Raleigh hit a ball just inside the right-field foul pole. Arozarena followed with a blast into the Twins' bullpen in left-center field. Larnach led off the fourth with a homer to right. Ryan Jeffers followed with a double to left, took third on a groundout and scored on Brooks Lee's grounder to second as the Twins halved their deficit. Castro went deep to right-center with two outs in the seventh to make it 4-3. Raleigh curled another homer around the right-field foul pole in the eighth after Julio Rodriguez singled with two outs. Matthews settled down after the first and went seven innings. He gave up four runs on six hits, with one walk and seven strikeouts. Mariners starter Bryan Woo went 6 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on six hits, with one walk and three strikeouts.

BYD overtakes Tesla in Europe for first time in BEV registrations

China's BYD has achieved a milestone by surpassing Tesla in battery electric vehicle (BEV) registrations in Europe for the first time. According to a report from JATO Dynamics, BYD registered 7,231 BEVs in April, ahead of Tesla's 7,165 units. This development highlights BYD's growing presence in the European market, a key focus area for the company. Tesla experienced a 49% decline in BEV sales in Europe during April, while BYD's sales surged by 169%. Market registrations are often used as a proxy for sales, as Tesla does not disclose monthly or regional sales figures. Despite this setback, Tesla shares rose nearly 2%, reflecting investor confidence. JATO Dynamics global analyst Felipe Munoz said: "Although the difference between the two brands' monthly sales totals may be small, the implications are enormous. This is a watershed moment for Europe's car market, particularly when you consider that Tesla has led the European BEV market for years, while BYD only officially began operations beyond Norway and the Netherlands in late 2022." Tesla's challenges in Europe are evident, with registrations falling in countries like France (59%), Denmark (67%), Sweden (81%), the UK (62%), and Germany (46%). The EU imposes a 10% tariff on BYD vehicles, with an additional 17% for BEVs. However, BYD's success is not isolated. Legacy automakers like Volkswagen, BMW, and Audi are also experiencing growth in BEV sales, with increases of 61%, 5%, and 48%, respectively. Munoz added: "While the electric vehicle segment was a bright spot for Europe's new passenger car market last month, these gains were offset by significant declines among ICE vehicles.' JATO reported that BEVs and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) accounted for 26% of new car registrations in Europe, setting a new record. BEVs made up 17% of this total, while PHEVs represented 9%. BYD plans to expand further by building a factory in Hungary and introducing its bestselling EV, the Dolphin Surf, to Europe, priced around $26,000. BYD beats Tesla in European EV sales despite EU tariffs in 'watershed moment,' report says

BYD sold more pure battery electric vehicles in Europe than Tesla for the first time ever last month — a "watershed moment" for the region's car market, according to a report from JATO Dynamics. New car registrations data from the automotive intelligence firm shows that BYD's Europe volumes rose 359% in April from last year as the company continues its global expansion efforts. Over the same period, Tesla reported yet another monthly drop, with total volumes down 49%, JATO said. That follows protests against CEO Elon Musk and the company in the region. According to Felipe Munoz, global automotive analyst at JATO, though the difference between the two brands' monthly sales totals is relatively small, the implications of BYD beating out Tesla "are enormous." "This is a watershed moment for Europe's car market, particularly when you consider that Tesla has led the European BEV market for years, while BYD only officially began operations beyond Norway and the Netherlands in late 2022," Munoz said. JATO added that BYD is also beating well established European car brands across the region, outselling Fiat and Seat in France, for example. That growth comes even before production begins at its new plant in Hungary, which is expected to become the center of European production operations. BYD's success in the EU comes despite the economic bloc's imposition of punitive tariffs on battery EVs made in China last October. It attributed the move to unfair trade practices. The punitive tariffs appeared to be favorable to Tesla, assigning its made-in-China vehicles a 7.8% duty compared with BYD's 17%. Other Chinese EV makers were given tariffs as high as about 35%. The EU also has a standard 10% car import duty. JATO's report said that while tariffs had an initial impact on the sales of Chinese automakers, the companies have mitigated it by expanding and diversifying their European line-ups with the introduction of plug-in hybrids. "China is not only the world leader in BEVs; its automakers are global leaders in plug-in hybrid vehicles too," Munoz said. Battery EVs run entirely on electricity, while hybrid vehicles combine an electric battery with an internal combustion engine. Hybrid vehicles have not yet been targeted by EU tariffs. Meanwhile, there has been growing demand in the region's EV segment, with JATO data showing that registrations of battery EVs and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles are up by 28% and 31%, respectively, despite declines among internal combustion engine vehicles. Registrations of all electric vehicles made by Chinese automakers in April rose by 59% year on year, reaching almost 15,300 units in April, the report added. Ahead of the EU's tariff decision last year, Rhodium had predicted that tariffs would need to be as high as 55% for the European market to be unattractive for Chinese EV exporters. In March, it was revealed that Tesla, which only sells pure battery vehicles, fell behind BYD in total annual sales. Tesla's shares have fallen over 10% over the same period amid blowback from Musk's involvement with the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump. The CEO recently committed to leading Tesla for the next five years. BYD shares were up 3.9% in Hong Kong trading on Friday and have surged about 78% year to date.

Sels saves, Rice runs the show, Salah scores – Premier League team of the season

Here, the PA news agency picks out 11 players who have impressed over the 2024-2025 season. Belgian keeper Sels has produced a string of consistent displays as Nottingham Forest pushed towards European qualification and also reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup. The 33-year-old, who had a spell at Newcastle earlier in his career, has 13 clean sheets to put himself in the running for the Premier League's Golden Glove award. Only way is up,never look down — Milos Kerkez (@kerkez_official) April 15, 2025 Cherries left-back Kerkez has caught the eye this season as Andoni Iraola's side continued to punch above their 21-year-old Hungary international, signed from Dutch side AZ Alkmaar in July 2023, is rumoured to be on the summer watchlist of several clubs – including Liverpool and Manchester City. A post shared by Virgil (@virgilvandijk) Liverpool captain Van Dijk has again been a colossus at the heart of the Reds defence, driving Arne Slot's men on to the Premier League title – a record-equalling 20th English championship for the Anfield club. The 33-year-old Netherlands defender, who ended speculation over his future by signing a new contract in April, was just as cool on the ball as he was strong at winning it back – leading the league's passing statistics with more than 2,800 completed through 36 games. 💬 "I learnt very early the value of competing and the importance of being a competitor." Gabriel reflects on his journey to The Arsenal family 📈 Read our full feature now 👇 — Arsenal (@Arsenal) February 18, 2025 Brazilian Gabriel may have seen his season cut short by a hamstring injury in April which required surgery, but nevertheless he was one of the standout defenders for the majority of the campaign. With Gabriel in the side, Arsenal returned 10 clean sheets, winning 16 league games and losing just three. The centre-back was also a threat from set pieces, scoring three headers. Eagles' marauding wing-back Munoz has been an integral part of the swift transition from defence to attack by Oliver Glasner's slick side, who have set a new club-record Premier League points tally. Covering plenty of ground either surging forward or tracking back, Munoz helped deliver Palace's goal in the FA Cup final for Eberechi Eze – and but for a tight offside VAR call, the Colombian would have also got on the scoresheet in the second half at Wembley. Newcastle winger Murphy has enjoyed a standout campaign, providing 12 Premier League assists – second only to Mohamed Salah – and scoring eight goals. Having helped the Toon Army end their long wait for silverware with a memorable victory over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final and also pushing Eddie Howe's men on towards a top-four finish, the 30-year-old could well have put himself in England contention this summer. Three from three for Bruno in March 😍🔥 🏅 United Player of the Month🏅 #PL Player of the Month🏅 #PFA Fans' Player of the Month#MUFC — Manchester United (@ManUtd) April 8, 2025 While Manchester United may have endured a forgettable domestic campaign, Portuguese playmaker Fernandes dug in to drag the team on into the Europa League final – but that then proved a match too far for Ruben Amorim's misfiring side who were beaten by Tottenham in Bilbao. Leading by example in an underperforming Premier League team bereft of ideas, the Red Devils captain has made nine assists and scored eight times – with three coolly dispatched from the penalty spot. Although Arsenal's title push eventually ran out of steam, England international Rice remained at full speed as the heartbeat of the midfield. As well as his superb free-kick double in the memorable Champions League quarter-final first leg win over Real Madrid, the 26-year-old cracked in another fine Premier League goal in the Gunners' last home game which secured a return to Europe's elite again. — Mohamed Salah (@MoSalah) April 27, 2025 Salah made himself the leading contender for individual awards after a stellar campaign with 28 Premier League goals and 18 assists – topping the rankings for both. Having joined his Liverpool captain in signing a new deal, the 32-year-old Egypt forward will be determined to better those impressive returns again next season – and also push Slot's men on in the quest for more European success. As well as being a solid defensive unit, Forest have also boasted a formidable frontline – with Wood plundering 20 goals to date. The New Zealand international – who moved to the City Ground, initially on loan, in January 2023 – has produced his best tally in the Premier League this season. A post shared by Alexander Isak (@alex_isak) Sweden forward Isak has fired in 23 league goals so far – and also scored in Newcastle's Carabao Cup final at 25-year-old is expected to be a summer target for Arsenal, but could just be persuaded to stay on at St James' Park and lead the Toon Army's next European adventure.
