Probe every aspect of Zara Qairina's death, says Sabah governor
Sabah governor Musa Aman said speculation and baseless claims will not only affect the investigation, but also upset Zara Qairina Mahathir's grieving family. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Sabah governor Musa Aman has instructed the authorities to carry out their investigation into the death of Form 1 student Zara Qairina Mahathir transparently, thoroughly, and without fear or favour. 'Every aspect must be investigated,' Musa said in a statement today. He also called on everyone, especially social media users, to refrain from speculating about the case or spreading baseless claims and conspiracy theories about the teenager's death. He said such actions would not only affect the investigation, but would also upset Zara's grieving family. 'We need to let the law take its course and stand with Zara's family in their search for the truth as well as ensure that the case is solved,' he said. Musa also offered Zara's family his condolences. Separately, the Sabah palace said tahlil prayers for Zara will be held on Thursday after maghrib prayers at the city mosque. Zara was found unconscious at 4am on July 16 after she allegedly fell from the third floor of her school's hostel in Papar, Sabah. She died at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital the following day. Zara's mother, Noraidah Lamat, filed a police report on Aug 3 after stating that she recalled seeing bruises on parts of her daughter's back. Zara's body was exhumed for a post-mortem yesterday. Earlier today, a task force from the Bukit Aman criminal investigation department was sent to Sabah to take over the investigations into the 13-year-old's death.

He said the State Government will continue to strengthen preservation efforts to boost tourism, with positive spillover effects for the local economy. Hajiji noted that festivals like FKAT benefit a wide range of people, including entrepreneurs, homestay operators, artists, and small traders. They also serve to educate the younger generation on the value of safeguarding the state's cultural treasures. He highlighted the RM27 million Tawau International Cultural Centre (TICC), scheduled for completion in December 2027, which will become a hub for arts and heritage. Once completed, it will elevate Tawau as a competitive international cultural centre. With the theme 'Cultural Diversity: Warriors, Handicrafts, and Marriage,' FKAT celebrates Sabah's multiracial society and serves as a platform for cultural exchange, featuring participants from Kazakhstan, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Hajiji said the festival not only promotes cultural exhibitions but also strengthens unity, fosters respect for heritage, and enhances Tawau's role as a border town rich in cultural networks and regional cooperation. * Read full report in tomorrow's print paper or log in or sign up for e-paper and premium online news access. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. Hajiji to consult GRS partners first on dissolving state assembly
GRS chairman Hajiji Noor, who is chief minister, said he would discuss and inform the GRS party presidents when the time comes to dissolve the assembly. PETALING JAYA : Any decision to seek dissolution of the Sabah state assembly, which would trigger fresh elections, will be made only with the consensus of Gabungan Rakyat Sabah partners, GRS chairman Hajiji Noor said today. Hajiji, who is chief minister, said that while he holds the prerogative to advise the governor, Musa Aman, to dissolve the assembly, he prefers that the decision be made collectively, in line with a GRS commitment to joint decision-making. 'We are in GRS, and any decision must go through the Supreme Council,' Bernama quoted him as saying. 'I will discuss and inform the party presidents when the time comes to dissolve the assembly,' he told reporters in Penampang, Sabah, after closing a joint convention of Parti Bersatu Sabah and Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku. However, he did not indicate when the discussion with the Supreme Council would be held. When asked whether he would allow the assembly to dissolve automatically this November, Hajiji said the matter would be considered carefully. The current state assembly's term expires on Nov 11, if not dissolved earlier. Election must be held within 60 days of dissolution. Commenting on speculation that GRS may contest the election independently, Hajiji said the matter would also be discussed at the Supreme Council level. The party has been in discussions with Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional about electoral cooperation, after stating that it could contest the election on its own should PH and BN form an alliance. Earlier today, the opposition Perikatan Nasional ruled out electoral alliance with GRS. GRS comprises Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah, PBS, STAR, Parti Maju Sabah, United Sabah National Organisation , Liberal Democratic Party, Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah and Parti Cinta Sabah. Hajiji described today's PBS-STAR convention as a historic milestone that strengthened local political cooperation. It reflected political maturity, prioritising the interests of the people and the state over political differences, he said.

TYT concerned over radical attitudes and intolerance
Published on: Saturday, June 28, 2025 Published on: Sat, Jun 28, 2025 Text Size: Musa stressed that the Ma'al Hijrah celebration should serve as a platform for reflection and a starting point towards a more holistic future, with Islamic values and principles as the foundation for comprehensive development. Kota Kinabalu: The development of a progressive and dynamic Madani Ummah (civil society) cannot rely solely on leadership but requires the commitment and responsibility of the entire community. Head of State Tun (Dr) Musa Aman stressed that the Ma'al Hijrah celebration should serve as a platform for reflection and a starting point towards a more holistic future, with Islamic values and principles as the foundation for comprehensive development. 'Muslims must embrace the spirit of Hijrah as a catalyst for transforming our mindset, work culture and life direction. 'Being progressive means advancing in knowledge, economics, technology and thought. 'Being dynamic requires us to be agile in facing the challenges of the times and adaptable to global changes. 'However, true progress cannot be achieved by merely imitating other civilisations. It must be built upon the Islamic spirit in all fields – education, leadership, economics and human development,' he said at the State-level Ma'al Hijrah 1447H celebration, Friday. Musa, who was accompanied by his wife Toh Puan Faridah Tussin, said change must begin from within before it can be extended to the family, community and nation, in order to raise a tech-savvy generation with strong morals and character. He also highlighted that one of the major challenges in building a Madani society is the presence of radical attitudes, intolerance and moral decline among the younger generation. 'Character education must be strengthened, religious outreach (dakwah) must be delivered with wisdom and the misuse of social media must be controlled to prevent it from becoming a tool for spreading hatred,' he added. Musa further emphasised that religious institutions, educational bodies and the mass media play a vital role in shaping the collective awareness of the Muslim community. 'Building a Madani Ummah that upholds values of justice, tolerance and mutual respect is a shared responsibility that must be shouldered by all, regardless of status,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
