Former Tennessee football coach Derek Dooley 'weighing' U.S. Senate run for Georgia

Former Tennessee football coach Derek Dooley is considering a new profession. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the former Vols coach is weighing his options on joining the upcoming U.S. Senate race in Georgia. Dooley, who would be joining the Republican Party, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he hasn't entered his name yet into the race against Democratic incumbent Jon Ossoff, and will have a decision on whether he'll enter the Republican primary in the "coming weeks." REQUIRED READING: Why Tennessee football fans are dissatisfied despite Josh Heupel's wild success "Georgia deserves strong, common-sense leadership in the U.S. Senate that represents all Georgians and focuses on results — not headlines," Dooley told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "I believe our state needs a political outsider in Washington — not another career politician — to cut through the noise and partisanship and get back to real problem-solving." As noted by Saturday Down South, Dooley received a law degree from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1994. Dooley, 56, is also the son of legendary Georgia coach Vince Dooley, who still holds the record as the Bulldogs' winningest coach with 201 victories. In his three seasons at Tennessee, Dooley led the Vols to a 15-21 overall record. His best season came during his first season on Rocky Top, as Tennessee went 6-7 overall and earned a berth to the Music City Bowl. Tennessee would lose its lone bowl game under Dooley, 30-27 to North Carolina in 2010. Following his tenure at Tennessee, Dooley spent four seasons in the NFL as the Dallas Cowboys' wide receiver coach before returning to the college ranks to be the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Missouri from 2018-19. His most recent coaching job came as a senior offensive analyst at Alabama for Nick Saban across the 2022 and 2023 seasons. Hugh Freeze's Strong Leadership Endorsement For Auburn Star Lineman

There was not much to brag about when the Auburn Tigers ended their 2024 campaign with just five wins and seven losses. They could not even bring themselves to a bowl game with how badly the season went. Now, Coach Hugh Freeze's players know better as they all aim to get back to College Football Playoff contention. A lot of the Auburn squad were young guns throughout Coach Hugh Freeze's first two years with the Tigers. As the losses piled up, so did their experiences and veteran acumen. There's no greater example of this than Connor Lew. I think those guys took charge initially until guys like Jackson Arnold came in," Freeze said. Lew is now entering his third season with Auburn. He has played 23 games under Coach Freeze and is continuously striving to get better. In his first year, he saw the Tigers reach the Music City Bowl before losing to the Maryland Terrapins. Last season, everyone struggled as the team could not keep up with the intensity of the SEC. Advertisement Jackson Arnold is going to need guys who will keep the pocket from collapsing. With all of the learnings he has soaked up through heartbreaks, Lew could be the lineman that the quarterback needs to pop off. CBS Sports shares early bowl projection for Auburn

CBS Sports shares early bowl projection for Auburn CBS Sports expects the Auburn Tigers to return to bowl season in 2025 after missing out last year. After missing out on bowl season last year, the Auburn Tigers are expected to be in the mix to secure a postseason destination in 2025. CBS Sports recently revealed their early bowl projections, which included the Auburn Tigers. CBS projects Auburn to head to Florida for bowl season to meet up with the Memphis Tigers in the Union Home Mortgage Gasparilla Bowl, which will take place at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida in December. The Gasparilla Bowl, which has also been historically known as the St. Petersburg Bowl and the Beef O'Brady's Bowl, has been played before Christmas since 2017. Last season, Florida defeated Tulane, 33-8, in the game that took place on Dec. 20. Auburn hopes to re-write its bowl history in 2025 After piecing together its longest bowl streak in program history by playing in nine-consecutive postseason games from 2013-21, Auburn has missed postseason play in two of the last three seasons. Auburn's last bowl win came in 2018 when it defeated Purdue in the Music City Bowl, 63-14. Since then, Auburn has lost four-straight bowl games, including its most recent appearance in 2023 when it lost 31-13 to Maryland in the Music City Bowl. Auburn is also looking to end a bleak streak in which they have lost seven games in each of the last four seasons. Last year, Auburn finished 5-7 with a 2-6 mark in SEC play. Auburn started the season with a 2-5 record before winning three of its last five games. The Memphis Tigers could be a quality bowl opponent for Auburn Auburn's projected bowl opponent, Memphis, won 11 games last season. The Tigers have won four bowl games in five seasons under head coach Ryan Silverfield, which includes a three-game streak. Memphis is projected to be another strong contender in the American Athletic Conference this season alongside Tulane, USF, and Navy. Gasparilla Bowl history If this projection were to hold, it would be Auburn's first-ever appearance in the Gasparilla Bowl and the second for Memphis. Memphis lost the inaugural Gasparilla Bowl to USF in 2008, 41-14.
