Coldplay review – after 12m tickets sold, this tour is still a mindblowing spectacle

Fireworks explode, lasers shoot, giant balls bounce and a sea of LED wristbands pulse in synchronicity as a rugby stadium in Hull is turned into an exploding candy shop of colour. Now in its third year and approaching a final 10 nights at Wembley Stadium – though it's expected to return from 2027 – Coldplay's Music of the Spheres tour is now the highest attended in rock history with more than 12m tickets sold. It's easy to see why. Over the Springsteen-esque shimmer of Higher Power, Chris Martin and co offer up a dizzying dose of Technicolor funk-pop with a level of production that is as impressive as it is overwhelming. At times it's like being plugged into a VR version of a 'good vibes only' LSD trip, including sections with the band dressed as cute aliens and the audience wearing 3D glasses that turn everything into lovehearts. There's no kiss-cam drama tonight and Martin is in effusive form, gushing praise for Hull and the crowd to almost sycophantic levels. It's arguably futile to criticise the cloying earnestness and heavy-handed sentiment of Coldplay, given how baked into their DNA and appeal it is by now, but it's laid on so thick it can feel exhausting. However, it is lapped up thirstily. When Martin tells the audience to 'dance like nobody's watching' over the EDM stomp of A Sky Full of Stars, to wave at someone in the crowd as if they are 'a best friend you've not met yet' during the eruptive surge of Yellow, or to send positivity to the people of Sudan through wiggling their fingers as pyrotechnics pop, they do just that. Fix You is turned into an almost candlelit mass-type singalong as the audience's wristbands turn into a warm yellow glow, and from a pounding version of Clocks to the gentle acoustic hum of Sparks, the band command, control and own every inch of the vast space as they move around it. An attempt at a karaoke-style singalong with the crowd to All My Love as a finale falls flat but it matters little. Fireworks are soon exploding again, bookending an evening that is pure visual extravaganza and intoxicating spectacle – like a rush of sugar to the head.

Justin Timberlake reveals Lyme disease diagnosis

People in entertainment Music FacebookTweetLink Justin Timberlake is sharing that he has been 'battling some health issues' as he concludes his Forget Tomorrow World Tour, including that he was recently diagnosed with Lyme disease. The 'Mirrors' singer opened up about his diagnosis in an Instagram post Thursday, writing that he wanted to 'shed some light' on what he's been going through behind the scenes. 'Living with this can be relentlessly debilitating, both mentally and physically,' Timberlake wrote. 'When I first got the diagnosis I was shocked for sure. But, at least I could understand why I would be onstage and in a massive amount of nerve pain or, just feeling crazy fatigue or sickness.' Lyme disease is a bacterial infection, with the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi being the most common cause, Dr. Leana Wen previously told CNN. Wen is an emergency physician and professor of health policy and management at the George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health. Lyme disease is transmitted through the bite of a particular tick, the black-legged tick. There are three stages of Lyme disease, which can include flu-like symptoms, dizziness, chest pain, palpitations, arthritis, facial nerve paralysis, ongoing joint pain, fatigue, depression, palpitations, and other neurological, rheumatological and cardiac involvement. Timberlake went on to say this week that he was 'faced' with a decision to stop touring or to keep going, writing that 'the joy that performing brings me far outweighs the fleeting stress my body was feeling.' 'I'm so glad I kept going,' he wrote. Timberlake has been on his Forget Tomorrow World Tour since April 2024, and performed his final show on Wednesday in Istanbul. In his post on Thursday, Timberlake celebrated his experience while candidly questioning what his Lyme disease diagnosis means for his future on stage. 'There really is no way to put into words the feeling of being on a stage and getting to share the experience of live music with all of you. It's a vibration of frequency that is unmatched,' he wrote. 'I honestly don't know what my future is onstage but I'll always cherish this run!' Timberlake acknowledged that while he's typically a private person and was initially 'reluctant' to speak about his health, he is choosing to open up about it now because he's 'trying to be more transparent about my struggles so that they aren't misinterpreted,' and wants to 'help others.' 'Sharing all of this with the hope that we can all find a way to be more connected,' he added. 'I'd like to do my part to help others experiencing this disease too.'

What to pack for a summer concert

Reviews and recommendations are unbiased and products are independently selected. Postmedia may earn an affiliate commission from purchases made through links on this page. Article content Summer concert season is upon us and that means Canadians coast-to-coast are gearing up to see some of their favourite bands at home, in other cities across the country, or even abroad. Concert-related travel is up thanks to demand: a survey from Reverb says that 7 per cent of show attendees now travel by air, but that number can certainly be higher depending on who the artist is and where they're playing. Article content Article content I recently attended Beyoncé's buzzy Cowboy Carter tour in London with Marriott. The two-hour show was held on a rainy evening in Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and unfortunately, I found myself unprepared for the evening's very wet festivities (shoutout to the Marriott team who saved the day with umbrellas, clear bags and phone chargers). Article content Article content Upcoming offerings via the Moments page for Canada include Katy Perry's The Lifetime Tour, Calgary-native Tate McRae's Miss Possessive tour, as well as dates from Taylor Swift pal Gracie Abrams and hip-hop legends Wu-Tang Clan. Article content While I almost got drenched at the Beyoncé concert, I still had an incredible time at the show: the superstar performed music from her latest album Cowboy Carter ('Tyrant' is my top track), along with hits from her now 28-year career. Queen Bey still has several dates to go for her tour, with stateside stops in D.C., Atlanta, and Las Vegas before the end of July. Article content I was in comfort during the Cowboy Concert concert thanks to the right jeans and shoes, and my makeup didn't move despite the wet and humid weather. Here's a few of the items I packed for my concert trip – along with a few I wished I had (and that you definitely should) to stay prepared, stylish and comfortable no matter what. Article content Clear bags are a requirement at most major concert venues now as an increased security measure – but that doesn't mean they can't be both stylish and practical. Vancouverite Shay Mitchell launched the BÉIS Stadium Crossbody Bag last summer to much fanfare, which is sized according to stadium and arena regulations. It's also made from a durable PVC, so you can be sure the bag will last for years to come. Available in black or beige.
