MBI Ushers New Era For Malaysia's Blockchain
GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, April 29 (Bernama) -- In support of the Government Digital Asset initiative, MIMOS Berhad today announced the operationalisation of the Malaysia Blockchain Infrastructure (MBI), a neutral and trusted platform for digital services and innovation across sectors. MIMOS Berhad, in a statement, said this milestone marks a pivotal moment in the nation's technological advancement, as MBI emerges as a strategic technological innovation and a core component of Malaysia's National Blockchain Roadmap, aligned with the Malaysian MADANI vision. Developed to be a catalyst for creativity, MBI fosters an environment where developers and innovators can explore and build cutting-edge blockchain applications that drive value and transformation across industries. 'The establishment of the MBI stands as a pivotal catalyst for the nation's digital advancement, purposefully developed to foster sustainable digital integration and support the creation of a cohesive, future-ready national digital infrastructure. 'This initiative is driven by MIMOS in strategic collaboration with its principal partner and key contributor, MyEG, underscoring a shared commitment to accelerating Malaysia's digital transformation and innovation agenda,' it said. According to MIMOS Berhad, the MBI also plays a vital role in streamlining a wide range of digital assets, including MyDigitalID verifiable credentials, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and decentralised finance (DeFi) applications, increasing accessibility to blockchain technology by simplifying the user experience and enabling broader participation for nontechnical users. It said early adopter industry partners, such as Masverse, Cokeeps, iTrace, Heitech Padu, and others, are leveraging MBI to deploy solutions in supply chain traceability, digital identity, asset custody, and tokenisation across public and private sectors. 'Solutions like MyDigitalID will benefit from MBI's integrated capabilities, ensuring verifiability, accessibility, and interoperability to support use cases ranging from simple on-site registrations to complex cross-border and commercial verifications. 'This initiative aims to foster innovation and interconnectivity across platforms, enhance decentralised transaction security, promote an inclusive digital economy, and ensure greater security and transparency in digital transactions, making blockchain technology more accessible and catalysing innovation across all sectors, it said.

'More importantly, it embodies digital inclusivity, making blockchain technology accessible to all Malaysians, regardless of their technical expertise. This streamlined approach enhances liquidity by aggregating resources from various platforms, enabling faster, more efficient, and cost-effective trading. 'As a catalyst for Malaysia's digital transformation, MBI is driving technological progress and contributing to the greater well-being of Malaysians and the nation. 'This platform is a testament to MIMOS', MOSTI's, and the MADANI Government's commitment to ensuring that the benefits of this transformative technology are shared equitably, driving sustainable economic growth and societal progress,' he was quoted as saying in the statement. The statement said that as the nation's applied research and development centre, MIMOS is pivotal in driving blockchain adoption, and the establishment of the MBI aims to address the challenges of a fragmented ecosystem by unifying diverse platforms. It uses Zetrix as its core chain, working in tandem with other public chains like Ethereum, Solana, and Private Blockchains to create a single interface. All stakeholders, industry, researchers, and policymakers must maintain a strong collaborative spirit to bring this initiative to fruition. A robust public and private partnership is essential for Malaysia to establish an inclusive, sustainable, and resilient blockchain ecosystem regionally, the statement read.

Visa exemption extended for five years to boost economy
PUTRAJAYA: The Visa Liberalisation Plan (PLV) for Chinese visitors has been extended for another five years, as the initiative has shown immediate positive impact on the country's economy, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. He said the decision to extend the PLV was part of a series of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and documents signed during Chinese President Xi Jinping's recent state visit to Malaysia, covering various sectors of cooperation. Among them was a joint visa exemption agreement for holders of public affairs and ordinary passports, signed by Saifuddin Nasution and China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi. 'We will extend it for the next five years, and after that, there will be an option to renew it for another five years - allowing Chinese nationals to stay in our country for up to 90 days as tourists. 'And China will reciprocate with the same arrangement for us,' he told reporters after the Home Ministry's monthly assembly here today. The Visa Liberalisation Plan is designed to boost national income and will be implemented by enhancing existing immigration facilities available to travellers from various regions, including Europe, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and West Asia. China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said the joint visa exemption agreement will deepen exchanges and cooperation, further advancing the China-Malaysia community with a shared future. Saifuddin Nasution said the arrangement has already shown positive results, with tourist arrivals from China on the rise. According to data from the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Chinese tourists spend an average of RM7,000 during their stay in Malaysia. 'So when we look at the arrival numbers, it's clear that this is a formula with immediate economic benefits and a significant impact,' he said. As of April this year, Malaysia has recorded close to 900,000 tourist arrivals from China, Saifuddin Nasution noted, adding that more than four million Chinese tourists visited the country last year. He stressed that the tourism aspect is an important component of the country's economic contributors because it has an immediate impact compared to investments. In another development, Saifuddin Nasution also launched the Investigation and Complaints Management System (SPEAKS), which aims to make it easier for the public to lodge complaints against members of the Royal Malaysia Police. 'Anyone wishing to file a complaint against police enforcement personnel can now do so through the SPEAKS platform, provided they include complete details such as the time, location, individuals involved, and the nature of the incident,' he said. He added that SPEAKS facilitates the public in submitting complaints to the Independent Police Conduct Commission (IPCC), enabling prompt and appropriate follow-up actions to be taken. Regarding MyDigital ID, Saifuddin Nasution, who also chairs the Cabinet Committee on MyDigital ID, said the ministry will table amendments to the National Registration Act to support the legal framework for its use. 'Our task is to present these amendments in Parliament to ensure the application, use, and transactions involving Digital ID are recognised as legally valid,' he said. He added that the National Registration Department (NRD) has been appointed the lead agency for MyDigital ID pre-registration, aimed at boosting digital ID enrolment nationwide. MyDigital ID, introduced in 2016, is a government initiative designed to provide secure and legally recognised digital identity verification for online users.

Home Minister hints at more MyDigital ID benefits
KUALA LUMPUR: There may be more 'benefits' for those paying traffic summonses if offenders perform their transactions using the MyDigital ID app, says Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. 'We are looking at things like greater discounts for app users. Previously, there was a 50% discount. For those using MyDigital ID, maybe it'll be 55%,' he said at a Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration hosted by the police at Titiwangsa Stadium yesterday. Traffic matters is just one area where the government is hoping for greater digitalisation, said the Home Minister in underscoring the government's intent to make the MyDigital ID app more relevant for everyday life. Acknowledging the app is not currently mandatory, he said the government had agreed to amend the National Registration Act 1959 to comprehensively implement this new digital identity system. 'This move is still at the proposal stage and has not yet been approved by Parliament. 'But we encourage the public to start using the app for identity verification in all dealings.' The event, which was also attended by Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar and Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain, saw Saifuddin presenting donations to the less fortunate, including orphans, widows and autistic children.
