How would a tycoon spend his RM100 'extraordinary tribute for Malaysians' gift from PMX?
Editor's Note: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reminded all parties not to belittle the RM100 additional cash aid for Malaysian citizens aged 18 and above under the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) programme. '(Critics say) it's just RM100 but you're earning RM40,000 or RM20,000 a month. Of course, RM100 means nothing to you but I know its value when we go to the villages,' PMX who is also Finance Minister said told the Finance Ministry's assembly in Putrajaya yesterday (July 24). He went on to explain that for a poor household with two adult children and a married couple, the cash assistance would total RM400 which when combined with the existing Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR), the amount could increase to as much as RM700. '… so don't trivialise these efforts because this is what we (the government) can do to add to the existing allocation from RM13bil to RM15bil,' added PMX. I ASKED a billionaire Tan Sri through WhatsApp the following question: 'Apologies. Seriously what do you plan to do with the RM100 SARA (Sumbangan Asas Rahmah) cash aid the Prime Minister gave?' He answered with two emojis; a thumbs up and thank you. RM100 isn't much considering that he is worth more than RM3 bil, according to Forbes. The richest of them all – Robert Kuok Hock Nien – is worth RM48.8 bil. Love to see media coverage of Robert Kuok Hock Nien and other billionaires, pushing shopping carts to buy RM100 worth of groceries – either for themselves or to be donated to the poor. This would certainly be an award-winning media coverage. I'm not sure if a recipient is allowed to give his or her MyKad to a trustee to shop on his or her behalf. If this is allowed, the rich who are too bashful to be seen shopping for RM100 worth of groceries at Mydin or Econsave can get their bodyguards or amah (house helpers) to do the shopping for them. This would also be helpful to the old and the invalid who cannot do the shopping themselves. These are the people who are truly entitled to this state-funded sadaqah (voluntary charitable giving in Islam). It would also be beneficial in the long term if recipients are given an option to credit the RM100 into their government-sponsored unit trust like the Amanah Saham Bumiputera (ASB) and Amanah Saham Malaysia (ASM). A digital facility should also be established to enable overseas Malaysians to benefit from this Madani generosity. They can use their RM100 Madani SARA to buy groceries for donation. Or the unclaimed SARA be put in a pool for the benefit of the needy such as residents of charity homes and the homeless. An AI search points to reports indicating an increasing trend of elderly parents being abandoned by their children in our country. This includes cases of parents being left at hospitals, care centres or even religious institutions with little to no support from their families. Being thankful has multiplier effect — Hafiz Hassan
JULY 25 — I took A-Level Economics 40 years ago. A topic that has stayed with me since then is the 'multiplier effect'. What is the multiplier effect in economics? The multiplier is the number of times larger the change in income is, compared to the change in net injections that caused it. The multiplier effect states that an initial injection of spending or investment (usually by the government) leads to increased consumption spending and so results in an increase in national income greater than the initial amount of spending. For example, if the government spends a one-off cash aid of RM100 for all Malaysians aged 18 and above, to be used to purchase necessities from over 4,100 outlets including hypermarkets such as Mydin, Lotus, Econsave, and 99 Speedmart, the multiplier effect works by creating a cycle of spending and income. When the cash aid is spent, it creates income for others. The cycle continues as the income generated from the initial spending is spent and re-spent throughout the economy, leading to a larger increase in output than the initial spending alone. The cash aid is one of two main types of multipliers in economics—that is, government spending multipliers. Government spending multipliers refer to the impact of changes in government spending on overall output. The multiplier effect can be a key driver of economic growth, as it can lead to increases in overall output, employment, and incomes. The size of the multiplier effect depends on a variety of factors, and its impact on economic growth will vary depending on the specific circumstances. But I did not pursue economics at tertiary level and I am not an economist. My two-cent is that the cash aid comes with the multiplier effect. Being thankful has the multiplier effect as well. The Quran says: 'And remember when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will certainly give you more. But if you are ungrateful, surely My punishment is severe.' (Surah Ibrahim, verse 7). **This is the personal opinion of the writer or publication and does not necessarily represent the views of Malay Mail.

In dire need of more help
GEORGE TOWN: Some housewives are hoping the government will expand the grocery aid to cover more items and allow larger purchase quantities amid rising living costs. Single mother Fatimah Zahrah Abdul Rahman, 62, said that while the RM100 Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) initiative is helpful, the choices are limited, especially for large families or households with specific dietary needs. She said the aid cannot be used to buy items such as clothing, electronic goods or entertainment products. 'And there is a limit on the quantity of certain products we can buy. We are a big family and may need more than what's allowed under the initiative. 'Things like fresh vegetables, eggs, infant formula and cooking oil are also getting more expensive,' she said. In a special announcement on Wednesday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said to mark Merdeka Day on Aug 31, all Malaysians aged 18 and above will receive a one-off payment of RM100 through their MyKad under the Sara aid programme. Anwar said the assistance will be available from Aug 31 to Dec 31, and can be spent on essential goods at over 4,100 stores nationwide. Participating retailers include major supermarkets such as Mydin, Lotus's, Econsave and 99Speedmart, as well as retail shops in every district across the country. Housewife Kalah Devi Muniandy, 39, said she is grateful that the RM100 aid is distributed to individuals rather than per household, calling it a fairer approach for families with multiple adult members. 'My husband will also receive it, and that gives us RM200 for our family. 'It might not be much to some, but for us, it can cover at least a week's worth of groceries or help pay for our children's needs. 'Essentials like rice, cooking oil and dairy products have become noticeably more expensive these days,' she said. Auditor Alex Kee, 41, said the RM100 grocery aid is a relief for households grappling with the rising cost of living. 'Nowadays, everything including groceries, has become expensive, so it's good that the government is giving something back to the people. 'Even small assistance can go a long way, especially for families with children or elderly dependents,' he said. Food delivery rider S. Ragu, 25, welcomed the reduction for RON95 fuel for Malaysian citizens, calling it a positive move that directly benefits gig economy workers like himself. 'It's a good idea, and it would be great if the government could maintain it for the long term,' he said. He said fuel is one of his daily expenses, adding that even a small drop in price helps him save more every day. In the special announcement, Anwar also said a targeted subsidy for RON95 petrol will be introduced, and that Malaysians will be eligible for a price of RM1.99 per litre once the subsidy is implemented. The initiative will benefit more than 18 million car and motorcycle users, including youth as young as 16 and gig workers.
