It's time to tap out of ‘legacy fares': Sunday is the last day to use TTC tokens, tickets and day passes
Time to gather all your leftover TTC tokens, tickets and day passes — Sunday is the last day you can use them to ride local transit. After decades of service, the 'legacy fares' will no longer be accepted on the TTC after June 1. TTC will then begin exclusively accepting commuters' fares with a physical or digital Presto card, Presto ticket, cash and debit or credit card — including those stored in an Apple or Google Wallet. The transition away from tokens, tickets and day passes comes after the TTC delayed the contentious change, extending the deadline to use the fares by five months — from Dec. 31 to June 1. ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW 'Our customers bought this in good faith,' TTC chair Jamaal Myers said at a December board meeting. 'They paid money for it … I think it's only fair and reasonable just to give customers the opportunity to spend the tickets that they paid for.' Gta TTC tickets and tokens will soon be history. Gta TTC tickets and tokens will soon be history. Here's what they can tell us about the city's past After 70 years, the transit agency is retiring tickets and the dime-sized slugs as payment for fare. The TTC stopped selling the older fares at subway stations in 2019, as the number of customers using them declined. Less than one per cent of riders pay using tokens and tickets, the transit agency said. 'It's clear that most riders have embraced Presto tap-and-ride,' Myers said in an October news release. Here's what you need to know about the change. How can I pay my fare? As a result of this change, the TTC is shifting to exclusively modern fare payments. Riders can still use cash to pay for their fares in station boxes, or on buses and streetcars. Those paying with cash must get a paper transfer from the bus operator or machines on a streetcar and in a subway station for proof of payment. Toronto transit riders can also tap their debit or credit card, including those in their mobile wallet, on a PRESTO reader on a TTC vehicle or a fare gate to pay for their rides. Digital Presto cards can be loaded onto a mobile wallet for free. Complimentary Presto cards are available at select Toronto Public Library branches while supplies last. The cards are set to automatically deduct an adult fare. However, youths, post-secondary students and seniors can set their cards to deduct a specific fare by going to a Shoppers Drug Mart location or TTC's customer service centre and providing government-issued photo identification. When was it decided that the TTC would stop accepting 'legacy fares'? In September, the TTC board endorsed the Fare Compliance Action Plan, tabled in July, which included the recommendation to phase out the use of its 'legacy fares' at the end of 2024. Gta TTC tickets, tokens and day passes get reprieve: Controversial phaseout delayed until June Many riders were surprised by the transit commission's announcement in October that it intended to discontinue the fares as of Jan. 1. After customers brought forth compl aints about the abrupt change, the board voted to give customers a reprieve to use any remaining TTC tickets, tokens or day passes they may have, from Dec 31 to June 1. Following the TTC stopping its sales of the older fares at subway stations in 2019, the transit agency said, third-party retailers also stopped selling TTC tickets in July 2022 and TTC tokens in March 2023. ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW In 2015, the transit agency first announced it would start phasing out tickets and tokens to make way for the Presto card. At the time, the TTC said sales would cease in 2016 and said they would no accept tickets and tokens as fare past mid-2017. Can I get a refund for my unused fares? No refunds, exchange or credit from any unused TTC tickets, tokens or day passes will be available after they are discontinued. Riders also won't be able to transfer the value of old fares to Presto cards, since the two are separate payment systems. With files from Patty Winsa

Smoke from Canadian wildfires has crossed the Atlantic Ocean and is blowing over the U.K.
Smoke from massive wildfires burning in Canada has crossed the Atlantic Ocean and is blowing over the UK. Only a little smoke survived the journey, said Georgie Myers with the UK's Met Office. That smoke is contained in a thin, high-altitude layer and is not expected to have any air quality effects, but it could be noticeable Monday evening and early Tuesday morning. 'No impacts expected as it remains at height, but could lead to some striking sunsets and sunrises,' Myers said. Start your day with a roundup of B.C.-focused news and opinion. The Canadian wildfires have killed two people and forced the evacuation of more than 25,000 people from the provinces of Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Alberta. The plume of smoke from the blazes, dozens of which are burning out of control, triggered health alerts and darkened skies as it spread south across the U.S. It's not unusual for smoke from wildfires across the Atlantic to reach the UK, Myers said. Canada's wildfires are a major source of global greenhouse gases, with an outbreak in 2023 releasing more planet-warming emissions than all but a few countries, research found. Five key stats in Auburn's win over Central Connecticut State
Five key stats in Auburn's win over Central Connecticut State Five key stats were key to the Tigers 9-5 win on Friday night. The Auburn Tigers defeated the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils 9-5 on Friday night to start the NCAA Baseball Tournament. It was a packed house at Plainsman Park that saw the Tigers take the victory. The game was not easy, though. Auburn got off to a 4-0 start, but starting pitcher Cam Tilly had struggles early before being relieved. Tilly allowed two runs before being relieved by Carson Myers in the second inning. The four runs scored by the Tigers proved to be the difference. Auburn will now play Stetson on Saturday at 8 p.m. CT. Here are five key statistics that were key to the Auburn victory on Friday night. Cam Tilly Struggles Even though Tilly did not give up any runs in the first inning, it was a struggle for the starting pitcher. The Blue Devils were able to load the bases before Auburn escaped without giving up any runs. He gave up two runs in the second before giving way to Myers. The Blue Devils started the second inning when outfielder Gianno Merlonghi singled to right field. Tilly would then walk Antonio Ducatelli and Kyle Gordon to make the bases loaded. Catcher Matt Falk would then single to drive in Ducatelli and Merlonghi to make the score 4-2 in favor of Auburn. Tilly would then give way to Myers to end his evening on the mound. In less than two innings, Tilly gave up five hits and walked two batters. Four-run First Inning The Auburn bats were needed in the game with Tilly struggling early. They gave the pitchers an early 4-0 lead to help. The Tigers loaded the bases to set everything into motion. Eric Guevara and Cooper McMurray walked, and in between Ike Irish hit a double. Singles by Lucas Steele, Eric Snow, and Bub Terrell resulted in runs scored and a 4-0 lead. Carson Myers Settles In Myers pitched six innings after coming in relief for Tilly. He faced 27 batters and struck out nine in the game. He did allow six hits but only gave up one run. "I thought when Carson got in the ball game, he just got better and better each inning. And I thought he was a huge difference in the ball game tonight, to steady us, let us reset, settle into the tempo of the game," said Butch Thompson after the game. Parker Carlson would enter the game in the eighth inning to close the game. Lucas Steele Home Run The game was tied at four as the Tigers were up to bat in the third inning. Steele would hit a home run to give Auburn a lead they would never give up. "Yeah, I mean, I think I was leading off the inning, and at that point it was just to get base runners on," said Steele following the game. "The intention was to never hit a home run, but, you know, I got that pitch, and I guess it was a big momentum change to be able to take that lead and keep that lead throughout the game." Auburn would then add three more runs by Eric Snow, Chase Fralick, and Bub Terrell to end the inning up 8-4. Bub Terrell's Big Game Bub Terrell had a big game for the Tigers on Friday night. Terrell had two hits and three RBIs to help led Auburn to a win. He also scored a run and reached base by a walk. His final run batted in was when he flied out in the fourth that resulted in Snow scoring a run.
