Nissan Turns Its Ultra-Comfortable Seats Into Office Furniture
Nissan Turns Its Ultra-Comfortable Seats Into Office Furniture originally appeared on Autoblog. Nissan is in trouble and, to save money, is reportedly trying to sell its headquarters in Yokohama, Japan . Movements in the U.S. have also led the automaker to scrap its most affordable model. But the Japanese automaker isn't giving up yet, particularly in one of the world's largest automotive markets: China. At the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show, Nissan unveiled its latest EV, the N7, to entice Chinese customers. Made in collaboration with Dongfeng as part of a joint venture, the Nissan Altima-sized N7 is a critical model for the marque. Japanese automakers are currently under pressure from the surge in popularity of homegrown EV makers. Of note, Nissan's sales in the People's Republic have slumped by 12% in 2024. But the Nissan N7 has another feature in that's rather unique. It touts the most comfortable car seats in the world, so much so that the company has turned them into office chairs. According to Nikkei Asia, Nissan's decision to produce office furniture based on the N7's seats was due to customer feedback, with Nissan's seats described as "comfortable as a sofa." Called the "AI Zero Pressure Cloud Cushion Seat," the chair was originally developed to be used as the driver and front passenger seats of the Nissan N7 EV. Supported by artificial intelligence, the chair is equipped with 49 smart sensors that adjust pressure based on the user's body shape and posture. It also has heated seat capability. Now that's an office chair we'd love to have. Measuring 63 inches tall, 29.1 inches wide, and 31.5 inches deep, the Nissan office chair's cushion can extend up to 2.4 inches for maximum comfort. It can be controlled via a smartphone app, and operates while plugged in or on battery. Full charge lasts five hours. In 2016, the automaker revealed an office chair that can park itself, as part of Nissan's promotion of its Intelligent Mobility suite of smart vehicle technologies. However, this will be the first time the company will sell office furniture directly to the public. Available via Dongfeng Nissan's official app in China, the AI Zero Pressure Cloud Cushion Seat has a price tag of 9,888 yuan, or approximately $1,372 at current exchange rates. Whether the chairs are sold outside of China remains to be seen. China's BYD gains ground in Sri Lanka's auto market
COLOMBO, May 27 (Xinhua) -- BYD, a Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) maker, is expanding its footprint in Sri Lanka with plans to introduce DENZA, its premium luxury brand, through local distributor John Keells CG Auto. This was revealed at a press conference held here on Tuesday. Representatives of BYD and John Keells signed an MoU to facilitate DENZA's entry into the local market, showing their ambition to expand Sri Lanka's high-end electric vehicles. DENZA, established in 2010, focuses on luxurious new energy vehicles. Its current lineup includes premium models such as the D9, N7, Z9, and Z9GT, promising Sri Lankan consumers a fully optimized travel experience. Speaking at the event, Krishan Balendra, chairperson of the John Keells Group, said BYD's rapid success in Sri Lanka's NEV segment "reflects the strength of our partnership and our shared vision for the future of mobility." "The upcoming introduction of DENZA marks the beginning of yet another exciting chapter -- bringing premium NEV experiences to local customers," he said. Since Sri Lanka eased import restrictions in early 2025, BYD has swiftly captured consumer interest with a range of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Increasing demand for BYD vehicles shows the growing consumer shift toward new energy mobility in Sri Lanka. To further cement its market presence, BYD and John Keells CG Auto are rapidly expanding their showroom and after-sales networks. New showrooms are set to open soon in Ampara and Ratnapura in Sri Lanka's Eastern and Sabaragamuwa provinces, respectively. These new showrooms augment existing locations in Colombo, Galle, Kandy, and Kurunegala, four of the most populous cities in the country. Concurrently, after-sales service centers are also expanding into key locations such as Kandy, Galle, Kurunegala, Ratnapura, and Ampara, ensuring robust support for customers nationwide. Liu Xueliang, general manager of BYD Asia-Pacific Auto Sales Division, said Sri Lanka is a key market for BYD in South Asia. "While the scale of business in Sri Lanka is not on the same level as other markets we have entered in the region, Sri Lanka's size means that it can still serve as a global case study for the positive impacts of electric mobility on a national scale." Both companies have also planned to establish a regional training center, aimed at building technical capabilities locally. This aligns with their broader vision of enhancing the accessibility of NEVs, catering comprehensively from entry-level vehicles to premium luxury segments, shaping Sri Lanka's journey towards sustainable automotive solutions.

Nissan announces accelerated China push
Nissan's N7 electric sedan, produced with Chinese partner Dongfeng, promises a range of up to 635 kilometres (395 miles) and customisable lighting Japanese auto giant Nissan on Wednesday announced the launch of two models aimed at picking up speed in its key market of China, where it has been outpaced by local rivals. At industry show Auto Shanghai, the group announced an investment of 10 billion yuan ($1.4 billion) into China, and said it would increase the number of new models it planned to launch by summer 2027 to 10, up from eight. The group's China chief, Stephen Ma, told a press conference the aim was to match Chinese competitors, and that Nissan had been slow in approaching the market with new models. "We were not at the same speed, mainly because the Chinese brands were exceptional with speed," Ma said. With fewer than 800,000 vehicles sold, in the 2023 financial year Nissan's sales fell by 24.1 percent in China, the world's leading car market. The company is struggling on several fronts, with fragile accounts and an aborted merger attempt with Honda exacerbated by the tariff turmoil affecting its biggest market, the United States. The group's renewed China offensive was on display at its booth on Wednesday, in the hulking form of the Frontier Pro truck. It is Nissan's first plug-in hybrid vehicle, and designed to appeal to Chinese consumers' tastes. The N7 electric sedan, meanwhile, produced with local partner Dongfeng, promises a range of up to 635 kilometers, customisable lighting and advanced driving assistance systems. Nissan also plans to export the two models outside of China "in less than a year", Ma said, without specifying where -- other than not to the United States. © 2025 AFP

Japan's Nissan looks to export China-made electric cars in global expansion push
Japanese carmaker Nissan Motor is looking to expand in the global market with made-in-China electric vehicles (EVs) featuring smart driving technologies, highlighting its commitment to the Chinese market, a company executive said on Wednesday. Advertisement 'The Chinese market is leading a lot of technology investment, so of course we want to stay and compete,' Stephen Ma, chairperson of Nissan's management committee for China, said during an interview at the Shanghai Auto Show on Wednesday. China and the US are two of Nissan's largest markets, he added. The company displayed two new vehicles at the event: an electric sedan called the N7, from its Chinese joint venture Dongfeng Nissan, and the Frontier Pro, a plug-in hybrid electric pickup truck from Zhengzhou Nissan. The new models are part of a broader effort to roll out 10 ' new-energy vehicles ' (NEVs) – referring primarily to pure electric and hybrid cars – by the summer of 2027. Nissan increased its target from eight, which it had previously planned to release by the end of the 2026 financial year. The Nissan N7 electric car displayed during the Shanghai Auto Show.
