Liberia: 'Hepatitis Can't Wait' as Ministry of Health (MOH) Rallies Public for Testing, Awareness During World Hepatitis Day
The Ministry of Health, through the National AIDS Control Program (NACP), on Monday, July 28, 2025, kicked off a nationwide hepatitis-B awareness and testing campaign in observance of World Hepatitis Day. This year's event is celebrated under the global theme 'Hepatitis: Let's Break It Down,' with a slogan ' Hepatitis Can't Wait.' The campaign began today with simultaneous and massive free testing at the Ministry of Health in Congo Town, the Ministerial Complex, and the NACP office at John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Sinkor. It seeks to raise awareness, encourage early testing and treatment, and highlight the deadly impact of viral Hepatitis, particularly Hepatitis B and C, on Liberians, especially young people. Speaking at the launch of the campaign on Monday, Assistant Minister for Preventive Services, Dr. Cuallau Jabbeh-Howe, issued a passionate appeal to the public to embrace testing as a first step toward defeating the disease. 'We are here today for a very important program. We are celebrating World Hepatitis Week, and today, July 28, is being observed globally as World Hepatitis Day, ' Dr. Howe emphasized. She continued, 'It is good for you to know your status so you can better plan and know how to take good care of yourself. Don't get ill unknowingly. It is always good to know your health status.' Dr. Howe warned against the dangerous culture of health denial and silence in Liberia. 'A lot of us don't want to know our status, which is very bad and dangerous. If you don't know, you won't be able to plan properly, and you won't have someone to treat you properly. That's why today, we are calling upon you to do your free testing so that you can be advised on how to move forward.' According to her, Hepatitis is emerging as a major killer disease in Liberia, with young people most at risk. 'Hepatitis is silently killing many of our young people and is now becoming one of the top killers in Liberia. So please, get tested. Know your status. Call your family. Share the word,' she urged. In continuation of the campaign, free Hepatitis B testing will last up to the 31st of July 2025 at the Ministerial Complex in Congo Town, targeting civil servants, government employees, and the general public. Health workers will be stationed on the grounds to provide testing, counseling, and basic information about Hepatitis B prevention and treatment. The week-long commemoration is not just about testing, but also about breaking the silence and breaking down stigma, which aligns with this year's national slogan, 'Let's Break it Down.' The Ministry hopes to demystify Hepatitis B by educating citizens about its symptoms, transmission routes, prevention methods, and treatment options. World Hepatitis Day is recognized every year on July 28 to honor the birthday of Nobel Prize-winning scientist Dr. Baruch Blumberg, who discovered the Hepatitis B virus and developed the first vaccine for it. The day is used to intensify global and national efforts toward Hepatitis elimination, which the World Health Organization (WHO) aims to achieve by 2030. KAPs urged to boost anti-corruption promotion efforts in Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR: Heads of lead agencies (KAP) tasked with implementing the National Anti-Corruption Strategy (NACS) 2024-2028 have been urged to intensify the promotion and publicity of their respective achievements in combating corruption. Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) National Governance Planning Division senior director Datuk Idris Zaharudin said the move was important to demonstrate the government's commitment to continuously improving governance, combating corruption, and fostering a positive perception among the public at both national and international levels. He said that during the NACS Performance Coordination Meetings held on Nov 11, 2024, and June 10 this year, MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki had underscored the need for greater promotion and publicity. According to him, NACS, like the National Anti-Corruption Plan (NACP), was recognised as one of the contributing factors in enhancing Malaysia's ranking in the Corruption Perception Index (CPI), in line with the aspirations of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar. 'The establishment of the CPI Special Task Force, chaired by Shamsul Azri, is a positive step towards monitoring and improving the country's score, while also reflecting continuous efforts by all parties, not just the MACC, to combat corruption effectively and restore public confidence in government institutions,' he said while chairing the Joint Engagement Session with 19 KAPs here on Tuesday (July 22). Meanwhile, Idris said the MACC chief commissioner had congratulated nine KAPs, including the commission itself, for successfully completing the implementation of 10 sub-strategies under their respective scopes of responsibility. 'Five sub-strategies were successfully completed in 2024, while the remaining five were completed by 30 June,' he said. On July 9, Idris chaired the CPI Special Task Force Pre-Council Meeting in preparation for the main meeting, which was chaired by the Chief Secretary to the Government on July 15. The meeting on 15 July was also attended by Azam and members of the CPI Special Task Force, comprising secretaries-general of ministries, heads of departments and government agencies, as well as representatives from Transparency International Malaysia (TI-M) and appointed experts. - Bernama

Kelantan to launch integrity units at all local councils
KOTA BHARU: The Kelantan government has announced plans to establish Integrity Units across all local councils as part of efforts to improve governance and foster a culture of integrity within the state's public service. Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Dr Mohamed Fadzli Hassan confirmed the decision, stating it follows a resolution from the National Governance Committee Meeting (Series 4, No.1/2025) and was approved during the State Executive Council Meeting on Feb 5. 'The initiative is an extension of the Kelantan Anti-Corruption Plan (KACP) 2020–2024, which mirrors the National Anti-Corruption Plan (NACP) 2019–2023,' he said. The plan emphasises service delivery based on Ubudiyyah (servitude), Mas'uliyyah (accountability), and Itqan (excellence). Dr Mohamed Fadzli also revealed that the state is preparing to introduce the Kelantan Anti-Corruption Strategies (KACS), aligned with the National Anti-Corruption Strategies (NACS) 2024–2028. He made the remarks while responding to a question from Saizol Ismail (PAS–Salor) regarding the state's policies on integrity and professionalism among civil servants during the Kelantan State Legislative Assembly session at the Kota Darulnaim Complex. - Bernama

Public-private collaboration key to fight corruption in Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR: Combating corruption requires a united commitment from both public institutions and private enterprises to foster integrity and resilient governance, said Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki. He emphasised that while the government enforces regulations, the private sector can support anti-corruption efforts through technological advancements, data sharing, and operational resources. 'Efforts to combat corruption demand continuous commitment, unwavering integrity, and joint action,' he stated. Azam made these remarks during the opening of a workshop titled 'Advancing Integrity Together: Public-Private Partnership for Inclusive Anti-Corruption Reforms', organised by MACC and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). The event saw participation from representatives of Brunei, Denmark, Laos, Mongolia, Myanmar, Saudi Arabia, and Oman. Malaysia has shown progress in its anti-corruption drive, with its Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) ranking improving to 57th in 2023 from 61st in 2022. Azam attributed this to the National Anti-Corruption Plan (NACP) 2019-2023, which achieved a 77% implementation rate, completing 85 out of 111 initiatives. To sustain this momentum, MACC introduced the National Anti-Corruption Strategy (NACS) 2024-2028, featuring five core strategies: Education, Public Accountability, People's Voice, Enforcement, and Incentives, supported by 60 sub-strategies. Azam also highlighted reforms such as adopting artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain for investigations and monitoring to counter increasingly sophisticated corruption methods. 'Cooperation with UNODC is crucial to advancing the global anti-corruption framework, particularly in corporate liability and cross-border collaboration,' he added. The event was attended by Rasidah Abdul Karim, director of MACC's Policy, Planning and Research Division, and Annika Wythes, team lead of UNODC's Anti-Corruption Hub for Southeast Asia and the Pacific. - Bernama
