Shane Van Gisbergen Takes Jab at Red Bull Over Liam Lawson Demotion

Gisbergen got his maiden win in Mexico over the past weekend after struggling in his first full-time NASCAR Cup Series season. He only made the top ten once in the first 15 races. He struggled to adapt to the ovals that feature so prominently in the American racing series. Photo byGisbergen - a New Zealander sponsored by Red Bull - started in pole position in the Mexico City Cup Series race. His win was anything but smooth; he battled shifting conditions due to the inconsistent rain and a never-ending series of caution flags. Despite all of the challenges, Gisbergen managed to pull off the win, staying calm, cool, and collected throughout the race. After his landmark win, he thanked Trackhouse Racing for their continued support of him despite his struggles. He made a cheeky remark about the support he received during his downturn in form, comparing it to what Red Bull offered fellow New Zealander Liam Lawson. "I'm glad I didn't drive for Red Bull F1 after how the first few rounds went," van Gisbergen joked after the race. "[Team boss] Justin [Marks] has been amazing, supporting me and just giving me all the time I need and not putting pressure on [me]. It's been really cool." Red Bull's F1 team decided to axe Lawson after only two races, a drastic decision that followed a series of underwhelming results. When Lawson made an Instagram post back in March about his removal from Red Bull, van Gisbergen left a message under the post saying, "Prove em Wrong!" The 36-year-old New Zealander mentored his fellow countryman and backed Lawson through different racing series. While trying to make it in America, van Gisbergen still monitored Lawson's progress. "The way he's gotten to F1 has been a little difficult the last couple of years. But seeing him get this opportunity full-time now, I'm just stoked and so proud," he said back in December. "You've got to be versatile, which is something I've always tried to do by driving a bunch of different cars. It helps you when it comes to something new in the setup, something technical, or even with the weather changing. You've got to be able to adapt straight away. "Liam's been exceptional at that. Even when F1 wasn't working out, he did DTM and other racing that I think has really helped him."

NASCAR Cup Series Driver Sells Mansion for 3 Times Its Cost in $12.2M Deal

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. NASCAR Cup Series driver Ricky Stenhouse Jr. has sold his 9,100 square foot estate in Mooresville, North Carolina, for an impressive $12.2 million, which is nearly three times the amount he paid for it in 2013. Stenhouse Jr. has been making news lately, especially after his second clash with Carson Hocevar in Mexico. The Hyak Motorsports driver threatened Hocevar for making contact during the race. However, things appear to be going smoothly for Stenhouse Jr. off the race track. The Wall Street Journal broke the news of Stenhouse Jr.'s real estate sale near Lake Norman, an area where several NASCAR drivers reside due to the close proximity to Charlotte Motor Speedway. Before Stenhouse Jr., the property was owned by NASCAR drivers Ernie Irvan and Joe Nemechek. MoreAfter making the purchase in 2013 for $3.8 million, Stenhouse Jr. and his family made changes to the property's backyard, adding two swimming pools and a cabana. However, with the property already sold, it is reported that Stenhouse Jr. and his wife, Madyson Stenhouse, have purchased land next to the previously owned property, spanning 160 acres, where they plan to build a house. The reason for the real estate sale is not known, but it is noteworthy that the property was offered for sale in 2022 for $15.995 million. According to Josh Tucker of Corcoran HM Properties, a buyer made a strong offer for cash that was difficult for the Stenhouses to refuse. The buyer's identity remains hidden, but it is confirmed that he is not a NASCAR driver. Speaking of Lake Norman, NASCAR champion Martin Truex Jr.'s private European-style home has been on sale in the same area for $7.5 million. The approximately 14,000 square foot property sits on a 4.82-acre land parcel. Listed on Zillow, the property features 5 bedrooms and 9 baths. There's also plenty of space for parking cars and a garage to work on them. Not to forget a gym, theater, custom bar, and game area, or the infinity pool and a private dock with a boat lift outside. Newsweek Sports reported the listing, which stated: "Home to NASCAR champion Martin Truex Jr., this private European-style estate on Lake Norman offers over 14,000 sq ft of luxury living on almost 5 gated, waterfront acres. A tree-lined drive leads to a stunning main house, carriage house with guest apartment, and expansive workshop/garage. "The main home features a grand living room with soaring ceilings and lake views, a chef's kitchen, formal dining, and a main-level primary suite with a spa bath and 2-story closet. Upstairs offers en-suite guest rooms and a second office with a loft. The finished basement includes a custom bar, theater, gym, and game area. Outside, enjoy a resort-style infinity pool, waterfall, fire pit, and private dock with boat lift. "A detached garage with finished space above adds even more flexibility. This home is perfect for a car enthusiast, with ample amount of garage spaces and workshop. An entertainer's dream and rare waterfront offering—experience luxury lake living with a championship pedigree."

Richard Petty Slams Road Courses and Playoff Gimmicks: 'Not Really NASCAR'

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Seven-time Cup Series champion Richard Petty has taken a bold stance against the sport's "if you win, you're in" policy while admitting that road courses are "not really NASCAR." The NASCAR Hall of Famer's statements arrive after an eventful race weekend in Mexico City, where Shane van Gisbergen dominated the Cup Series race at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez circuit and secured victory with a lead of 16.5 seconds over runner-up Christopher Bell. In addition, van Gisbergen got lucky by securing a spot in the Cup Series playoffs since he won the race in Mexico. This, despite being ranked 30th in the standings. Petty called out this system and stressed that NASCAR will have to consider changing this rule. MorePetty argued that securing a place in the playoffs, despite being 30th in the standings, all because of a race win, doesn't do justice to drivers way above in the championship standings without a Cup Series victory. In addition, Petty admitted that he doesn't acknowledge road courses to be pure NASCAR. While there might not be much the sport could do about the second point, it could look into changing the way drivers secure their place in the playoffs. Petty revealed his point while answering a question sent by one of his fans on X. The question was, "How do you feel about a guy who is 30th in points automatically qualifying for the championship?" Petty preferred to answer through a video. He said: "The way they got this thing fixed, where if you win, you're in. That can't be right. You got somebody that's 30th in points that's going to make the playoffs. Hey man, what happened to the guy that 15th, or 16th, or 18th (that's) been running good (and) finished good everywhere? "You're making a championship situation by winning a road course, which is not really NASCAR to begin with. From that standpoint, I think they're going to have to jockey around and change some of this kind of stuff." FAN QUESTION: How do you feel about a guy who is 30th in points automatically qualifying for the championship? Via Facebook user, Ronald Rhine. Full Race Recap and more answers to fan questions tomorrow at 8am on the Petty Family Racing YouTube channel. — Richard Petty (@therichardpetty) June 16, 2025 On the subject of the Mexico race, van Gisbergen revealed that he approached four-time Formula One world champion Max Verstappen for his advice ahead of the race weekend. Verstappen is a five-time race winner at Mexico, making him the perfect source to know the fastest way around the circuit. Newsweek Sports reported van Gisbergen's comments after the race. He said: "I just look for every advantage I can. I know he's raced here in the rain and he's a friend of mine, and I walked out on to pit road this morning and it was amazing how slick it was. "Normally on a wet circuit the tarmac has grip and the white lines are slipperier. It was the opposite. It was like ice how slippery it was out there."

NASCAR Insiders In Agreement On Mexico City Location

NASCAR Insiders In Agreement On Mexico City Location originally appeared on The Spun. NASCAR heads back to the United States after a trip to Mexico City. The first Mexico race may not be the last. Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez hosted Xfinity Series and Cup Series events over the weekend. Two insiders wouldn't be surprised if NASCAR returns to Mexico City next year. Advertisement The Athletic's Jordan Bianchi and Jeff Gluck considered NASCAR's future relationship with Mexico City on The Teardown podcast. "While there are things that need to be tightened up on some levels, and there are certainly some first-year kinks that went wrong, there is every reason to continue this and to think that this is going to come back for another year," Bianchi said (h/t On3). "As it should. This was a popular event. The crowd here was strong." Gluck spoke to NASCAR fans from Mexico who cried and lost their voices watching Daniel Suárez win the Xfinity Series race. The outcome was a "big deal" that NASCAR can use to generate more interest for a return. He also noted that NASCAR would benefit from lowering the starting price point. The cheapest tickets cost $60 in U.S. currency. Advertisement "It's something to build on and something to grow on," Gluck said. "It's a huge F1 track. I wasn't expecting an F1 crowd, but I was expecting more than we saw today. But again, this is the first step." (Photo by)They're not the only ones anticipating a return. Bianchi wrote Tuesday that most NASCAR crews expect to race in Mexico City next year. NASCAR must work out some logistical obstacles, such as teams wanting an off week before the trip. They traveled across the border last week after a race at Pocono. However, the inaugural Mexico City race was largely viewed as a success. "For NASCAR to truly cash in on its sizable investment, it would be a mistake not to build off the foothold that it has established over the past nine months since first announcing the race," Bianchi wrote. "The consensus is NASCAR needs at least one international race each season. And after the past week, Mexico City should be atop that list of options." Advertisement Ben Kennedy, NASCAR's executive vice president and primary schedule maker, said he's "very hopeful" NASCAR will return to Mexico City. "Today wasn't just a race," Kennedy said. "This was a historic moment for our sport, for Mexico, and for the global motorsports community. One of the coolest parts about this weekend was seeing the reaction of the fans. I had the opportunity to go into the stands a few times, and the energy and the passion of the fans here is unmatched."
