Rural roots market launched to empower Manipur women

1 2 Imphal: In a strategic move to empower women and eliminate middlemen, the Manipur State Rural Livelihoods Mission (MSRLM) has launched its inaugural 'Rural Roots Market' at Leimapokpam Makha Leikai Community Hall, Nambol, Bishnupur. This initiative, under the department of rural development & panchayati raj, aims to enable self-help group (SHG) members to sell their products directly to consumers at wholesale prices. The market, hosted by the Senmitlon Sinnai Village Level Federation, saw participation from the public. N Bandana Devi, secretary of skill, labour, employment & entrepreneurship and state mission director of MSRLM, highlighted the market as a long-awaited dream come true. She emphasised the platform's role in allowing SHG members to engage directly with customers, thereby improving product quality and design to meet consumer demands. Devi proposed that such markets should be held monthly, especially in high-traffic areas like highways, to maximize reach and reduce unsold inventory by better aligning supply with demand. The market showcased a variety of products, including handloom and handicraft items, clothing, jute bags, vegetables, and local delicacies. SHG members shared personal stories of how joining these groups has boosted their confidence and allowed them to contribute significantly to their families. The event was also attended by divisional forest officer Waikhom Romabai and Mutum Bebina Devi, president of Senmitlon Sinnai VLF, who presided over the function.
