Perhilitan installs LED signs to prevent elephant accidents at wildlife crossings
TEMERLOH: The Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) has installed light-emitting diode (LED) signboards at several locations identified as wildlife crossing points to reduce the risk of road accidents involving elephants. Perhilitan director-general Datuk Abdul Kadir Abu Hashim said the initiative was launched in response to the increasing number of wild elephant deaths caused by collisions with vehicles in high-risk areas. He explained that the LED signs flash as a warning to road users, prompting them to slow down when approaching known wildlife crossing zones. "So far, the signs have been installed in areas such as Ulu Muda in Kedah, as well as Gerik and Jertih in Terengganu. "We are also using similar signs along Persiaran Mokhtar Dahari in Selangor to protect tapirs," he said. He made the remarks during the 2025 World Elephant Day celebration held at the National Elephant Conservation Centre (NECC) in Kuala Gandah, Lanchang. Abdul Kadir added that rapid development has significantly reduced elephant habitats, forcing the animals to venture into villages, plantations, and farms in search of food, mates, and water sources. He said Perhilitan continues to carry out operations to capture and relocate elephants to more suitable habitats such as Taman Negara Tasik Kenyir, which spans the states of Pahang, Terengganu, and Kelantan. "In Johor alone, we are targeting to relocate 25 elephants per year. The current elephant population in Peninsular Malaysia is estimated to be between 1,500 and 1,800," he said. He also reminded the public not to take matters into their own hands if they encounter an elephant, but instead, to immediately contact the nearest Perhilitan office.
