NEET PG 2025 in one shift: Supreme Court trashes the two-shift format, slams it as arbitrary and unfair

In a significant ruling aimed at ensuring fairness and transparency, the Supreme Court of India has directed that the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for Postgraduate (NEET-PG) 2025 be conducted in a single shift, instead of the previously planned two shifts. The decision comes in response to a petition that highlighted the potential for unfairness and inconsistencies in a two-shift format. The Supreme Court bench noted that conducting NEET-PG in multiple shifts could lead to discrepancies in the level of difficulty across different sessions, thereby creating a sense of arbitrariness and unfairness among candidates. The Court stated that for an exam of such national importance, uniformity in standards is essential. The Court's order comes after petitioners argued that NEET-PG has traditionally been a single-shift, single-day examination, a format that ensures all candidates are assessed under the same conditions. The NEET-PG 2025 examination is scheduled to be held on June 15, 2025. NBE to rework logistics for single-shift exam Following the Supreme Court's directive, the National Board of Examinations (NBE), the body responsible for conducting NEET-PG, will need to make logistical adjustments to accommodate all candidates in a single shift. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Has Honda Done It Again? 2 Shifts Create "Arbitrariness": Supreme Court On NEET-PG 2025 Exam Schedule

NEET PG Supreme Court hearing: The Supreme Court has directed that National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), a national-level entrance exam for admission to undergraduate medical courses, should be conducted in one shift instead of two. The top court was hearing a petition challenging a notification on holding NEET-PG 2025 examination in two shifts. The court said that holding the exam in two shifts "creates arbitrariness" and directed National Testing Agency (NTA) to make arrangements for holding the exam in one shift. The NEET-PG exam is scheduled to be held on June 15. "The question papers in two shifts can never be of the same difficulty level. Last year, it (NEET-PG 2024) may have been held in two shifts in the facts and circumstances of that stage. But the examining body ought to have considered making arrangements for holding the examination in one shift," the bench headed by Justice Vikram Nath, and also comprising Justices Sanjay Kumar and N V Anjaria, observed while giving the judgement. It asked the NTA to ensure complete transparency in holding the exam. The result of the computer-based exam is expected to be declared on July 15. The bench had on May 5 sought a response from the NBE, National Medical Council, and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on the plea. Recently, the top court delivered a verdict issuing a slew of directions to stop seat-blocking in NEET-PG counselling and directed publication of raw scores, answer keys and normalisation formulae of the exam. The plea, challenging the conduct of NEET-PG exam in two shifts, said it has the potential for unfairness due to varying difficulty levels between shifts. It was filed by one Aditi and others.

SC Orders NBE To Conduct NEET-PG 2025 Exam In Single Shift To Ensure Fairness

Last Updated: The Supreme Court has directed NBE to hold NEET-PG 2025 in a single shift, citing fairness and the need for equal difficulty levels. The exam is scheduled for June 15. In a significant order aimed at ensuring fairness and transparency, the Supreme Court on Thursday directed the National Board of Examinations (NBE) to conduct the NEET-PG 2025 examination in a single shift. The exam is scheduled to be held on June 15. The top court said that conducting the postgraduate medical entrance test in two shifts could lead to arbitrariness and affect the level playing field for aspirants. A bench comprising Justice Vikram Nath, Justice Sanjay Kumar, and Justice N.K. Anjaria passed the order while hearing a batch of petitions challenging the National Board of Examinations' (NBE) decision to conduct the NEET-PG 2025 examination in two shifts. 'Conducting the exam in two shifts results in arbitrariness and fails to provide a level playing field. The question papers across two shifts can never match in terms of difficulty. While last year it may have been held in two shifts due to specific circumstances at that time, the examining body should have made efforts to arrange for the examination to be held in a single shift this year," the Court observed in the order. Rejecting the NBE's argument that insufficient centres were available to conduct the exam in a single shift, the Court observed: 'We are not ready to accept that in entire country and considering the technological advancements in this country, the examining body could not find enough centres to hold the examination and one shift." Noting that more than two weeks remain before the exam date, the Supreme Court said the NBE has sufficient time to identify secure and credible exam centres to facilitate holding the test in a single shift. The court also directed the examining body to maintain full transparency and ensure proper arrangements are made for a smooth conduct of the examination. This directive comes amid growing concerns among medical aspirants regarding the fairness of holding high-stakes exams like NEET-PG in multiple shifts, with varying levels of difficulty across question papers. In 2024, the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) announced the NEET PG results on August 23. Shortly thereafter, many candidates raised concerns about discrepancies in their results, alleging that improper normalisation had led to unexpectedly low ranks. Numerous aspirants cross-checked their answers with unofficial keys released by coaching institutes and pointed out inconsistencies, which further fuelled dissatisfaction with the multi-shift system.
