Texans' Derek Stingley Jr. named NFL's top three cornerback by coaches, execs and scouts

How good is Houston Texans All-Pro cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. following his breakout season last fall? Let's just say NFL coaches, executives and personnel members think only the reigning Defensive Player of the Year is better than him entering 2025. ESPN polled talent evaluators from around the league on the top 10 cornerbacks entering training camp. Denver Broncos star Patrick Surtain II garnered the top spot following a record-setting season under Sean Payton's defense. Trailing close behind was Stingley, who received several votes for the No. 1 spot, but also ranked as low as No. 4. "Best ball skills in the league, in my opinion," an NFC personnel evaluator told ESPN. "Some of the INTs and tracking the ball in the air, it's rare. That pick against Tyreek [Hill], 99% of DBs in league aren't making that play." Last season, Stingley set the standard in a top-10 secondary en route to helping Houston clinch a second AFC South division title. He finished second in pass breakups (18), sixth in interceptions (5) and allowed the second-lowest completion percentage among cornerbacks with at least 200 coverage snaps (46.7%), according to NFL Next Gen Stats. Houston knew losing Stingley wasn't an option, so it negotiated a new three-year extension worth $90 million this offseason to keep him around through 2029. At $30 million annually, he became the highest-paid defensive back in league history before the New York Jets inked Sauce Gardner, the 2022 No. 4 overall pick, to a four-year, $120.4 million extension earlier this month. While Gardner will earn more over four years, Stingley's $30 million annual salary remains the second-highest in league history. The difference? His $89 million guaranteed is still the highest-paid in total money. "He's physical, a lot thicker than he looks, movement skills explosive," an NFC assistant coach said. "He has always had this in his game; he just had a slow start to his career due to injury." As the Texans' No. 1 corner, Stingley gave up just 4.9 yards per target while allowing 42 completions on 90 targets. Opposing quarterbacks produced a 56.9 passer rating against him, which led all corners with at least 50 targets. In three seasons, Stingley's 31 pass breakups and 10 interceptions rank top five among all defensive backs. The Texans return to practice on Wednesday for the start of training camp.

Five Critical Questions as New York Giants Enter Make-or-Break Training Camp

We're just days away from the New York Giants reporting to training camp to prepare for the 2025 NFL season. This will be the fourth season of the Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll regime, and there's tremendous pressure on the duo after finishing 3-14 a season ago and setting a franchise record for losses in a season. On paper, Big Blue should be significantly better with the upgrades made this offseason. However, some believe they'll finish last in the NFC East, while others think the Giants could be one of this season's surprise teams. Numerous questions surround the franchise ahead of training camp, and here's our list of the top five. Will Russell Wilson still play at a high level? The biggest addition this offseason was signing 10-time Pro Bowl quarterback Russell Wilson to a one-year deal. Wilson has the fourth-best touchdown-to-interception ratio in NFL history, and many believe he's Hall of Fame-bound. But some question whether, at age 36 and playing on his third team in three seasons, he can still perform at an elite level. We'll have to see how much he plays in the preseason, but if Wilson is still performing at a high level and maintains his three-to-one touchdown-to-interception ratio, New York may have a winning season. Is Andrew Thomas' foot fully healed? Andrew Thomas is one of the best left tackles in the league, but has only played in 16 games over the last two seasons. A foot injury put an abrupt end to his season last year after just six games. He's coming off foot surgery and recently, there's been speculation that he may not be ready for the start of the season. But the 6-foot-5, 315-pound tackle seemed to put fans at ease when he threw out the first pitch at a recent New York Yankees game and wasn't favoring his foot. Now the question is: will he be an active participant when training camp begins? A healthy Thomas will give Wilson more time to find Malik Nabers and pick apart opposing defenses, making the offense more explosive. Can Abdul Carter make Giants' front seven best in league? The Giants took Abdul Carter with the third pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, and immediately speculation began on how dominant the front seven could be this year. Carter was widely considered the best pass rusher in college, and now he'll play alongside Dexter Lawrence, Kayvon Thibodeaux, and Brian Burns. Last season, the Giants had 45 sacks despite Lawrence and Thibodeaux missing significant time with injuries, and Burns playing through various ailments. Now with everyone entering camp healthy, New York has the potential to field the best front seven in the league — a recipe for success. How will the team manage Jaxson Dart? The Giants loved what they saw from Jaxson Dart in college, which is why they traded back into the first round to take him with the 25th overall pick. He's without question the franchise's future and will be the starter in 2026, but how he'll be used this year remains a huge question. He'll certainly see significant playing time in the preseason, but it's uncertain if he'll get a chance to supplant Jameis Winston as the number two on the depth chart. Additionally, if the season starts to spiral downward, how long will the organization wait before giving Dart his first NFL start? Aside from wins and losses, the most important objective this season is developing their rookie quarterback and putting Dart in the best position to succeed. What will ownership deem as a successful season? We won't know the answer to this question until after the season, but it will be hovering over the franchise all year. After two consecutive double-digit loss seasons, both Schoen and Daboll are firmly on the hot seat, and the Giants have the toughest strength of schedule in the league. Most believe that for the Schoen/Daboll regime to last beyond this season, the Giants will need to be playing in meaningful games late in the year. Or Dart will need to show steady progress as the season unfolds, proving that Schoen was right to trade up for him. Paying Terry McLaurin big money may seem fair, but it's bad business

Terry McLaurin has been everything an NFL franchise could ask for — a homegrown star who has played through organizational chaos and quarterback futility without complaint, and remained a leader on and off the field. He is also coming off a career year as one of the most impactful wide receivers in the league, having played a huge role in the success of rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels and helping fuel the Washington Commanders' run to the NFC championship game.

Fantasy football burning questions: Dissecting the NFC East

The start of NFL training camps and preseason workouts across the league means the start of fantasy football draft season. USA TODAY Sports is readying up for fantasy season by taking a closer look at each of the league's 32 teams and the biggest fantasy-related questions that surround them. How will new players joining a team affect the offensive balance? Can young players keep up their momentum? How will coaching changes make an impact? On this episode of divisional deep-dives, it's time to take a look at the NFC East. The division contains the reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles, the NFC runners-up Washington Commanders, a Dallas Cowboys team with a new head coach and a New York Giants squad with new young players and an uncertain future. Here are the biggest questions we have about each team in the division: Philadelphia Eagles (2024 record: 14-3) How will the offense look in the post-Kellen Moore era? After a 2-2 start to the season, the Eagles turned everything around offensively after their Week 5 bye. Philadelphia finished the season ranked seventh in the NFL in scoring offense (27.2 points per game) and eighth in average offensive yards (367.2 per game). That was in large part thanks to the switch in offensive focus to the Eagles' run game, led by running back Saquon Barkley and supplemented by quarterback Jalen Hurts, a talented rusher in his own right. The team's 179.3 average rushing yards per game were the most by any NFC team and second in the NFL to the Ravens (187.6). The same key players are back for Philly: Barkley, Hurts and all five offensive line starters. Top pass-catchers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith are back too. But offensive coordinator Kellen Moore left to become the head coach of the New Orleans Saints, and Kevin Patullo, former Eagles passing game coordinator, was promoted to replace him. Whether Patullo will be able to design an offense that gets the most out of its players like Moore did last year (and en route to a Super Bowl win) remains to be seen. Top players (Fantasy Pros ADP) Washington Commanders (12-5) Can Jayden Daniels avoid a sophomore slump? Daniels was the best rookie quarterback in a 2024 draft class that was stacked with talent at the position. He was rewarded for his efforts – in a season with 3,568 passing yards, 25 passing touchdowns, six rushing touchdowns and nine interceptions – with the Offensive Rookie of the Year award and a Pro Bowl nod. In 2025, he'll be looking to avoid the same fate as his immediate OROY predecessor, Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud. Stroud had a stellar rookie season in 2023 but a more forgettable 2024 season that featured fewer passing yards and touchdowns, and more interceptions and incompletions. Daniels led the Commanders to an NFC championship game appearance and painted a target on his back in the process. Receivers Terry McLaurin and Deebo Samuel's production is in the hands of Daniels, who will look to avoid a sophomore slump this season. Top players (Fantasy Pros ADP) NFC NORTH: Fantasy football burning questions Dallas Cowboys (7-10) How will new head coach Brian Schottenheimer deploy Cowboys' CeeDee Lamb/George Pickens WR duo? The Cowboys extended Lamb last year on a four-year deal, then followed that up by trading for Pickens earlier this offseason. While Lamb and Pickens have insisted that neither of them is a No. 2 receiver, there's only one football on the field at a time, so only one player can be targeted at a time. One of them will inevitably get more targets. On top of the interesting dynamic between two receivers used to being the clear top-dog in a passing offense is the Cowboys' head coach switch-up. Brian Schottenheimer got the promotion after serving as Dallas' offensive coordinator for the last two seasons. Notably, however, Schottenheimer was not calling the plays on offense during his tenure. That was former head coach Mike McCarthy's job. So as Prescott makes his big return from a severe hamstring injury that ended his season early, Schottenheimer's job will be figuring out how to negotiate target share between Prescott's top two receivers. Top players (Fantasy Pros ADP) New York Giants (3-14) How much of a factor will young players (Malik Nabers, Tyrone Tracy, Cam Skattebo, Jaxson Dart) be in 2025? Rookies Malik Nabers and Tyrone Tracy Jr. were two of the lone bright spots in a 3-14 Giants season that the team and its fans would mostly like to forget. But they did shine brightly. Nabers recorded 109 catches for 1,204 yards and seven touchdowns last season, establishing himself as the team's clear WR1. Tracy took over as the starting running back in Week 5 and looked the part of a lead back with his 810 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns on 180 attempts (4.5 yards per carry). Tracy's scrimmage yards total for the season also surpassed 1,000 thanks to his success as a pass-catcher out of the backfield. But with three new quarterbacks in the building, including rookie Jaxson Dart, what will production look like from the Giants' young offensive core? How will the incumbent players adjust, and how will newcomers like Dart and running back Cam Skattebo shake things up? Those are the big questions that remain to be answered ahead of the start of the 2025 regular season. Top players (Fantasy Pros ADP)
