Panel on satellite-based toll system urges deliberation over security, privacy
New Delhi, Jul 30 (PTI) A high-level committee set up to look at ways to roll out a satellite-based highway toll collection system has recommended further deliberations over security and privacy considerations, Parliament was informed on Wednesday. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha said it is decided to proceed with corridor/stretch-based projects for Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) FASTag system (AFS)-based barrier less free flow tolling. 'The Apex Committee and High-Level Empowered Committee consisting of experts from industry and academia, in view of security and privacy considerations, and overall operational control, have recommended further deliberations for the satellite based user fee collection system," Gadkari said. Satellite-based user fee collection system is not operational anywhere on National Highways (NHs), he added. To increase the efficiency of the tolling operation and in order to ensure seamless and free-flow movement of vehicles along national highways without physical fee (toll) plazas, he said the government has decided to implement barrier-free Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) based Electronic Toll Collection (ETC). System with available technology at selected sections of NHs has an added facility along with FASTag where the user fee shall be charged from the vehicle users without having to stop, slow down or stay in a given fee plaza lane. 'Request for Proposal (RFP) to implement barrier-less tolling system has been invited/ finalized," he said. Revving Up Roadways: 54,000 KM State Roads Notified As National Highways Since 2014, Says Govt
While 55,000 km has been added in national highway length, 54,000 km state roads have been notified as NHs since 2014, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways informed Lok Sabha. The length of the National Highways (NH) network in India has expanded from 91,287 km in March, 2014 to 146,342 km at present, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways informed the Lok Sabha on Thursday. The House was also informed that since April 2014 – the starting of the financial year 2014-15, a total of 54,004 km of state roads, including state highways and greenfield stretches, have been notified as NHs. 'Development and maintenance of NHs is a continuous process. Works on notified NHs are accordingly taken up based on the traffic density, connectivity requirement, condition of the road, inter-se priority and synergy with PM Gati Shakti NM," the Ministry said. MP Chavda Vinod Lakhamsh and Rajesh Mishra had asked Union Minister Nitin Gadkari if any proposals are pending for sanctioning of new national highways. Gadkari said currently 1,240 NHs projects in about 29,400 km length costing Rs 7.8 lakh crore are under construction in the country. Gadkari also said that at present, 206 under construction NHs projects – costing Rs 91,290 crore – are delayed in Rajasthan and north eastern states including Assam. These projects are expected to be ready in a phased manner in 2025-26 and only few projects will be completed beyond 2026-27. Pace of NH building drops below 30 km/day Gadkari said that construction of NHs and the growth in NH construction in Kilometres/day during 2014-25 has been below 30 km/day in almost all the financial year, except three times – 2020-21 (37 km/day); 2023-24 (34 km/day); 2018-19 (30 km/day). The peak of NH building in India was achieved in 2020–21 with 13,327 km built – 37 km/day. However, after that it dropped to about 28–29 km/day. The year 2023–24 was another exception, witnessing a recovery to 34 km/day, with the second-highest annual construction (12,349 km). In 2014-15 only 4,410 km of national highway was constructed – 12 km/ day and in 2015-16 the number was 6,061 km (17 km/day). During the last financial year, 2024-25, a total of 10,660 km of national highway was constructed – 29 km/day. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Over 26K lives lost on NHs in 2025: Gadkari
National highways continue to claim more than 50,000 lives annually, with 147 people dying daily on average in the first half of 2025, Parliament was told on Wednesday. Over 26K lives lost on NHs in 2025: Gadkari Union road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari presented the grim statistics while responding to questions from opposition MPs, revealing that 26,770 people have died on national highways between January and June this year, according to data from the electronic detailed accident report (eDAR) portal. The figures underscore the persistent challenge of road safety despite government initiatives. In 2024, national highways recorded 52,609 fatalities, marginally down from 53,372 deaths in 2023. The numbers could rise as states and union territories continue updating the eDAR system. National highways account for 36% of all road crash fatalities in India, making them a critical focus for safety interventions. The last comprehensive 'road accidents in India' report, published for 2022, showed that of 155,781 fatal accidents that year, 55,571 (35.7%) occurred on national highways, 37,861 (24.3%) on state highways, and 62,349 (40%) on other roads. Responding to BJD MP Sasmit Patra's question on accident prevention measures, Gadkari said the government's approach focused on eliminating black spots and deploying advanced surveillance systems. Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS) have been installed on high-density corridors including the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, Trans-Haryana route, Eastern Peripheral Expressway, and Delhi Mumbai Expressway. Addressing concerns about monsoon-related landslide risks, Gadkari told BJP MP Sikander Kumar from Himachal Pradesh that the government was working with states to identify unstable hill slopes and develop evacuation protocols.
