Trade Chiefs Jostle for Time With Greer at APEC Meeting in Korea

(Bloomberg) -- Trade chiefs from some of the world's biggest economies are competing for access to US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer as they seek to advance negotiations with Washington at a gathering in South Korea. As Coastline Erodes, One California City Considers 'Retreat Now' How a Highway Became San Francisco's Newest Park Power-Hungry Data Centers Are Warming Homes in the Nordics Maryland's Credit Rating Gets Downgraded as Governor Blames Trump NYC Commuters Brace for Chaos as NJ Transit Rail Strike Looms Greer arrived at the resort island of Jeju to join his counterparts at the meeting of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation members taking place Thursday and Friday. He then spoke with Chinese Vice Commerce Minister Li Chenggang, less than a week after the US and China agreed on a temporary cut in tariffs, according to a South Korean official with knowledge of the matter. Over the course of the two days of the APEC meeting, representatives from member states will likely swap views on how to operate in a global economy that has been shaken by President Donald Trump's barrage of tariffs. APEC slashed its growth forecasts for the year on the first day of the meeting in light of the current global trade environment. Other member state trade officials are also expected to seek talks with Greer to try to blunt the impact of Trump's trade policies. Those bilateral meetings will contrast with APEC's longstanding objectives of furthering free trade through multilateral cooperation. 'For many trade ministers, securing a one-on-one meeting with USTR Greer will be their main goal,' said David Boling, Director of Japan Trade at the Eurasia Group and a former trade negotiator at the Office of the US Trade Representative. 'They want a meeting with Greer, even if it is brief, to discuss the tariffs affecting their own economy. He will be the busiest trade minister there, and his schedule will be jampacked.' The US and China are the biggest economies among the group's 21 members, which APEC says account for around half of global trade and about 60% of global gross domestic product. The group cut its growth projection for member economies to 2.6% in 2025 compared with a 3.3% forecast just two months ago, as the fallout of tariffs hits. 'As a key driver in global trade, the APEC region faces a steeper growth downgrade than the rest of the world, driven by escalating trade disputes and policy uncertainty,' APEC said in a document. The temporary tariff reprieve agreed by the US and China offers hope that the likely global hit from the levies can be scaled back. Among other members, Canada, Mexico, South Korea, Japan, Australia and Vietnam are all caught in Trump's cross hairs over trade. 'It is meaningful for the ministers to gather together for the first time since the Trump administration slapped massive tariffs around the world and discuss a way forward for the global trading system,' said Yeo Han-koo, a former South Korean trade minister who is now a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. He described this week's meeting as a building block for the APEC summit in November. South Korea hosts APEC this year with a central theme of 'Building a Sustainable Tomorrow' and aims to make progress in realizing the Putrajaya Vision 2040 for which leaders including Trump in 2020 agreed 'to work together to deliver, a free, open, fair, non-discriminatory, transparent and predictable trade and investment environment.' 'Today, the global environment surrounding APEC economies faces many challenges,' South Korean Trade Minister Cheong Inkyo said in his opening remarks for the meeting. 'As cross-border trade and interconnected supply chains continue to expand, growing uncertainties are placing a strain on the global economy and trade landscape.' Beyond APEC's loftier goals, participants in Jeju will be keen on knowing more about the US-China tariff truce, in which China's use of retaliation appears to have paid off, and how the outcome may affect other nation's negotiations with Washington. Details of the latest Greer-Li talks on Thursday were not immediately available and the US Embassy in Seoul declined a request to confirm the meeting. Securing Greer's presence at the meeting was a key goal of Seoul, according to Trade Minister Cheong. 'For other ministers and countries, too, whether Greer was coming was their biggest question. When it was confirmed Greer was coming, quite a number of countries changed their representative from vice ministers to ministers,' Cheong told reporters. From the perspective of the US, Greer's appearance may also keep in check China's efforts to build support among other nations feeling the pressure from Trump's policies. 'The US can use this opportunity to continue ongoing trade talks with China, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam and most of member countries,' said Yeo at the Peterson Institute. 'It was vindicated that China doesn't have to rush for a deal. China may use this momentum to strengthen its narratives that China is a leader in regional trade integration at the APEC.' South Korea and Japan, which rely on the US for security, have avoided any hint of retaliation. While the two US allies were among the first to start talks with the US, political uncertainty ahead of a presidential election is putting the brakes on Seoul's efforts to reach a deal. South Korea's Industry Minister Ahn Duk-geun, a key official in Seoul's trade talks with the US, is set to meet Greer on Friday while Cheong met China's Li on Thursday. In contrast, Japan is likely to miss a bilateral talk with Greer after sending only lower ranking officials to APEC, a possible indication that Tokyo prefers to take more time to get a better deal. With all the focus on individual bilateral deals, the ultimate goal of APEC may be falling by the wayside for now. 'Though some APEC trade ministers may try to shore up support for the multilateral trading system at these meetings, they will be swimming against the tide,' Eurasia Group's Boling said. --With assistance from Fran Wang and James Mayger. We're honoured to have shared the screen with Mousumi Chatterjee, say Yash & Nussrat

Aarii , directed by Jiit Chakraborty, is a poignant family drama that delves into the complex dynamics between a mother and her son. The film thoughtfully captures the emotional peaks and valleys that shape their relationship, offering a heartfelt exploration of the strength and fragility of familial bonds. Starring Yash Daasguptaa , Nussrat Jahan , and the legendary Mousumi Chatterjee , the film is extra special as it marks Mousumi's return to Bengali cinema after 12 long years. Calcutta Times caught up with Yash and Nussrat to chat about their experiences working on the film and what it was like sharing screen space with a veteran actress like Mousumi. Read on... Tell us the story of Aarii. Nussrat Jahan: Aari is an emotional rollercoaster that takes you through the highs and lows of everyday life. It's a film that feels real and familiar, capturing moments that make you laugh, cry, and pause to think. What makes Aarii so special is how easy it is to connect with—the characters, the situations, the feelings—they all feel like part of our own lives. With a perfect mix of nostalgia and modern storytelling, Aarii is a heartfelt slice-of-life movie that stays with you long after the credits roll. Yash Daasguptaa: Aarii is a story that speaks to the heart—it explores emotions, love, and the weight of duties and responsibilities. It follows the journey of an ailing mother suffering from anterograde amnesia, and her son, whose life revolves around caring for her. It's a touching journey filled with laughter and tears—a true rollercoaster of emotions. How did the title of the film come to mind? NJ: One morning, over a cup of coffee, Yash asked me, 'How do you like the name Aari for the film?' I couldn't resist the sweetness of the word. Aarii carries a lot of nostalgia. It has this soft, lyrical quality to it—almost like a whisper from the past. It feels personal, tender, and even a bit poetic. YD: We used this word innocently throughout our childhood. Whenever we had fights with friends, we used to say, tor shonge aarii . Even elders would tell us that bhab and aarii are part of life. Once the audience watches the film, they'll understand how perfectly the title fits the story. How often do you two end up arguing and then say 'aarii' to each other? YD: The person I have the deepest emotional connection with is the one I argue with the most. So yes, Nussrat and I argue pretty often. But we always mend it—those arguments turn into bhab . NJ: During the filming of this movie, we've had fallouts and differences of opinion, which I believe are common in any workplace when you're striving for the best outcome. But there's an unspoken rule between us: no matter the issue, we resolve it before going to bed. If I'm at fault, I'm the first to apologize—and Yash does the same. How is it working together as a couple? Do personal aspects get in the way? NJ: The decision to work together toward a common goal stems from a personal space. But on set, we're completely professional. Behind the scenes, we're often busy managing our respective responsibilities. Acting while also handling production is no easy task. YD: As producers, we have to ensure everything runs smoothly on set so the entire cast and crew feel comfortable and appreciated. Nussrat and I both make sure of that. Our professional chemistry is great—we always discuss things before making decisions. On screen, we play our parts with honesty, and I believe the audience enjoys our camaraderie. Did Yash pamper you on the sets? NJ: I don't think Yash was in the mindset to pamper me as a heroine on set ( laughs ). Most of the time, we were focused on ensuring others were comfortable. That was our top priority as producers. How was it working with a veteran actress like Mousumi Chatterjee? YD: We call her Mou , and she is the 'Shero' of our film. I play her son, and I must say, the affection she has for me is nothing less than what I received from my own mother. The whole team took care of her as much as we could—acting at her age is no small feat. And her acting prowess? Still as strong as ever. She'll always be a mother figure to us, and we're beyond happy and honored to have shared the screen with someone of her caliber. She's now a part of our lives forever. In an interview with Calcutta Times , Mousumi said her chemistry with Yash is better than the Yash–Nussrat camaraderie? NJ: ( Laughs ) Absolutely true. A mother's place can never be taken by anyone. The bond between Yash and Mousumi Chatterjee goes beyond cinema—it's for life. I've seen them laugh and cry together on set, and they talk for hours on the phone. Their love is beautiful to witness, and it makes me so happy. YD: I'm truly grateful to God. We met for a film… but fell in love instantly, like family. In real life, I lost my mother a few years ago, and she lost her elder daughter. So, in many ways, we filled each other's voids. Night train service between Berlin and Brussels to stop running from end of March

Several services have been cancelled on a European night train service connecting several major cities across the continent as last-minute construction work is announced – with one route discontinued altogether. Nightjet, operated by Austrian Railways (ÖBB), connects 25 destinations such as Paris, Rome and Berlin on its multi-national train services, with passengers offered the choice of sleeper cabins, couchettes and seating carriages on its journeys. Due to 'construction sites in Germany, Austria and France announced at short notice', the train operator has said that several of its services will not be running over the two next months. However, one route will not be coming back after the wave of cancellations and will be discontinued altogether. The train operator said that departures from Berlin to Brussels will be cancelled from 26 March onwards, and Brussels to Berlin from 27 March. An ÖBB spokesperson told The Independent: 'Unfortunately, we have to discontinue the Berlin - Brussels connection. The reason for this is the complex construction site situation, but also there is a lower demand on this connection.' 'Apart from the night train service, Brussels remains well connected to Berlin via Cologne during the day. The ICE 3neo has been providing more reliability and comfort for travellers to Belgium on this connection between Frankfurt and Brussels since June 2024.' 'The Nightjet connection Vienna - Brussels will in any case continue to be offered.' Rail expert Mark Smith, from the Man in Seat 61 said in a report of the Nightjet Berlin-Brussels route that 'a combination of difficult-to-bypass late-notice trackwork in Germany and (no doubt) the fact that it now runs on the same 3 days of the week as the European Sleeper mean they seem to have given up'. Specific departures between Vienna and Paris and between Berlin and Paris also have cancellations on certain days from 27 March to 26 May, ÖBB added. Alongside this, various trains running to and from Zurich, Amsterdam and Prague will not be able to run next month between 13 April and 28 April. Other connections will also have changes along its routes. The connection from Zurich to Berlin or Berlin to Zurich (NJ 408 / NJ 409 incl. IC 60408 / 60409) will be operated to/from Hamburg between 14 April and 27 April 2025, the operator said. On the Zurich to Hamburg / Hamburg to Zurich connection (NJ 470 / 471 with IC 60470 / 60471), stops at Bremen and Verden an der Aller will be cancelled between 14 April to 27 April. For both changes, the train operator has requested that travellers take the daytime service to Hanover, and Nightjet tickets will be recognised. ÖBB said they apologise for any inconvenience caused due to the last-minute cancellations and have directed passengers to the ÖBB Customer Service at +43 5 1717 for free cancellation or rebooking of Nightjet tickets. The full list of cancellations and changes due to the construction works: NJ 468 from Vienna to Paris departing on 27 March, 1 April, 6 April–8 April, 24 April–8 May, and 20 May–22 May. NJ 469 from Paris to Vienna with a departure on 28 March, 2 April, 7 April–11 April, 25 April–9 May, 21 May–26 May NJ 40424 from Berlin to Paris with a departure on 27 March–10 April and 24 April–25 May NJ 40469 from Paris to Berlin with a departure on 28 March–9 April and 25 April–23 May NJ 424 from Berlin to Brussels, departures from 26 March NJ 425 from Brussels to Berlin, departures from 27 March NJ 402 from Zurich to Amsterdam with a departure on 14 April to 27 April NJ 403 from Amsterdam to Zurich with a departure on 15 April to 28 April EN 40459 from Zurich to Praha with a departure on 14 April to 27 April EN 40458 from Praha to Zurich with a departure on 13 April to 26 April
