Kembla preview: Claire Lever's patience pays off with Yes Siree

Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. As legendary trainer Bart Cummings once said, 'Patience is the cheapest thing on racing and the least used.' Hawkesbury trainer Claire Lever is one person who follows that ideology with her horses and her latest subject is the three-year-old Yes Siree. From his early days the stable, the gelding showed Lever he was blessed with nice ability and even after he won a Hawkesbury barrier trial last November, she put him away knowing he wasn't ready to take the next step. 'He showed nice ability from the time he came into the stable but he was really slow to mature,' said Claire Lever. 'He kept growing and took a long time to come together to where you want him to be. 'He grew more than we expected and took time to mature. 'I know he trialled well last time around but we just wanted to see him develop a bit more so we tipped him out. 'It wasn't until this preparation that he got to where we could do a bit more with him.' Returning for a late autumn and winter campaign, Yes Siree rewarded Lever and his owners with a debut win at Wyong on May 1. 'He trialled well then went to the races and won his first start,' Lever said. 'It probably wasn't an overly strong form race but it was over an unsuitably short distance for him and he did a few things wrong so he's progressing. 'It nice to have a horse in the stable that will keep improving that has been looked after.' That Wyong win came on a Heavy 10 but it was no surprise he handles the conditions so well being a son of Everest winner and Randwick 1200m track record holder Yes Yes Yes from an O'Reilly mare. Yes Siree is looking to make it two from two when he steps out on the Benchmark 64 Handicap (1200m) at Kembla on another heavy track with Grant Buckley to ride. 'It's a heavy track again but the Yes Yes Yes' have won all well on heavy tracks,' she said. 'The fact he ticked that box off, you can go to the races with that little bit more confidence that the track is not going to worry him too much. 'Down the track, I think 1400m will be is best distance but stepping up to 1200 metres this weekend will be good for him.' Four-year-old gelding Casanova has been a model of consistency in his two campaigns for Lever with a win and two placings in the first and he has a win and two placings so far this time in. He is looking to improve on that when he lines up in the Benchmark 64 Handicap (1600m) with Lever husband, Chad, to ride. The gelding scored a tough win on his home track in March before a rare blip when well back behind Monkhena there a month later. A drop in grade saw him return his usually form with a third behind Exceedingly Hot at Queanbeyan on May 11. 'He is very honest, he puts himself up on speed or thereabouts and just tries really hard,' Lever said. 'His run at Hawkesbury was out of character but he pulled up okay. 'He bounced back with a better effort last start although it was at Queanbeyan in weaker grade. 'Back to provincial grade, on a nice track and down in weight, I think he will run well again. 'His form on wet tracks in good so I'm going to Kembla confident he will handle the conditions.'

Shayne O'Cass' tips, inside mail for Goulburn, Casino on Friday, May 30, 2025

Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. Form analyst Adam Sherry provides his best bets, value selection and analysis of the quaddie legs for Goulburn and Casino on Friday. The Form: Complete NSW Racing thoroughbred form, including video replays and all you need to know about every horse, jockey and trainer. Find a winner here! GOULBURN BEST BET Race 8 No. 3: ORTHIE'S BOYS Runner-up here at only visit and has recent solid provincial form. NEXT BEST Race 7 No. 3: BOMBELLEISTIC Excelled in a very strong Class 1 at Scone on Cup Day. VALUE BET Race 4 No. 6: ROUGE HOMME Lightly-raced. natural/raw talent, in good hands here at the track. QUADDIE Race 5: 1, 5, 8, 11 Race 6: 2, 3, 4 Race 7: 2, 3 Race 8: 3 JOCKEY TO FOLLOW JAY FORD has ridden 133 of his 1,408 career winners at Goulburn. Jay Ford can add to his solid record at Goulburn. Picture: Bradley Photos CASINO BEST BET Race 3 No. 9: MERAPI Could not be better placed at her second run for an astute new yard. NEXT BEST Race 2 No. 4: HOMELAND Placed four from 10. Reliable and drawn well this time. VALUE BET Race 6 No. 10: LOVE RAT Big run first-up in a much superior Benchmark 58 to what this is. INSIDE MAIL - GOULBURN RACE 5: GOULBURN POST MAIDEN HANDICAP 1500m SHE REX (1) is trained by Ciaron Maher who also trains her very close relation, Pride Of Jenni. She Rex might end up being a good investment on her $240,000 Inglis Classic Sale outlay in 2023. So far, she has placed at five of her six starts; she has been terribly costly, but in much better races than this. Zero excuses. HIDDEN MOGUL (11) doesn't know how to run a bad race. She could potentially make this favourite earn the win. Bet: She Rex to win, exacta 1 to beat 11 RACE 6: ABERNETHY GORE SOLICITORS COUNTRY BOOSTED BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP 1500m LETHAL LADY (2) was so unlucky it wasn't fair at Wagga during the carnival. Fast forward to her last start and she was third at the Sapphire Coast when coming from a long way back as usual. That's not easy to do there. Easier here though. Luke Pepper is flying himself but he's also got HELL OF A FOX (3) on a hat-trick. In fact, she should be going for four straight since she got down to Canberra. Bet: Lethal Lady to win, quinella 2, 3, Daily Double 1st leg 2, 2nd leg 3 RACE 7: HIBERNIAN HOTEL BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP 1600m BOMBELLEISTIC (3) is the fourth foal of his dam; all of her foals are housed by Team Joseph/Jones who bred the lot of them. As this for one, he has a win and two seconds from eight starts but you could argue that nothing he has done has contained as much merit as his fifth in very strong Class 1 at Scone on Cup Day. CHEBICI (2) is on a hat-trick. Easy to like with the good alley and Coriah Keatings doing the right thing by her all the time. Bet: Bombelleistic to win, box trifecta 2, 3, 5, 9 RACE 8: CAMPBELL PETROLEUM DISTRIBUTORS BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP 1200m ORTHIE'S BOYS (3) has been with Richard Collett for the last three of his five career starts. Those were; a barnstorming second here, another 'from last' fourth at Gosford then a fading on-pace fifth at Kembla. Maybe he didn't see out the 1400m but we're back to 1200m in weaker grade today. For what it is worth, I think COUGARS (1) is a pretty handy horse and sure, they've all got to carry big weights here, but he's got the biggest and 62kg is a big number. Bet: Orthie's Boy to win INSIDE MAIL - CASINO RACE 6: BACK TO THE ROYAL COUNTRY BOOSTED BENCHMARK 58 SHOWCASE HANDICAP 1200m LOVE RAT (10) is a get back and run on type, perhaps better suited at Grafton but here we are at Casino. The son of Love Conquers All has a troubling second-up record but if you can overlook that and the wide draw, he is in this with as a good a chance as any and better than most. AYE AYE SKIPPER (1) is in fabulous form, and has been for a while too, but this is as bad a draw as the horse has been dealt in all that time. Bet: Love Rat each-way RACE 7: CASINO FOOD CO-OP CASINO FLYING 1000m DIS IS HEAVEN (5) is '3213' heading into the Casino Flying. They were all good quality affairs too, but none were any harder than his May 7 assignment at Warwick Farm when and where Colt Prosser's gelding was an honourable third. Stablemate and MNC Championships Qualifier placegetter BJORN IRONSIDE (4) has raced once at 1000m; that was the day he carried 62kg at Taree when he won by two lengths. Bet: Dis Is Heaven to win, quinella 4, 5, box trifecta 1, 3, 4, 5, DD 1st Leg 5, 2nd Leg 5 RACE 8: CASINO RSM CLUB BEEF WEEK CUP 1400m SECRET PLAN (1) is a Queenslander, via Perth, Melbourne and Sydney. The Bob Peters-bred galloper has been with Tony and Maddysen Sears for the last three runs, the most recent of them was a third at Eagle Farm. On-pace type with a manageable weight now after Jett Newman's claim. COLLAY'S SPIRIT (4) could very well tally up his 10th career win, third-up. Note that Luke Rolls is one win and two placings on the horse. The best CENOTES (6) is better than a lot of these. Bet: Secret Plan to win RACE 9: WAL'S CONCRETING CLASS 3 SHOWCASE HANDICAP 1400m MONTE MAXIMUS (5) probably deserves a bit more credit for his last handful of runs than would normally be afforded to a horse with a '7295' lead in. All in all, 1400m is in the right range for the Noel Mayfield-Smith-trained son of Invader and he gets a little bit of weight off on what he has been carrying lately. Former Godolphin galloper STYLISED (1) is ready to produce now that he is out to 1400m. The more scratchings the better in view of that wide alley. Bet: Monte Maximus each-way

Leading trainer criticises rejection of Rosehill sale; calls for collaborative efforts to address long-term challenges

The rejection by Australian Turf Club members of the $5 billion Rosehill sale proposal is a 'missed opportunity' to financially future-proof Sydney and NSW racing for decades. This was the reaction of one leading trainer who contacted Racing Confidential under a cloak of anonymity after Tuesday's members vote dealt a fatal blow for plans to sell Rosehill, transform Warwick Farm and build a new racing and training centre at Penrith. 'What is the alternative funding model for the industry given wagering is in decline and the members have turned their back on $5 billion? What is Plan B?'' the trainer said. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! The trainer maintains he is 'one of many' reluctant to talk on the record or risk losing stable clients because the Rosehill sale proposal has split Sydney racing, fractured friendships, and led to deep distrust on both sides of the argument. 'There has been a lot of misinformation through this whole debate,'' he said. The trainer became increasingly agitated the longer the conversation went and it was plainly obvious he had real concerns about his future and for many industry participants. It has been regrettable that the Rosehill sale issue seemed to drift away from being a robust debate on the merits of the proposal into attacks on key industry figures. Surely the time has come to put differences aside and start working collaboratively for the betterment of the sport. The Rosehill sale proposal has highlighted some of the long-term structural issues the racing industry must confront, notably improving club revenues, addressing wagering decline, and keeping the sport relevant for younger generations. â– â– â– â– â– Star Sydney jockey Tyler Schiller was in good spirits on Thursday despite a serious back injury that will rule him out for six weeks. 'I'm going well considering, it could've been much worse,'' Schiller said. The jockey suffered a stable fracture of his T-8 vertebrae (mid-spine) after he was dislodged going onto the track before the Canterbury opener on Wednesday. Schiller, who has ridden 49 winners to be fifth on the Sydney jockey premiership, has had another hugely successful season highlighted by his Group 1 wins on the Team Hawkes-trained Briasa (TJ Smith Stakes) and Nepotism (Champagne Stakes).

Aaron Bullock has a good book of rides at Newcastle. Picture: Getty Images INSIDE MAIL – NEWCASTLE RACE 1: VARLEY GROUP 3YO&UP MAIDEN HANDICAP 900m PRATT (1) resumes from a spell for a new stable. Led all-the-way in his Beaumont trial on heavy ground on Apr 16 then under a hold when just caught late by Trounce in his May 7 heat. PERASTA (8) has been up for a while but worth thought on his third to Divine Bene on a Heavy 8 on the Beaumont two starts back. Drawn well. I'M OPINIONATED (7) placed on a Soft 7 at Dubbo last campaign. Just behind the placegetters in both runs back from a spell and at her peak now. Bet: Pratt to win RACE 2: CLICKK MIDWAY 2YO MAIDEN PLATE 900m TYRONE'S POWER (3) eyeballed the leader and went to the front on straightening before finishing third to Regulated Affair at Warwick Farm second-up. DIVO (1) is a grandson of the Hall of Famer, Makybe Diva by Capitalist on debut. Led and cruised to a near two length win in his Apr 9 Scone trial. Sat outside the leader before going to the front near the 400m to win his Apr 24 Wyong trial on a heavy track. THE ROOKIE (10) will be improved by her first-up fourth to Yes Siree on the Heavy 10 at Wyong. Bet: Tyrone's Power to win RACE 3: COASTAL ADVICE GROUP BENCHMARK 64 HANDICAP 900m HAWKER HALL (5) travelled strongly in front when third behind Leantothemoon on debut as favourite at Hawkesbury on Oct 24. Resumed with a big all-the-way win on a Heavy 8 over this track and distance on Apr 23. Has since won a Beaumont trial impressively. ONE KIND (14) closing in on a win after three handy placings. Was trapped out very wide when a neck third to Dis Is Heaven at Tuncurry and caught deep again when a neck third to Are Ee Que at Wyong last start. Races well this track and distance. Bet: Hawker Hall to win RACE 4: DARREN FARRELLY MEMORIAL (HMF CUP) CUP CLASS 1 & MAIDEN PLATE 2200m TRAPALANDA (2) battled away when fifth to Collect Your Cash at his Australian debut on the Kensington. Stepped up top Saturday grade when fifth to Asgoodassobergets at Gosford on Cup Day. At his peak now and won third-up in Ireland. TOMMY THUG (7) was a handy neck second to the in-form Shangri La Impact over 2000m at Hawkesbury last start. Place twice on the heavy including a third here three starts back. BEARINGS (8) scored her maiden win first-up at Goulburn before a fourth to Rotagilla on the Kensington. Bet: Trapalanda to win RACE 5: DAMAR MINYAK DF SUPER 3YO&UP MAIDEN PLATE 1400m LUNE D'EXCELLENCE (6) was excellent coming from well back to finish a half-length second under a good hold to Pratt in his Apr 16 trial. Went back from a wide gate and was held up early in the straight when a two-and-a-half length fourth to Impressionism over 1300m here first-up. INVISIBLE MAGIC (4) ran much better than his $71 starting price when a length-and-a-quarter third to Hopper on debut at Warwick Farm. Will take improvement from the run. Anamoe's half-sister BLUE WILLOW (3) has been okay on both runs. Bet: Lune D'Excellence to win RACE 6: AARON WALTER CENTURY 21 EDGEWORTH F&M BENCHMARK 64 HANDICAP 1250m LUNAITE (6) was given a long spell after her debut seventh on the Kensington in March last year. Resumed with a two length second to Night Sky at Wyong on Apr 17 then scored a near four-and-a-half length win from Blue Willow on a Heavy 10 here last start. NAUGHTY NURSE (8) was narrowly beaten by Love Child first-up before winning at the Gold Coast. Worked to leaded from a wide gate and raced keenly when eighth at the Sunshine Coast last start. REDUCIO (7) can bounce back from a disappointing run last start. Bet: Luinate to win RACE 7: NEWCASTLE SKIN CHECK CG&E BENCHMARK 64 HANDICAP 1250m FRENCH MARINE (6) didn't have any luck first-up when he was held up in the straight and unable to be tested when a two-and-a-half length eighth to Executive Decision over 1100m at Wyong. Has two win and three seconds from seven starts second-up and is a winner at this track and trip. Likes it wet. MURAL CROWN (1) was okay when fifth to Cassiel first-up at Canterbury then raced flat when second last behind She Conquers at Kembla. Can bounce back. POCKET EIGHTS (7) is two from two on the heavy. Bounced back with a nose win at Gosford from Ocean Diva who has won since. BELLA KATHLEEN (9) scored a good win at her NSW debut in a Class 1 here before a second to Gentileschi in the Godolphin Tiara at Muswellbrook. Placed all four runs on the heavy.
