ICE ramps up immigrant arrests in courthouses across U.S.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents — often dressed in plainclothes — are now arresting immigrants at courthouses nationwide, sometimes moments after their hearings end. Why it matters: The courthouse crackdown is part of a sweeping Trump administration effort to fast-track removals and increase the number of deportations this year — a strategy that's dramatically expanding who gets targeted and how. The big picture: The recent ramp-up follows a January policy shift that authorizes ICE to target courthouses for the first time in years — a move advocates say is quietly upending the legal process for immigrants. Under the Biden administration, ICE was not allowed to conduct enforcement operations at or near courthouses. What they're saying: "ICE is now following the law" and placing immigrants in expedited removal, "as they always should have been," a senior Homeland Security spokesperson told Axios. Immigrant activists describe it as a trap, warning that courthouses are becoming enforcement zones where due process rights are eroding. How it works: An immigration court that dismisses the case — often because the Department of Homeland Security withdraws the charges or because the applicant has no active relief from removal — opens the door for ICE to swoop in post-dismissal, no longer restrained by a pending court case. These immigrants, if they've been in the U.S. for less than two years, are then arrested on-site and fast-tracked for deportation. Failure to appear at court results in a removal order called an "in absentia" deportation order. Driving the news: Under a February executive order from President Trump, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is now defaulting to issuing Notices to Appear (NTAs) for anyone denied an immigration benefit — including asylum, green cards and work permits. The policy change increased the number of NTAs issued by the agency compared to under the Biden administration. ICE and Customs and Border Protection also issue NTAs. Someone denied a visa extension can now be swept into removal proceedings, even without a criminal record. NTAs are also being issued to immigrants who commit fraud, including giving false information to an employer. State of play: The policy shift has supercharged the deportation pipeline and contributed to a surge of courthouse arrests across the country. By the numbers: Federal immigration authorities have launched deportation proceedings against more than 22,100 immigrants since late February, according to new USCIS data out Thursday. USCIS is now issuing about 1,840 NTAs every week, including hundreds tied to asylum and Temporary Protected Status (TPS) cases, per new agency figures. Zoom in: In recent weeks, ICE officers have ramped up arrests in immigration courts in numerous cities, from Seattle and Phoenix to San Antonio and New York City. At Denver's immigration court, for example, at least eight immigrants — including two young children — have been detained by ICE in the last two weeks, according to local organizers. What they're saying: Denver activists say the arrests are fueling fear and signal a collapse of due process. "The truth here is that the jack boots of ICE are terrorizing immigrant communities that are trying to take advantage of the due process of law that they are entitled to," Denver immigration attorney Hans Meyer said at a press conference last week. Now immigrants are "questioning if the legal way is really the right way," Jennifer Piper, the American Friends Service Committee's Denver program director, added.

NTAs host Joel Dommett hoping Adolescence ‘wins big' as longlist revealed
NTAs host Joel Dommett hoping Adolescence 'wins big' as longlist revealed undefined (Image: PA Archive/PA Images ) Netflix hit Adolescence has made it on to the National Television Awards (NTAs) longlist and host Joel Dommett is hoping the drama "wins big". The four-part series, which examines so-called incel (involuntary celibate) culture, has prompted a national conversation about online safety. The programme features This Is England star Stephen Graham as Eddie Miller – the father of 13-year-old Jamie played by newcomer Owen Cooper – who sees armed police burst into his home to arrest his son. Both actors are longlisted in the drama performance category alongside Erin Doherty, who plays a child psychologist, and the programme itself features in the new drama category. Dommett, 39, told the PA news agency: "It's another one of those sort of game-changer shows, isn't it really? In a similar way to Baby Reindeer, in a similar way to Mr Bates Vs The Post Office. "One of those shows that really sort of stretches wide and everyone notices and everyone talks about it. It was one of those strange ones, really, where I was scared to watch it, I think, because, also I've got a young boy, but it felt important to watch, and I think that was what everyone felt. Article continues below "And as soon as I did (watch it), I was like, this is just not only important, but unbelievably moving and incredibly shot. "Every now and again a series comes along where it feels like it moves television forward. And it felt like it was one of those shows where you were like, 'Oh my god, this is so, like, arresting to watch and so incredibly written and so incredibly acted.' "Just felt like all of the pieces of the puzzle were perfect. So I hope it wins big, I'm sure it will. They deserve to be lauded." At the end of March, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer met the series creators, charities and young people to discuss the issues raised in the series during a meeting focused on rethinking adolescent safety. The drama took months of preparation and rehearsals so that each episode could be filmed in one continuous shot, which was praised by viewers of the show. Discussing Cooper's performance, Dommett told PA: "I mean it was just one of those performances that you're like, 'Oh my god, this person. I hope he acts for the rest of his life.' This is like his first job. "But what an amazing thing to be able to do. It's insane that performance... But yeah, I really hope he makes the short list. "I really hope he gets, again, awarded for it, because he's brilliant, but it's so mad the fact that he could be against his dad in it, Stephen Graham." Among the other shows up for multiple awards is Disney+ drama Rivals, based on Dame Jilly Cooper's novel of the same name, which is longlisted for new drama, with a performance nod for Danny Dyer and David Tennant. Gary Lineker, who recently issued an apology for a social media video he shared which led to his early exit from the BBC, is among those who feature on the TV presenter longlist. It was revealed on Monday that after this weekend's Match Of The Day, Lineker, 64, will leave his presenting role at the BBC and will no longer front the corporation's coverage of the 2026 World Cup or the FA Cup next season. He is longlisted alongside presenting duo Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly who won the prize for a historic 23rd year in a row in 2024. This year's ceremony, which will see Dommett undertake hosting duties for the fifth time, marks the NTA's 30th anniversary. Dommett said: "I'm really excited for it to be the 30th year. I think it's going to give it a really good vibe to it that I think we've never had before. "I say this every year, but we're going to try and make it bigger and better than ever, and try and put our own little spin on it and do something a little bit different." Article continues below The NTA shortlist will be revealed in August when the final round of voting begins. Winners will be announced at the ceremony on ITV1 and ITVX on September 10 2025.

Ant and Dec could lose their 23-year reign of success in massive NTA shake-up
This year's National Television Awards will look a lot different with the addition of the Reality Competition category which will blend celebrity series with civilian-based formats The stage is set for a high-stakes showdown at the National Television Awards as two of Britain's most talked-about reality shows prepare to compete in the same category. I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! will now go up against The Traitors in the newly reshuffled Reality Competition section - a major change that blends celebrity-fronted series with civilian-based formats. This shake-up moves the jungle-based staple out of its usual Entertainment category, pitting the ITV juggernaut against the BBC 's breakout psychological thriller in a battle that will surely divide the audience vote. Big-name presenters also feature prominently this year, including Alison Hammond, Holly Willoughby, Jeremy Clarkson, Maya Jama, and Gary Lineker, whose departure from the BBC could make this his final shot at victory. One unique highlight of this year's nominations will be the first-ever father-and-son face-off at the NTAs, thanks to Bradley Walsh and his son Barney, who are both up for recognition following their work on the Gladiators reboot. Meanwhile, Netflix 's gripping drama Adolescence is poised for a strong showing, with four nods. Lead actor Stephen Graham, young co-star Owen Cooper, and Erin Doherty are all nominated for individual performances, while the show itself is a frontrunner in the New Drama category. Fresh new series haven't gone unnoticed either. Disney+ adaptation Rivals by Jilly Cooper and the BBC's chaotic comedy Amandaland are both in contention. I'm A Celebrity, which last year featured Maura Higgins, has amassed a staggering 15 NTA wins to date. However, The Traitors, which debuted in 2022, is undefeated in its category winning both years it has been nominated. Elsewhere, fans of Gavin & Stacey will be hoping the show's final episode finally gets its due, following a BAFTA snub, with a chance to score big in the Comedy category. ITV also dominates nominations in the Bruce Forsyth Entertainment Award, boasting nostalgic revivals like Bullseye and You Bet!, as well as innovative new shows like 99 To Beat and the groundbreaking interview series The Assembly. Over on Prime Video, Last One Laughing also enters the race, buoyed by the comedic chemistry between Bob Mortimer and Richard Ayoade, who kept audiences in stitches. Soap operas, as always, remain a stronghold of talent. Steve McFadden earns acclaim for his haunting portrayal of Phil's breakdown in EastEnders, while Emmerdale 's Eden Taylor-Draper and Doctors alum Beth Cordingly are praised for their work on coercive control and sexual abuse storylines, respectively. Celebrity Big Brother champion Jack P. Shepherd could also score for his powerful scenes in Coronation Street as David Platt's world unravels. Returning Drama is another competitive category, marking significant transitions in long-running series. ITV's Vera secures a nomination following Brenda Blethyn's emotional departure. Doctor Who and Death in Paradise also land spots, thanks to their refreshed casts. They'll battle streaming heavyweights like Black Mirror, Heartstopper, and Slow Horses. In another thrilling match-up, Rivals leads David Tennant and Danny Dyer will face off in the Drama Performance category. The NTAs will also highlight television's power to tell deeply personal stories. The Authored Documentary section features several emotional standouts, including Freddie Flintoff's Flintoff on Disney+, which shares his road to recovery after a horrific Top Gear accident. The BBC also shines with Amy Dowden's Cancer And Me and Sir Chris Hoy's Finding Hope. Molly-Mae Hague scores a nod with her Prime Video documentary Behind It All, while Flintoff also doubles up with Field of Dreams in the Factual Entertainment category. There, he'll compete with former co-stars Paddy McGuinness and Chris Harris for Road Tripping. Jeremy Clarkson is also in the running twice with nominations for both Clarkson's Farm and The Grand Tour. Fan-favorite programs like Strictly Come Dancing, The Voice UK, and Great British Bake Off continue to dominate the Talent show category, while This Morning, BBC Breakfast, Good Morning Britain, and Loose Women are all recognised in the Daytime bracket. Celebrating 25 years on air, Bargain Hunt also receives a nod. The revised Reality Competition category throws up another twist, as audiences are now forced to choose between celebrity and civilian versions of the same shows. That includes Celebrity Big Brother versus Big Brother, Celebrity Race Across the World versus the original format, and Love Island going head-to-head with Love Island: All Stars. Even if I'm A Celebrity doesn't pull off another win, presenters Ant and Dec remain frontrunners for the TV Presenter title - a title they've famously claimed for 23 consecutive years. This year's nominations also nod to innovation and reinvention, with shows like The Repair Shop On The Road and Policing Paradise breaking new ground in storytelling.
