Move over SoBo, Lutyens...Jaipur's where they really Royalty cosplay

JI HUZOOR, NAHIN HUZOOR, THREE BAGS FULL HUZOOR Yes, parties still happen in Mumbai and Delhi. But where does Dua Lipa perform on NYE? Where do film stars go when they want privacy? Jaipur. The Pink City has nurtured a distinct party culture that isn't a spillover from Delhi or Bollywood but something its own. Jaipur has long had its high-society ecosystem, rooted in royalty, polo, and heritage venues, drawing elite celebs, both Indian and global. Grand palace hotels offer a kind of luxury that Mumbai and Delhi, for all their opulence, struggle to replicate. But Jaipur has also evolved. A newer creative class - designers, artists, hoteliers - has deepened the city's cultural capital. Edgy new labels blend modern minimalism with craft heritage. Design schools thrive alongside block printers. Art residencies and pop-ups share space with durbars. Vivienne Westwood may still launch in Mumbai. But Rahul Mishra takes Rajasthan to Paris Couture Week. Jaipur Literature Festival (JLF) began at the historic Diggi Palace. Even as it now unfolds across larger venues like Hotel Clarks Amer, its spirit remains royal boho. A writer's ball at The Leela Palace, a poetry reading under frescoed ceilings... the result is a literary scene with enough glitter to keep the global gaze returning. The polo circuit is key. Padmanabh Singh, 'maharaja' of Jaipur, is often dubbed the 'new polo prince'. Many of the city's exclusive parties orbit around the sport, bringing together aristocrats, industrialists, and an international crowd. These gatherings double as soft diplomacy and old-money networking, wrapped in candlelight and designers once came to Jaipur to 'source', Ralph Lauren recently sponsored a gala dinner to raise funds for the Princess Diya Kumari Foundation. Diljit Dosanjh has performed here. International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA) chose Jaipur for its silver jubilee least one princess of yore now serves as a luxury brand ambassador. Gayatri Devi, 'brand ambassador of Rajasthan', never exchanged her name for official endorsement. She was a real princess -- until India abolished titles in an active - even public - palace life contribute to Jaipur's contemporary relevance? There's a connection between private palace parties shared on social media, and Jaipur's climb on global 'best party cities' lists. If Gaj Singh - who made Jodhpur a post-liberalisation destination by turning one part of his palace into a heritage hotel and hosting elite New Year parties - then descendants of Jaipur's royalty have carried that spirit forward by carving a niche for a certain kind of party, ticking all the right boxes of local heritage and global polish. Socially exclusive, but not as performative as Delhi. Culturally insidious in its way. If you're not inside the palace rubbing shoulders with modern courtiers, you're at the hotel next door, close enough to feel the aura. There's a sense of authenticity to the 'heritage'. A 2019 Daily Mail story asked, 'Would you go and stay with the world's most eligible royal?' It continued, 'Maharajah of Jaipur, 21, who's just listed his palace on Airbnb, boasts a £500 mn fortune, has modelled for D&G, and counts A-listers as friends.'It's about old-money ease, and quiet cultural prestige - the kind of soft spectacle where the powerful flex their might be it via an untagged post, or a centuries-old motif reinterpreted on a linen napkin. Just ask Priyanka Chopra Jonas. Or David Jaipur's cultural success also raises an unresolved question: should we still be backing a 'princess' brand in a land where royal titles were abolished by law? India was meant to break from feudalism, not repackage it for global consumption. Yet, the appetite for soft power royalty remains, just as Britain clings to the Windsors, or binges on 'The Crown'. Now, we too have 'Royals', a fictional version on a streaming platform. The difference? Brits still have a real crown. For us, as one 'royal' insider put it, 'It's a shortcut. The dazzle isn't built on substance. That makes it an unstable model.'Still, the illusion holds - by filtered Instagram stories, curated guest lists, and a heritage that never fades. The crowns may be gone, but in Jaipur, performative royalty plays on: globally admired, digitally staged, and always just out of reach. TV presenter James Whale, 73, reveals he's 'at the end of cancer journey'

TalkTV presenter James Whale, who has been on screens for over 25 years, has revealed his cancer journey is 'at an end'. The longtime media personality, 73, shared the update on his health to viewers after being diagnosed with stage four kidney cancer five years ago, which has since spread to his spine, brain and lungs. He returned to his long-running show following a stay in intensive care after falling ill with a severe bout of the flu over Christmas. Joined by Talk co-host Ash Gould, he said: 'I'm at the end of my cancer journey. There is no treatment I can have anymore. 'I can't tell you how grateful I am to Talk to actually let me on the air and sit next to Ash, which is a real pain in the butt, but I've been doing it for 25 years!' Speaking about his plans to still work for as long as he could, he quipped: 'It might actually be helping me, you never know, so I don't let that cloud my judgment – but on the medication I am on, I'm all over the place. 'I'm hoping to go on for another few weeks, few months but as soon as I can't do the show anymore, I won't.' In December, the MBE recipient's wife offered an update when he returned home from the hospital. 'After a worrying week I am happy to report that @THEJamesWhale is out of ICU and back at home, having batted off the Grim Reaper yet again. 'This time he tried with a bout of Influenza A, but without success. Our hero is home for NYE,' she wrote in a caption. Whale was first diagnosed with cancer in 2000 when he had his kidney removed. It aggressively returned in 2020. Reflecting on his terminal condition after receiving his MBE last year, he admitted his worries that he 'might not make it to the end of the year.' At the time, he continued: 'I think you've got to be positive. I know it's getting a bit worse than it was. You just have to go with the flow really. 'You have to do that to get through it. One in two of us is going to go on this journey until they find a cure. They will find a cure. But you have to make the most of it.' 'When you're my age and I've had a good life, you say maybe you have another year left. Four years ago, we thought we had months.' Whale rose to prominence in the 1980s with The James Whale Radio Show on Radio Aire in Leeds and has also since gone on to become an Express columnist. Several high-profile people have been open about their journey with cancer in recent months, including Celebrity Big Brother's Trisha Goddard, who scheduled her treatment around her time in the house. More Trending Meanwhile, King Charles, who announced he had been diagnosed with cancer in February 2024, recently spoke about the 'daunting' experience. He wrote: 'A cancer diagnosis need never mean facing the future without hope and support'. Then added: ''Each diagnosis, each new case, will be a daunting and at times frightening experience for those individuals and their loved ones. 'But as one among those statistics myself, I can vouch for the fact that it can also be an experience that brings into sharp focus the very best of humanity.' Got a story? James Whale gives devastating health update as star says he's 'at the end' of cancer journey and there are 'no treatments left'

Radio broadcaster James Whale has given a devastating health update as the star said he's 'at the end' of cancer journey and there are 'no treatments left'. James, 73, is battling stage four kidney cancer that has spread to his spine, brain and lungs and had previously said Christmas 2023 could be his last after stopping treatment. Making the announcement with his Talk co-host Ash Gould by his side, on Monday he shared that he wouldn't be on the airways much longer and that his show may soon come to an end. He said: 'I'm at the end of my cancer journey. There is no treatment I can have anymore.' He added: 'I can't tell you how grateful I am to Talk to actually let me on the air and sit next to Ash, which is a real pain in the butt, but I've been doing it for 25 years!' James said his recent ill health had taken its toll on him due to a severe bout of flu which led to an intensive care stay. Despite his health, James managed to joke: 'It might actually be helping me, you never know, so I don't let that cloud my judgment – but on the medication I am on, I'm all over the place. 'I'm hoping to go on for another few weeks, few months but as soon as I can't do the show anymore, I won't.' Celebrity Big Brother star James spent Christmas in intensive care after being rushed to hospital amid his terminal cancer battle. He was hospitalised with the flu and was then discharged from the ICU to recover at home. His relieved wife Nadine, 59, told fans at the time: 'After a worrying week I am happy to report that @THEJamesWhale is out of ICU and back at home, having batted off the Grim Reaper yet again. 'This time he tried with a bout of Influenza A, but without success. Our hero is home for NYE.' James received an MBE for services to broadcasting and charity back in April 2024. Stepping out on the special day James wore a navy suit, crisp white shirt and patterned blue tie. By his side Nadine looked lovely in a white dress and pale blue coat and wore a matching hat. The December before after learning about his MBE milestone, James said: 'Nobody could have been more surprised than me thank you to all the guys who made it possible over the years everybody at Talk Radio and TV and everywhere. 'I've worked since the 70s and the guys that run the Charity kidney cancer UK, thank you all this is for us.' Kidney Cancer UK said: 'We are very proud that our founder and Lifetime President @TheJamesWhale was awarded an MBE in the New Years Honours List. Congratulations James.' James began his career with Metro Radio in 1974 where he pioneered the late-night radio phone-in. He rose to fame in the 1980s with his frank style, dry wit and no-nonsense approach on late-night programme The James Whale Radio Show, gaining a legion of loyal listeners. The host then spent 13 years at TalkSport before hosting the drivetime show on LBC and the breakfast show on BBC Essex. During his career he also hosted Whale On, Dial Midnight and Central Weekend Live for ITV, and Talk About for BBC One. His autobiography Almost A Celebrity: A Lifetime Of Night-Time was published in 2008 and he later launched a new version of The James Whale Radio Show. Last year, he was awarded the first ever Tric Recognition Award for his 50 years in broadcasting. Richard Wallace, head of TalkTV, said about the MBE: 'There are legends – and then there's James Whale. This award is a fitting acknowledgement of a maverick talent who has entertained TV and radio audiences with inimitable style for more than 50 years.' Dennie Morris, director of audio and news broadcasting, said: 'James is not only a giant of radio and television, but one of the loveliest men I've ever met. 'His contribution to the industry and to charity over the years has been remarkable. I can think of no one more deserving of this honour.' James was diagnosed with stage four kidney cancer in 2020. He was previously given just three months to live when he contracted kidney cancer in 2000. James has previously explained he has chosen 'quality of life' over quantity after ending his treatment and focuses on 'making memories.' He told The Sun a few years ago: 'This could be my last Christmas. Basically, I have to choose between the quality and quantity of life and I've chosen quality so that I can have a good time and make great memories with my lovely wife, Nadine. 'I've had a good life, I can't complain. But I'm just gonna make the next months as entertaining and interesting as I can, which is all any of us can do.' Elsewhere in the interview, James heartbreakingly spoke about the struggles of his terminal cancer, admitting he doesn't want to 'go on forever' feeling as unwell as he does now. The TV personality also reflected on his marriage with wife Nadine, saying he told her they should 'cool off' their romance when he was first diagnosed with cancer when they first started dating. He said: 'It was so unfair on her, so I said, 'I think we should cool it and not see each other', and she replied, 'Oh that's nice, so if I'd just been diagnosed with a terminal illness, you wouldn't come and see me any more', so we carried on.' They then got married at Tenterden Town Hall in Kent surrounded by their loved ones in October 2021, with Nadine saying they didn't have the 'luxury' of time. James lost his first wife Melinda to lung cancer in May 2018. James and Melinda were married for 48 years and had two sons James and Peter. They also have two teenage grandchildren, Oscar and Ella.

Ryan Bader announces Rizin signing for planned NYE debut vs. heavyweight grand prix winner

Ryan Bader announces Rizin signing for planned NYE debut vs. heavyweight grand prix winner Ex-Bellator two-division champion will fight grand prix winner Ryan Bader was waiting for the dust to settle around his release from the PFL to see where he might wind up fighting next. Now we know. Bader (31-8-1) and Rizin announced the former Bellator heavyweight and light heavyweight champion will fight the winner of the promotion's ongoing grand prix. Bader came into the ring Sunday at Rizin's Otoko Matsuri to tell promotion president Nobuyuki Sakakibara he's planning to be the promotion's champion after New Year's Eve. Rizin's heavyweight tournament started Sunday. Former Bellator fighter Jose Augusto, Marek Samociuk and Mikio Ueda advanced to the semifinals. A fourth quarterfinal fight is yet to take place. Regardless of who becomes Rizin's heavyweight champion after the tournament, Bader likely will be a heavy betting favorite in the fight. Bader fought for Bellator from 2017 until it was purchased and dissolved by the PFL. Bader was knocked out in 21 seconds by Renan Ferreira in a crossover fight between PFL and Bellator heavyweight champions in February 2024. He asked for his PFL release earlier this year without another fight on the horizon – and he joined scores of other former Bellator fighters who have publicly railed on the PFL for its treatment of them.
