Group stage of Women's Euro 2025 sets attendance records

The group stage of Women's Euro 2025 in Switzerland was the highest-attended in the tournament's history, breaking the previous record from 2022. UEFA confirmed that a record-breaking 461,582 people attended the 24 games, surpassing the 357,993 that watched in England three years ago. The 24 matches were held across eight different cities, with 22 of the games sold out, while the average attendance was 19,233 spectators per match. UEFA confirmed some other records broken across the two weeks include: Highest attendance at a group stage match not involving the host nation (broken twice): 29,520 Spain vs Portugal in Bern; 34,165 Germany vs Denmark in Basel. Most fans at a women's football match in Switzerland: 34,165 Germany vs Denmark in Basel. Most away fans at a Women's Euro match: More than 17,000 from Germany in the stands to see their team defeat Denmark. Most fans at a Switzerland women's national team match: Switzerland vs Norway in Basel on the opening day, 34,063. On the pitch, the 89 goals scored was also the highest ever in the tournament's group stage, surpassing the 78 scored in 2022. Spain matched England's group stage record of 14 goals, a feat the Lionesses achieved in 2022, where they went on to win the tournament. Wales and Poland made their Euro 2025 tournament debuts, with Wales' Jess Fishlock making more history in the process by becoming the oldest goalscorer in Women's Euro finals history at 38 years and 176 days. UEFA's women's football director Nadine Kessler said: 'If it was not clear before, it is undeniable now – women's football is unstoppable and here to stay. 'Before a ball was even kicked, over 600,000 tickets were sold – a record-breaking milestone that speaks volumes about the growing passion for the women's game. 'Nearly every match has been a sell-out, with electric atmospheres and fans turning out in unprecedented numbers. Millions more are following the action around the world through social media and live broadcasts. 'This is more than a tournament; it's a movement, and the response from across Europe and beyond proves that women's football is not only here to stay – it is setting the new standard.'

Family left 'stranded' after dream holiday ruined by Loveholidays error

Nadine Kyle, 35, spent £3,000 on a five-day trip to the Big Apple with her husband and two children, but when they arrived at their hotel they claim they were told their booking had been cancelled A Scottish family's dream trip to New York turned into a nightmare when Loveholidays allegedly "cancelled" their hotel, leaving them abandoned on the city streets. Nadine Kyle, 35, splashed out £3,000 for an extraordinary five-day jaunt to the Big Apple with her husband and two children to mark their son's 16th birthday. However, upon arrival, after their initial flight from Glasgow Airport to New York was cancelled, they discovered their hotel booking had also been "cancelled". ‌ Nadine recounts how she and her family were left "stranded" in the heart of New York, frantically searching for alternative accommodation. ‌ She said: "We were pacing the streets at midnight with our children and all of our luggage, we were completely stranded. We were constantly trying to get in touch with Loveholidays but we got no assistance. We basically just had to go find any hotel that had space for us." The Kyles eventually secured another hotel, which set them back an extra £1,269.36, reports Daily Record. ‌ Nadine, hailing from Alloa, expressed: "We didn't really have any other choice, everywhere was chokablocked so we had to just take whatever place could fit us in. We had to dig right into our spending money for new accommodation. "After that, I spent every day for the rest of our holiday trying to chase Loveholidays to try and get the money back. Because of the time difference, I was getting up at 4am trying to sort everything out." Loveholidays has refunded the family £1,269.36 for their accommodation and has since proposed a £269 compensation to Nadine, which the mum has branded as a "slap on the face". ‌ She commented: "Loveholidays eventually refunded us for our new hotel, as they should. They also offered us a small compensation fee, which I consider to be an utter slap on the face considering the amount of stress we were put through. "It completely ruined what was meant to be the trip of a lifetime. The kids could pick up on our stresses. New York was meant to be such a special holiday for us but we'll never be able to repeat it - it was a 16th birthday celebration that I'll never be able to redo." A representative for Loveholidays stated: "We're sorry that Mrs Kyle's experience fell below our standards. We're investigating the booking error with the hotel provider to ensure it does not happen again, and have been in touch with Mrs Kyle to apologise and reimburse her in full for the alternative accommodation arrangements she made. We have also offered a further £269 in recognition of the inconvenience caused."

Nadine Coyle misses out on £55k as she's stumped by final Celebrity Catchphrase

Girls Aloud's Nadine Coyle competed against EastEnders star Jake Wood and presenter Rick Edwards on the new series of Celebrity Catchphrase, hosted by Stephen Mulhern Celebrity Catchphrase finalist Nadine Coyle walked away with £30,000 for charity on the latest series of the ITV show. The Girls Aloud member had been just one correct answer away from a jackpot of more than £50,000, though. Nadine, 40, competed on the game show, which is hosted by Stephen Mulhern, 48, in an episode that aired earlier in the new series. She made it through to the final round after banking more money than TV presenter Rick Edwards and EastEnders actor Jake Wood in the previous rounds. ‌ She took part in raising money for the Sarah Harding Breast Cancer Appeal, which is part of the Christie Charity. It's named in memory of her late bandmate Sarah Harding, who died, aged 39, in 2021, just a year after announcing that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. ‌ After banking £5,000 earlier in the episode, which debuted in April, Nadine managed to add £30,000 to her winnings for the charity in the final round. She however ran out of time whilst trying to name the final catchphrase, which would have taken her prize fund up to £55,000 had she got it right. The catchphrase began by showing a pair of legs, which had a road covered in cars, travelling down a running track in an arena. Mr Chips was then shown running past and reaching the finish line first, indicating that he had won instead. ‌ Nadine had 15 seconds left when the catchphrase first played, after four correct answers and one pass earlier in the round. She made a series of guesses as she tried to secure the maximum £50,000 for getting to the top of the pyramind. As the final video played, Nadine guessed: "Runway ... um ... pass ... running past the runway ... running free ... winning the runway." After a close-up of the cars was shown, she said during the last few seconds of the round: "Bumper to bumper." ‌ After the countdown ended, Stephen confirmed that she had won £25,000 in that round alone. He told her: "I am more over the moon than you could ever imagine. That was incredible." The host went on to reveal the correct answer. He shared: "It wasn't a runway. He's beating the traffic." Nadine responded by saying: "Oh, beating the traffic." Stephen however encouraged her to focus on the fact that she had won a significant prize fund for her charity. ‌ Stephen said: "That moment has now gone. Let's think of happy thoughts, because, Nadine, you're talking away the £5,000 that you banked earlier on, now that £25,000 - which takes your total prize money, an incredible amount, to £30,000." It was also announced that because she had correctly named the star catchphrase, placed in the middle of the pyramid, that she had doubled the winnings of her former rivals. It meant that Jake and Rick won £3,400 and £9,400 respectively for their charities.
