Nagercoil Corporation begins construction of ₹12.05 crore market complex and Mudalvar Padaippagam projects
The Nagercoil Municipal Corporation has commenced the construction of a new market complex in Vadasery and 'Mudalvar Padaippagam' in Krishnancoil on a total outlay of ₹12.05 crore, with a target of completing both projects by February 2026. The new market complex is being constructed at Vadasery, adjacent to the existing vegetable market. It is coming up on a site of 47,000 sq ft, with a total built-up area of 25,000 sq ft. The complex is planned with ground floor and two additional floors at a cost of ₹8.95 crore under the CGF and maintenance fund 2025-2026. A total of 100 shops have been proposed for the ground floor, while the first floor will feature a parking facility with a capacity of 155 two-wheelers and 30 four wheelers. Meanwhile, 'Mudalvar Padaippagam' in Krishnancoil is being constructed on an outlay of ₹3.10 crore. The facility will have features including a reading hall, learning centre, cafeteria and other amenities. Mayor R. Mahesh told The Hindu that the construction of the new market complex aimed to provide permanent locations for vendors of the existing market. 'After relocating the vendors from the existing market, the space will be developed as a new bus terminal with a commercial complex, and a Detailed Project Report of ₹55 crore has been submitted for the project,' he said. The Mayor further added that vendors who were paying proper rent would be prioritised for the new complex and in case of space shortage they would be relocated to other suitable areas in the corporation limits.

Monitoring officer reviews key civic projects in Agasteeswaram taluk
Kanniyakumari District Monitoring Officer Hanish Chabbra inspected the ongoing development works at Agasteeswaram taluk on Thursday. He conducted the inspection in the presence of Kanniyakumari Collector R. Alagumeena, Nagercoil Corporation Commissioner Nishant Krishna and other officials from the district administration. The Monitoring Officer reviewed various sites, including Urban Primary Health centres (UPHCs), corporation's dump yard, coastal hamlets and other development works of the Nagercoil Municipal Corporation. During his visit to the UPHC in Krishnancoil area, he inquired about the availability of doctors and essential medicines at the centre. The department officials were asked about tests for non communicable disease, including high blood pressure and diabetes, under the scheme 'Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam'. He also visited Valampuraivilai dump yard, located in the heart of a residential area, an issue of critical concern for the city. Everyday tonnes of wastes from households, hotels and markets under the Corporation limits are being dumped at the site. He directed the Corporation officials to give precedence to public health with bio mining and other waste processing activities at the yard, particularly due to close proximity of residential areas, hospitals and markets. He also instructed the Corporation officials to expedite installation of suction systems at the Underground Drainage System facilities at the Pattasalianvilai. He also inspected the construction of 500 metre sea wall along the coastal road of Pottal-Puthanthurai-Pallamthurai at a cost of ₹2.81 crore and the construction of an overhead tank at Thengamputhoor being developed under the AMRUT scheme at a cost of ₹64.68 crore. The tank with a capacity of around 3 lakh litres will benefit 11,049 households in the area that were added recently to the Nagercoil Municipal Corporation limits.

VMC team reach Nagercoil, learn about innovative sanitation, summer relief measures
Corporators and staff from the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC), are on a two-week study tour to various cities in Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. On Monday, the team visited the Nagercoil Municipal Corporation in Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu. Commissioner Nishant Krishna welcomed the VMC members, while Mayor Thiru. Mahesh shared insights into the the administration of the corporation, which comprises of 54 divisions grouped into four zones. Additionally, he discussed council management systems and officials' work methodologies. The Mayor explained that sanitation management is handled through six Material Recovery Facility (MRF) plants. Here waste is segregated, and outsourced to specialised agencies. He said: 'The performance of these agencies is being monitored through a Key Performance Index.' To protect against the heat during summer, the government distributes kits to the people, which include ORS sachets, caps, cooling glasses, and other items. During field-level inspection, the VMC team visited the Knowledge Centre in the city, which offers a free library facility for students. TDP corporator Vummadi Venkateswara Rao appreciated the development initiatives undertaken by the Nagercoil Municipal Corporation and extended an invitation to them to study the development activities undertaken in the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation.
