Police Case Filed Against BJP MP, 2 Others After Driver Dies By Suicide In Karnataka

Bengaluru: A police case has been filed against BJP MP K Sudhakar and two others after a 30-year-old man, who worked as a driver, named them in a note before he died by suicide in Karnataka's Chikkaballapur. The driver, M Babu, died by suicide on Thursday morning, following which his wife, Shilpa, filed a police complaint based on the note he left behind. The first information report (FIR) charged Mr Sudhakar and two others, Nagesh and Manjunath, with financial fraud, abetment to suicide and atrocity under the BNS and the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. In the note, Babu alleged Mr Sudhakar and Nagesh cheated him of Rs 25 lakh by promising him a job. He also accused a zilla parisha accounts assistant of pushing him to die by suicide. The police said Babu had been working as a contract driver for the chief accounts officer in the zilla panchayat for over six years. "A suicide was reported at Chikkaballapura DC office premises. We received information at around 8.30 am that someone had died by hanging from a tree," Superintendent of Police Kushal Chouksey told news agency PTI. Babu alleged Nagesh and the accounts assistant "cheated him of several lakhs of rupees", claiming they could help him secure a government job "using the MP's influence". "These are serious allegations. A thorough investigation will determine whether the MP was directly involved or if his name was misused. We are examining all angles," the officer said. In the FIR, Mr Sudhakar has been named as accused 1, Nagesh as accused 2 and Manjunatha as accused 3. Earlier in the day, Mr Sudhakar told reporters in Delhi that he was "deeply pained" by the death but denied any connection to the tragedy. "I heard about the suicide at the DC office in Chikkaballapura. It has deeply saddened me. I offer my condolences to the family. I have never seen or met this person, Babu, in my public life," Mr Sudhakar said. The MP, a former minister and three-time MLA, said he helped many young people secure employment and did not understand why his name was mentioned in the note. "I have no information about the other two individuals named in the note. I've heard that Nagesh and Manjunath allegedly promised Babu a job and took Rs 10-15 lakh from him. I don't know them personally," the BJP MP said.

Horse race betting racket busted in Hyderabad; four held, Rs 8.34 crore transactions under probe

HYDERABAD: The Rachakonda police have arrested four persons for operating an illegal horse race betting racket and seized Rs 2 lakh in cash. They also froze Rs 2.42 lakh in their bank accounts. The accused — identified as Thokala Nagesh, Borra Venkaiah Chowdhary, Challa Ramesh Babu, and D Sunil — were actively involved in organising the betting operation. The key accused, Nagesh, hails from Old Guntur in Andhra Pradesh. A graduate from Mahaveer College, Nagarjuna University, he previously worked at Hewlett-Packard (HP) in Chennai. During his stay there, he developed an addiction to betting on horse races. In 2020, due to a recession and a personal health crisis, Nagesh moved to Hyderabad, where he met M Rajesh Kumar and Venkat Chowdary from Vijayawada. With their assistance, he ventured into illegal horse race betting. After splitting from his associates, Nagesh began independently organising betting operations from rented accommodations across Hyderabad. In 2024, he shifted to Tirumala Enclave, Dammaiguda, and established a betting network under the guise of 'Shinewell Enterprises' — a WhatsApp group with 105 members, including 20 from Hyderabad and Secunderabad. The accused lured victims by promising high returns on investments, trapping them in the illegal gambling ring. Investigations found Rs 8.34 crore in suspicious transactions in bank accounts linked to them. The Rachakonda police have urged the public to avoid betting, emphasising its potential to destroy lives and lead to financial ruin. They also requested citizens to report illegal activities in their neighbourhoods, stressing the importance of community cooperation in maintaining a crime-free society.

No record of 2023 letter on forged voter entries: Chief electoral officer to ex-minister

Bengaluru: The Karnataka chief electoral officer (CEO) has said there are no records of any letter or complaint filed by former minister and Congress functionary H Nagesh on alleged forged entries in the 2023 electoral rolls of Mahadevapura assembly constituency in Bengaluru. This comes days ahead of Lok Sabha opposition leader and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi's scheduled visit to Bengaluru to address alleged vote theft involving the same Mahadevpura segment during the 2024 parliamentary elections. In a communication Friday, the CEO's office responded to Nagesh's July 31 request, clarifying no such letter had been received from him during April 2023 — the time period during which he claims to have submitted the complaint. In his July 31 letter, Nagesh claimed the documents submitted in April 2023 listed fake or forged entries in the voter list of Mahadevapura. "This issue is of grave concern as it affects the transparency and fairness of the electoral process," he wrote. However, the CEO's office has clarified: "This office does not have records of any such letter received from you during April 2023 on the issue of electoral rolls with a list containing details of alleged forged entries… which you have suddenly raised now." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 15 Most Beautiful Female Athletes in the World Click Here Undo It also noted that the contesting candidate had been provided the statutory electoral rolls during the elections as per norms. "Since then, you have not filed any election petition… nor any appeal… against entries in the electoral rolls published in 2023," the CEO said, citing provisions of the Representation of the People Act. "No Record": Poll Body Denies Congress Leader's Claim Of Forged Voter List

Bengaluru: In a development that adds fresh fuel to the ongoing controversy around alleged voter roll manipulation, the Karnataka State Election Commission has officially responded to a letter from H Nagesh -- the Congress candidate from Mahadevapura, who lost in the assembly elections from the same constituency in 2023. In response to his letter, the Commission has said it has no record of any submission made by him in April 2023 regarding forged entries in the constituency's voter list. In his letter dated July 31, Mr Nagesh had requested a copy of a document he claims to have submitted last year, listing alleged bogus voters in the 174-Mahadevapura Assembly Constituency. He said his team had misplaced the original documents listing forged entries in the voters list. The Election Commission, however has responded saying it has no such document on record and noted that Mr Nagesh had also not filed any petition or appeal challenging the 2023 voter list under relevant provisions of the Representation of the People Acts of 1950 and 1951. "This office does not have records of any such letter received from you during April 2023 on the issue of electoral rolls," read the letter from the Election Commission. The reply, issued by Joint Chief Electoral Officer Yogeshwar S, also emphasized that statutory electoral rolls are publicly available online and are also handed to all contesting candidates, including Mr Nagesh, at the time. Interestingly Rahul Gandhi has been raising the same issue and has been accusing the Election Commission of failing to act on credible evidence of electoral fraud. Rahul Gandhi will be in Bengaluru on August 5, where he will lead a major protest at Freedom Park against the Election Commission and the BJP.
