6 throwback photos which show Palm Jumeirah's incredible transformation

It's hard to imagine Dubai without the remarkable Palm Jumeirah. The palm tree shaped man-made archipelago is an iconic symbol of Dubai built in the Arabian Gulf. As any visitor to the impressive The View at The Palm will know, the original plans for the design of the archipelago was for it to look like a sun instead of a palm tree. If you like this: 20 pictures that show how much Dubai has changed from the 1950s to today But eventually the stylised tree design was chosen. The island has the shape of a palm with a trunk, a crown with 16 fronds (the leaves) and a surrounding crescent that acts as a breakwater. The project then launched in 2001 to capitalise on the rapidly growing tourism industry in Dubai by growing the coastline for tourists and to not disrupt the existing ports in the emirate. And actual construction got under way in 2003 by Nakheel, which was a newly-launched property developer at the time, and took just four years to be completed. A total of 9 million tonnes of rocky material, obtained from 16 Dubai quarries, and 110 million cubic metres of sand was used to create the new land. The final palm design means that it is home to more than 40km of shoreline and, in turn, a whole host of the city's most famous hotels, restaurants and entertainment venues. By 2006, people had begun to move into some of the luxury residences on Palm Jumeirah. It is home to several of the city's most well-known hotels including both Atlantis, The Palm and Atlantis, The Royal as well as one of Dubai's best shopping destinations – Nakheel Mall. It's home to approximately 80,000 people these days. It's instantly recognisable whenever you're looking on Google Maps for your next place to go. One of the best ways to get around is by using the Palm Monorail which connects several key landmarks on the archipelago including Al Ittihad Park and Atlantis Aquaventure Waterpark. Palm Jebel Ali was launched in 2002, a year after Palm Jumeirah was announced, but construction work stalled in 2008. But after 15 years, work is back underway on the second of Nakheel's Palm Islands projects. The island will span 13.4 kilometres of land with 10.5 million square metres of development, offering a total of 110 kilometres of coastline and 91 kilometres of beachfront, which will eventually be home to 35,000 families. While work is back underway on the island, we're still a while away from seeing it filled up with luxury hotels, high-end restaurants and things to do. Nakheel hosts a limited-edition, Palm Jebel Ali-inspired brunch at Summersalt Beach Club

Dubai-based developer Nakheel dipped its toes into the culinary world with a limited edition brunch called 'A Taste of Inspiration'. An invite-only, limited-edition brunch inspired by Palm Jebel Ali took place at Summersalt Beach Club last weekend (date TBC). It brought together some of the city's top real estate brokers, customers and influencers over a picture-perfect dining experience. The event brought the developer's vision for the future to life through an immersive culinary experience that clearly reflected their passion for shaping the neighbourhood's culture and community. The curated menu by Summersalt's head chef, Hernan Ruiz, was designed to reflect the essence and spirit of Palm Jebel Ali. Each dish was meticulously crafted with exquisite flavours, unique textures and a presentation inspired by landscapes and natural elements, turning the story of the islands into a sensory journey. Techniques like espumas, foams and slow-cooking were used to bring the environment to life on the plate. Take the black cod, for example, it was layered to represent land, sea and growth. Or the lobster ceviche, a refreshing nod to the coastal breeze. Even the grilled palm heart was symbolic, representing the very core of the island landscape. Not to mention, Summersalt Beach Club, with its stunning setting, made for the perfect backdrop where conversations around culture and creativity flowed just as easily as the drinks. While this was only a one-off edition (for now), it definitely made its mark – leaving guests with a lasting impression that lingered well beyond dessert. Discover more:

Nakheel captains strong York team for in-form Burrows

The Listed victory of Alyanaabi at Haydock on Saturday pushed up Burrows' strike-rate for the past fortnight to an incredible 50 per cent. Coupled with impressive performances for Falakeyah, Gethin and the York-bound Glittering Surf, things could not be going better for Sir Michael Stoute's former assistant. 'I've never started like this. I think we're nine from 20 – that's crazy stats and I know it won't continue like that,' he said. 'Going into this season, I felt we had a decent bunch of horses. I'm thrilled with how they have run – credit to my team, everybody is working hard. 'This week, I'm looking forward to getting out Nakheel. I've got a one-time runner and winner last year – a Wootton Bassett filly (Sea Poetry) – running at Kempton on Thursday. I've got my first two-year-old runners this week, which is unheard of for me at this time of year! So that is exciting. It is going well and long may it continue.' Nakheel also had the option of the Yorkshire Cup but Burrows has plumped for the 10-furlong Group Two instead. 'She looks a bit sharper this year – we'll give her a shot in the Middleton,' he said. 'We may have to take the boys on at some stage, but I just didn't feel I wanted to do that first-time up over near enough a mile and six in the Cup.' Glittering Surf is two from two and is set for the Sky Bet Fillies' Stakes, better known as the Michael Seely. 'She's done nothing wrong. She didn't learn a lot first time – she went out in front and made all,' said Burrows. 'I was keen for her to learn a bit last time and she certainly did. She does enough at home that you know she's pretty decent, but I was pleasantly surprised. The speed she showed between three and a half to one and a half surprised me a bit, to be honest. 'She's in good form. Hopefully it will be nice, safe, fast ground – York does a very good job – because she is a big girl, she's got a bit of knee action.'
