Brits Raducanu & Norrie cause upsets in Washington
Britain's Emma Raducanu and Cameron Norrie both secured impressive victories at the Washington Open on Tuesday. Raducanu upset Ukraine's world number 27 and seventh seed Marta Kostyuk 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 in the first round. She faces Naomi Osaka next after the four-time Grand Slam winner overcame Yulia Putintseva 6-2 the men's singles, Norrie had to dig deep to beat second seed and world number seven Lorenzo Musetti 3-6 6-2 6-3 - his first success over a top-10 player in two and a half years - in the second round. The 29-year-old will play American 14th seed Brandon Nakashima in the last 16. Raducanu, the British number three, took the opening set after a gruelling 71 minutes, despite sacrificing a 4-0 lead in the tie-break. She then held a 3-0 advantage in the second set but Kostyuk, who had lost five singles matches in a row since May, rallied to break and draw level at 4-4. Having forced Kostyuk to serve to stay in the match, the Ukrainian double faulted to hand Raducanu two match points, which the Briton took on her second chance. The 2021 US Open champion said it was an "extremely good win". "I'm happy with the way I fought through the first set and in the second, stayed tough when I needed to," she added. Norrie, meanwhile, managed only three winners in the first set, two of them on aces, but dominated the second to force a saving five break points in the fifth game of the final set, he broke Musetti, who had a first-round bye, in the sixth to take a 4-2 Italian saved two match points in the final game - one on a Norrie double fault - but then sent a backhand beyond the baseline, handing the Briton victory after two hours and seven minutes. Admitting he was playing "like a kid again", Norrie said: "I just kind of let go of the expectations and I'm playing tennis more to enjoy it now."You've got to enjoy it otherwise you can get burned out on this long schedule."

Raducanu defeats kostyuk, and norrie eliminates musetti at the dc open
Emma Raducanu handed No. 7 seed Marta Kostyuk her sixth consecutive loss Tuesday, defeating her 7-6 (4) 6-4 at the DC Open to prolong a slide that now has lasted more than two months. This was the fifth tournament in a row where Kostyuk exited in the first round; she also lost in the fourth round at Rome, starting the current rut. She hasn't won a match since May 11 in Rome. The 46th-ranked Raducanu, who won the 2021 US Open, will face four-time major champion Naomi Osaka or Yulia Putintseva next. In men's action at the hard-court tournament, Cam Norrie eliminated No. 2 seed Lorenzo Musetti 3-6 6-2 6-3, keeping the Italian without a win since he got injured last month at the French Open and needed to quit playing in the semifinals. Musetti lost in the first round at Wimbledon a year after reaching the semifinals there. Holger Rune, who was seeded third in Washington, withdrew before his match Tuesday because of a back injury. Venus Williams was scheduled to play her first singles match in more than a year Tuesday night against Peyton Stearns. The 45-year-old Williams won in doubles at the DC Open on Monday.

Britain's Norrie ousts Musetti to advance at DC Open
Norrie, seeking his sixth ATP title, captured his first victory over a top-10 player in 2 1/2 years by eliminating the second seed at the first hardcourt tuneup for the US Open. "I made it very difficult for him," Norrie said. "My backhand was coming through the court low. My forehand was jumping. I'm just enjoying my tennis a lot more these days." Norrie, whose most recent title was in February 2023 at Rio, snapped a 14-match losing streak against top-10 foes with a fightback after taking a time violation to reset in the fifth game of the last set. "I was sweating so much I literally had to, my sweatband was moving on my arm and my shirt was bothering me," Norrie said. "I said whatever, I'm just going to take the time violation and reset... I think I played maybe the three best points of the match after that. "Held that game and I think that was the difference. It was a great move looking back." Norrie said he was playing "like a kid again." "I just kind of let go of the expectations and I'm playing tennis more to enjoy now," he said. "You've got to enjoy it otherwise you can get burned out on this long schedule." Also hoping to turn back the clock was seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams, who will make her return to singles after a 16-month hiatus later. The 45-year-old American will face compatriot Peyton Stearns while Japan's Naomi Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, meets Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan in another later match. Musetti, who had a first-round bye, reached three semi-finals and a final on clay earlier this year, falling to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz in a French Open semi-final. But he dropped his opener at Wimbledon and suffered his third loss in a row at Washington. Norrie managed only three winners in the first set, two of them on aces, but dominated the second set to force a third. Norrie saved five break points to hold in the fifth game of the final set then broke Musetti on his fourth chance in the sixth game, grabbing a 4-2 lead on an errant backhand by the Italian. Musetti fought off two match points in the final game, one on a Norrie double fault, but fell to the 29-year-old left-hander by sending a backhand beyond the baseline after two hours and seven minutes. Chinese qualifier Wu Yibing beat France's Gael Monfils 6-3, 6-1 for his first tour-level triumph since last year at Shanghai after the Frenchman ran into a clock at the rear corner of the court in the first set, hitting it with his right ankle. "I saw him falling down there," Wu said. I don't know what happened but after I asked him. He said his foot actually maybe stuck under the clock. © 2025 AFP

‘Knee cooked': Kyrgios blow before major return
Nick Kyrgios took a big step towards a potential US Open return after getting through his first ATP match since March with a doubles defeat at the DC Open, but a singles return remains some time off after a knee 'niggle'. The former Wimbledon finalist has entered the reimagined doubles at next month's US Open where he'll team up with Naomi Osaka should his progression continue uninterrupted by any more injuries. It was only the sixth match of the year for Kyrgios, with the rabid basketball fan playing in front of NBA star Kevin Durant, having endured a horror run of injuries that included significant wrist surgery in 2023. Kyrgios, 30, tried to play doubles at the Australian Open in January but was forced to retire in his opening match and has been sporadic in his playing ever since. But he's part of the crew of stars set to take part in the US Open doubles, with his protected ranking of 21 enough to get him on the official entry list for the final grand slam tournament of the year in New York. There won't, however, be any singles in his immediate future as he continues to battle his body. 'I wanted to play singles, but six weeks ago I had a bit of a niggle with my knee,' he said. 'So it's just going to take a bit more time.' Kyrgios teamed up with Frenchman Gael Monfils at the DC Open but went down in two sets to third seeds Edouard Roger-Vasselin and Hugo Nys after which he gave an update on his knee. 'Knee cooked but fans still f**ked with us,' he posted on Instagram. Fellow Aussie Alex de Minaur has entered the singles at the DC Open looking to put his Wimbledon disappointment behind him, start his US Open preparations and rebuild his own ranking having fallen to 13. 'Going into the tail end of the year, I'm excited for the opportunity and hoping I can play good tennis and take care of my chances,' he told 'I've got the experience now. I've got the knowledge, the physicality side of things. Everything is just there for me to go out and perform. 'I can really have a swing these next three or four years and really show that I'm at my peak and break through some barriers. 'I'm ready to go deep into tournaments. It's just up to myself to put those results right.'
